The loss of nitroglycerin (glycerol trinitrate (GTN), Perlinganit) when infused at various rates through polyvinyl chloride (PVC) tubing was measured against time by continuously monitoring the GTN concentrations at the outflow of the tubing using a direct photometric method. The portion of GTN loss depends on the rate of infusion; at flow rates of 3-6 ml/h, GTN losses of up to 60% may be expected. Trichodesma africanum L. (Boraginaceae), a desert plant of Africa and Asia, was found to contain beta-amyrin, beta-methyl oleanate, potassium nitrate and a nitrogen-containing toxin, each producing a notable toxic response when injected in laboratory mice and rats. Muscle contraction and a blood pressure reduction caused by the toxin are described. Pyrrolizidine alkaloids, e.g., trichodesmine, present in other Trichodesma species were also identified in the material by tlc and spectrometric methods. The effect of selected tablet components on the volatility of nitroglycerin from compressed sublingual tablets was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. The results, confirmed by chemical analyses, showed that nitroglycerin volatility is significantly reduced by the use of povidone USP and microcrystalline cellulose NF in tablet formulations. Organic remains, especially dung, of extinct ground sloths provide ideal material for radiocarbon dating. Rampart Cave, Arizona, revealed periodic occupation at intervals by the Shasta ground sloth from before 40,000 years ago until 11,000 years ago. Dates from other caves in the arid Southwest indicate that the Shasta ground sloth disappeared at very soon after the time of Clovis big game hunters. Ground sloth remains in South America are slightly younger. The timing of ground sloth extinction is in accord with the model of explosive overkill.

We conclude that population fluctuations in Microtus in southern Indiana are produced by a syndrome of changes in birth and death rates similar to that found in other species of voles and lemmings. The mechanisms which cause the changes in birth and death rates are demolished by fencing the population so that no dispersal can occur.
