Modeling atmospheric dispersion of ammonia over water and implications for in-water fate and trajectory.

Ammonia is increasingly being considered as an alternative to fuel oils for powering vessels and as a carrier for hydrogen. A deeper understanding of the environmental and human health risks of unplanned ammonia releases will further inform this promising contribution to efforts to decarbonize shipping. Integral plume models, including Phast, have been previously applied to evaluate ammonia dispersion in air. However, most studies modeled terrestrial releases. In this study, Phast was used to model volatilization, transport, and atmospheric exposure of ammonia hypothetically released from a bu

Intelligent monitoring to predict atrial fibrillation (NOTE-AF): clinical study 1 for the 'Health virtual twins for the personalised management of stroke related to atrial fibrillation (TARGET)' project - a protocol for a prospective cohort analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia worldwide affecting an estimated 5% of people over the age of 65 and is a leading cause of stroke and heart failure. Identification of patients at risk allows preventative measures and treatment before these complications occur. Conventional risk prediction models are static, do not have flexibility to incorporate dynamic risk factors and possess only modest predictive value. Artificial intelligence and machine learning-powered health virtual twin technology offer transformative methods for risk prediction and guiding clinica

Firefighter motion capture data set and biomechanical analysis of task-specific gear effects and loading asymmetries.

Firefighting tasks are strenuous and injury-prone. This study developed a biomechanical dataset from 20 professional firefighters performing equipment carry, hose drag, body drag and stair climb, with and without gear, using motion capture and musculoskeletal simulations. Biomechanical loading and activity asymmetry were analysed. Gear effects were found to be task-dependent: trunk muscle activity increased across activities, hip joint reaction forces consistently rose and ankle torque increased only during body drag. In stair climb, ankle torque decreased with gear, while knee and hip torques

Temporal changes in the water quality and ecology of an alluvial aquifer through an agricultural crop cycle.

Irrigation is essential to intensive agriculture worldwide, particularly in semi-arid climates where rainfall is unreliable. The use of surface and groundwater for crop irrigation can alter aquifer dynamics by lowering water tables and degrading water quality through the leaching of agrochemicals, nutrients, and organic carbon. These changes pose significant risks to the integrity of groundwater ecosystems. To assess these impacts, we conducted a spatial and temporal study of groundwater chemistry and biota (using environmental DNA (eDNA)) in a shallow alluvial aquifer adjacent to an irrigated

Subterranean environments contribute to three-quarters of classified ecosystem services.

Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well-being. Subterranean ecosystems are integral to major biogeochemical cycles, sustain diverse surface habitats, and serve as the primary source of irrigation and drinking water. They also offer non-material benefits, including scientific discovery, education, and cultural practices. Yet, these contrib

A light-weight Graph Neural Network for the prediction of 31P Nuclear Magnetic Resonance signals.

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are powerful tools for predicting chemical shifts in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In this paper, we improve the state-of-the-art mean absolute error (MAE) on the Ilm-NMR-P31 dataset for the prediction of 31P shifts from 11.4 ppm to 8.88 ppm by proposing a lightweight GNN which is based on the Metalayer-Framework. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of our model depending on the size of the training dataset and compare our model with different state-of-the-art models. Finally, we demonstrate how the GNN's predictions can be interpreted and visu

Use of function diagrams in physiology education: Nessie the Nephron and Navigating the Lochs.

Function diagrams focus on physiological concepts rather than associated structures and can serve as elaboration tools and mnemonic aids. A function diagram prototype of the gastrointestinal system was recently described (Wilson TE, Barrett KE. Adv Physiol Educ 45: 264-268, 2021). In this article, a functional diagram of the glomerulus, nephron, urinary system, and bladder is proposed. Colloquially named "Nessie the Nephron" to loosely capture the looping structure and elusive understanding of renal blood flow, glomerular filtration, and epithelial transport for the student, not to mention the

