Mechanism-specific structural patterns in hospitalized severe mechanical open-globe injury: Implications for triage and operative preparedness in a 13-year tertiary referral cohort.

BACKGROUND: Severe mechanical open-globe injury (OGI) is a vision-threatening emergency. Injury mechanism is often available at first contact, whereas definitive structural classification may emerge only after clinical and operative assessment. We examined whether hospitalized severe mechanical OGI shows mechanism-specific structural patterns and whether final structural phenotype is associated with short-term inpatient course. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort of 1096 index hospitalizations for severe mechanical OGI during 2013-2025 at a tertiary referral center in e

Systemic Barium Toxicity Manifesting As Acute Hypokalemic Paralysis and Respiratory Failure Following a Firework Injury.

We present the case of a 63-year-old male who sustained a penetrating soft tissue injury to the right thigh from a commercial firework. Following uncomplicated surgical debridement and discharge, the patient returned within hours exhibiting rapidly progressive ascending paralysis, bulbar weakness, and respiratory failure requiring intubation. Laboratory evaluation revealed profound hypokalemia (1.4 mmol/L), hypophosphatemia, and rhabdomyolysis. The clinical presentation, coupled with the patient's report of the firework emitting a green flare, is most consistent with acute barium toxicity. For

Toxic effects and action pathways of full-volatility organic compounds from firework-related aerosols.

Firework activities release substantial organics yet their toxic effects and pathways to humans remain elusive. Here, we addressed the chemical fingerprints of full-volatility organic compounds (FVOCs) in firework-related aerosols, based on which to assess the association between toxic effects and Tox21 pathway dataset. The FVOCs concentration and overall toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) values during firework discharge reached 83.74 μg/m3 and 711.51 μg/m3, respectively, which are 11.74 and 5.05 times higher than those during non-firework periods. Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) contrib

Flare guns and trauma: Patterns, severity, and clinical implications from case and national surveillance data.

Flare guns are pyrotechnic devices capable of causing serious injury due to high-temperature combustion and projectile discharge. Though intended for signaling in maritime or wilderness settings, improper use can result in trauma patterns distinct from those seen with typical burns or fireworks. Despite their severity, flare gun injuries remain underreported and poorly characterized. We conducted a scoping review of PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid to identify 12 case reports involving 13 patients, and reviewed US National Electronic Injury Surveillance System records from 2015 to 2024, identifying 18

L-band radar quantifies major disturbance of birds by fireworks in an urban area.

Fireworks and other pyrotechnics are acknowledged as sources of disturbance to wildlife, with evidence that many species react adversely to their sight and sound at discharge. However, how firework releases impact wildlife within a city landscape is poorly understood. Here, we explore the effect of fireworks on urban birds using an L-band staring radar (90-degree sector out to a 5 km range) to capture bird activity derived from flight tracks (i.e. 3D visualisation of individual flying birds built from radar detections) within the city of Birmingham, UK. Comparing the tracks between baseline pe

Fine Particulate Matter Concentrations during Independence Day Fireworks Display in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Region, South Texas, USA.

Fireworks are typically discharged as a mark of celebration and joy in many societies spanning various cultures. In the United States of America, 4th July is celebrated as the Independence Day when the nation overthrew the British colonial yoke in 1776. While this day instills a sense of patriotism in every American's heart, it is also a major PM2.5 air pollution concern. This study is first of its type in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Region of South Texas, USA, that characterizes fine particulate matter pollution. Using a low-cost sensor (TSI BlueSky Air Quality Monitor), real-time PM2.5

Improving the Drilling Parameter Optimization Method Based on the Fireworks Algorithm.

The rate of penetration (ROP) is a manifestation of drilling efficiency, and optimizing drilling parameters is an important way to improve it. To achieve a low ROP for a Permian formation in a certain oil and gas field, three single wells in this formation were selected for optimization. An improved fireworks optimization algorithm was proposed for drilling parameter optimization. We first established the objective function that predicted the ROPs for the three wells. The objective function employed a multilayer perceptron neural network as the optimization adaptation function. We then optimiz

Source apportionment of PM2.5 using PMF combined online bulk and single-particle measurements: Contribution of fireworks and biomass burning.

Fireworks (FW) could significantly worsen air quality in short term during celebrations. Due to similar tracers with biomass burning (BB), the fast and precise qualification of FW and BB is still challenging. In this study, online bulk and single-particle measurements were combined to investigate the contributions of FW and BB to the overall mass concentrations of PM2.5 and specific chemical species by positive matrix factorization (PMF) during the Chinese New Year in Hong Kong in February 2013. With combined information, fresh/aged FW (abundant 140K2NO3+ and 213K3SO4+ formed from 113K2Cl+ dis

The Effects of Fireworks Discharge on Atmospheric PM2.5 Concentration in the Chinese Lunar New Year.

Discharging fireworks during the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations is a deep-rooted custom in China. In this paper, we analyze the effect of this cultural activity on PM2.5 concentration using both ground observations and satellite data. By combining remote sensing data, the problem of uneven spatial distribution of ground monitoring has been compensated, and the research time span has been expanded. The results show that the extensive firework displays on New Year's Eve lead to a remarkable increase in nationwide PM2.5 concentration, which were 159~223% of the average level, indicating the

Glass-containing gunshot residues and particles of industrial and occupational origins: Considerations for evaluating GSR traces.

In an ideal case, the value of traces would be determined numerically and presented through the use of likelihood ratios or verbal-equivalent scales. A problem in the evaluation of gunshot residue (GSR) evidence using these models is that in many shooting scenarios insufficient data exist to support a quantitative model of interpretation. The complex relationship that exists between ammunition composition and post-firing residues makes quantitative interpretation more difficult for GSR than for other traces such as glass. When evaluating the significance of traces in a quantitative model, the

[Analysis of the Composition of Atmospheric Fine Particles (PM2.5) Produced by Burning Fireworks].

Burning fireworks is one of the sources of atmospheric fine particles (PM2.5). The Chinese Spring Festival in Quanzhou City was taken as an example to study the effects of burning fireworks on the occurrence of PM2.5, and provide information on protection against air pollution caused by special pollution sources. The results showed that the concentrations of SO2, PM10, and PM2.5 increased appreciably, and the concentration of PM2.5 increased most significantly during the fireworks burning period. The peak daily average concentration in the urban area was about 4 times the annual average concen
