The leading cause of death from total hip replacement is pulmonary embolism. Prophylactic anticoagulation has been effective in decreasing thromboembolic phenomena but has been associated with a high rate of complications. A low dose warfarin prophylaxis combined with anti-embolic hose, elevation of the legs and early ambulation was employed in 415 total hip replacements. Clinical thrombosis occurred in 2.4 per cent and there was 1.45 per cent pulmonary emboli but none resulted in death. L cells (mouse fibroblasts) supported the multiplication of the obligately intracellular parasitic bacterium Chlamydia psittaci (strain 6BC) when incubated in fresh growth medium (medium 199 + 5% fetal calf serum). The in vitro ability of 5 Hendersonula toruloidea and 1 control Microsporum gypseum strain to degrade human hair has been studied by analysis of culture medium and microscopy. H. toruloidea was able to utilize human hair as a source of nutrients but the extent varied according to the isolate and in all cases degradation was less marked than with M. gypseum.

The Couloximeter, a fuel cell designed to measure trace amounts of oxygen, was used to monitor the atmosphere in an anaerobic chamber. The device, easy to operate and to maintain, allowed both major and minor fluctuations in oxygen concentration to be measured.