VEZF1 inhibits ovarian cancer cell ferroptosis and acts as an oncogene via the miR-545-3p/PLAG1 axis.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OC) is a fatal carcinoma for women. This study attempts to explore the role of vascular endothelial zinc finger 1 (VEZF1) in OC cell ferroptosis, thereby finding a new target for OC treatment. METHODS: Expressions of VEZF1, miR-545-3p and PLAG1 in HOSE cell line and OC cell lines were determined by RT-qPCR and western blot analysis. After VEZF1 was silenced in cells, cell proliferation was examined, contents of ROS, MDA, Fe2+, GSH were detected, and expressions of ACSL4 and GPX4 were tested. Afterwards, the binding relation between VEZF1 and miR-545-3p and between m

Gut-derived metabolic reprogramming drives immune aging and tissue degeneration.

Aging is characterized by changes in gut microbiome, metabolic imbalance and chronic inflammation, yet how these processes integrate to drive tissue degeneration remains poorly defined. Using age-related macular degeneration (AMD) as a model of tissue aging, we identify a diet-induced metabolic-immune axis that promotes systemic and retinal degeneration. In mice, a high-fat, cholesterol-enriched (HFC) diet induced perturbations in the gut structural integrity and microbiome repertoire, as well as systemic metabolic aging signatures, prominently marked by reduced circulating histidine. Plasma h

Evaluation of a novel dual-headed toothbrush design for periodontal health: split- mouth randomized blind clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Optimal oral health largely depends on the successful removal of plaque through effective brushing, but success typically relies on user technique, time, and adherence. The aim was to compare the effectiveness of a newly introduced dual-headed toothbrush with a conventional single-headed toothbrush in control of plaque and gingival health using a split-mouth design. METHODS: In the study, 37 dental professionals used two types of toothbrushes: a dual-headed toothbrush on one side of the mouth (Test side) and a conventional single-headed toothbrush on the other side (Control side).

Modeling and analysis of firefighter musculoskeletal biomechanics for lower-extremity exoskeletons.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters face arduous tasks and extreme physical demands as part of their regular work. METHOD: This paper analyzes biomechanical data from four firefighting activities to identify critical areas requiring support and evaluates the effectiveness of integrating spring-based passive assistance and active assistance during these selected activities. Crucial areas demanding support were identified by analyzing joint torque profiles, joint reaction forces, and muscle group activation levels during the chosen firefighting activities. The impact of incorporating spring-based passiv

Standardized Protocol for Comprehensive, Non-Invasive Phenotyping of Atrial Myopathy in Sprague-Dawley Rat Models of Metabolic Syndrome Using Clinical-Grade Echocardiography and Electrophysiology Systems.

Background: Small animal models are essential for atrial fibrillation (AF) research. Researchers in AF use an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiography and invasive electrophysiology study (EPS) to assess atrial structural and electrical remodeling. In relatively smaller cardiac structures and rapid heart rates, the examination can be challenging without special tools designed for animal study. Moreover, conventional invasive EPSs often cause significant trauma, alter autonomic tone, and limit longitudinal evaluations. This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of repurposing hospital-grade

Training Interventions and Firefighter Performance: A Systematic Review.

Firefighting requires high levels of aerobic fitness, muscular strength and endurance to perform demanding tasks under extreme conditions. Although previous research has focused mainly on general physical fitness, fewer studies have examined the impact of physical training interventions on task-specific performance. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of structured physical training programs in improving firefighters' occupational task performance. Following PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature search was conducted in October 2024 across PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Sci

Development and test-retest reliability of a laboratory-based shipboard firefighting simulation for controlled performance testing.

Understanding shipboard firefighting performance is critical for improving crew safety and vessel preservation during damage control events. While prior research has been conducted in naval spaces, controlled simulations that assess performance without requiring naval vessels, personnel or specialised equipment are lacking. This study was designed to both develop and test a laboratory-based shipboard firefighting simulation. Consistent with shipboard firefighting activities, the simulation included walking, stair climbing, hose dragging, simulated boundary cooling, extinguisher carrying and ca
