Noise and public health.

Environmental noise has increased to the point that it affects large numbers of people. The most consistently demonstrated health effect of exposure to noise is hearing impairment. Other effects, such as stress reaction, irritability, fatigue and disturbances to physiologic function have been seen in laboratory research but are highly individualized and restricted to such specific populations as industrial workers. Rising background sound levels in communities due to increased traffic flow, industralization, work saving machinery, and other noise sources have caused community noise levels to b

[Effect of long-lasting noise on the plasma concentration of catecholamines, glucocorticosteroids and PBI in pigs].

Exposure of pigs with a body mass of 25-30 kg to long-lasting motor noise (108 dB, 60-8000 Hz, 72 hours) results in a considerable increase of catecholamine concentration in the plasma. Coincidently there is a sharp continuous decrease of the 11-OHKS in the plasma during the whole period of exposure to noise. Immediately after stopping the acoustic irritation the concentration of plasma corticosteroids increases again. The electroencephalogram (EEG) giving evidence of inhibition signs during exposure to noise an adaptation effect of the information processing system is concluded. The increase

Hearing loss due to combined effects of noise and sodium salicylate.

This study reports on hearing loss due to the combined effects of noise and sodium salicylate. A group of 10 adult chinchillas was used to test the hypothesis that the combined effects of prolonged exposure to noise and continuous salicylate intoxication will result in a larger Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS) in the audibility curve than either of the agents alone can produce. Extensive behavioral training was used to determine hearing thresholds. Though use of shock avoidance techniques, the animals were trained to respond to tones by jumping a low barrier. After demonstrating sufficient abil

[The course of plasma concentrations of cathecholamines and corticosteroids and of plasma--bound iodine (PBJ) in swine under the effect of noise and of various methods of raising].

Plasma concentrations of 11-OHKS were transitorily increased with significance in pigs, 25 kg to 45 kg in live weight, exposed to short-time engine noise (120 dB, 60 to 8,000 Hz, 60 minutes). Intensity of noise application and duration did not cause significant variation of plasma concentrations in catecholamines nor in P.B.J. The catecholamines were on a rising trend. Those results supported the conclusion that both quality and quantity of applied noise are perceived by store pigs as factors of disturbance. Their noise nature is comparable to that perceived by man and laboratory animals. Decl

[Effect of noise on the physiological functions in fowl. 3. Effects of primary and repetitive acoustic stimulation on glucose and free-fatty-acid plasma levels in broilers of different age groups].

The effects of first and repetitive noise applications to broilers, aged 14, 28, and 56 days, were tested by the responses of the energetic substrates plasma glucose concentration and free fatty acids. The plasma concentrations of glucose and free fatty acids in broilers at slaughter age with no exposure to noise were higher than those in younger animals. Regular daily noise application of 100 dB, 60 to 8,000 Hz, for 30 minutes, which began on the first day of age, led to rises in the plasma glucose levels of animals aged 56 and 28 days even prior to renewed acoustic stimulation, which obvious

[Longitudinal audiometric studies concerning progression of noise induced hearing loss (author's transl)].

The development of occupational hearing loss is very important for the recommendation to change the work place. 1960 Dieroff has described a phasic development of noise induced hearing loss. After ten years in noisy environment no further development of hearing impairment was determinable. Recent investigations point to a logarithmical respectively linear dependence of noise induced permanent threshold shift on the duration of exposure to noise. During our observation over a period of two years of employees working on noisy jobs, no stay of noise induced permanent threshold shift proceeding co

[The problem of severe noise induced hearing loss (author's transl)].

It can be observed that even after severe and long-lasting occupational exposure to noise the hardness of hearing caused by that noise is usually only low or medium-grade. Therefore the question is being examined whether there are any particular causal conditions for those rare cases in which the hardness of hearing caused by noise is more than medium-grade. High noise levels and high frequencies, together with continual constrained physical posture during work, seem to be such conditions according to the statistical evaluation of a wide range of observation data. In such cases the expert is r

Acute acoustic trauma - a clinical investigation and prognosis in 433 symptomatic soldiers.

An audiological and clinical study was carried out on 433 soldiers suffering from symptomatic acute acoustic trauma (AAT). The severity of AAT was similar following exposure to different types of firearms. The typical subjective complaints were tinnitus and hearing loss and the more severe the objective hearing loss, the more frequent were the typical subjective symptoms. It seems that there are critical sound pressure levels and critical frequencies below which the remnants of infectious processes in the middle ear may have a protective effect on the cochlea in cases of exposure to noise, whe

Music, noise and hearing damage.

This article sets out the issues involved in the consideration of noise-induced hearing damage. Exposure to noise can lead to a shift in the hearing threshold, resulting in loss of hearing. This shift may be either temporary or permanent. When it is permanent it is usually irreversible and not all persons can be helped by hearing aids. Permanent shifting of the hearing threshold may be caused by exposure to high sound levels. Ratios between lengths of exposure and frequency levels are given. The measurement of sound levels and assessment of acoustic hazards are presently related to non-fluctua

[Increase of connective tissue in rat hearts under exposure to noise and with magnesium deficiency (author's transl)].

Only a small amount of noise caused, combined with a nutritional Mg deficiency, a significant increase of collagen in the myocard of rats. While Mg deficiency or noise each for its own had no effect, the combination of both had a noxious effect. The results of these experiments give a hint to a correlation between collagen-increase in the myocard and an increase of urinal Catecholamine during the same time.

Hearing sensitivity in rural Michigan.

In a survey of the hearing sensitivity of a rural mid-Michigan population, 1,325 adults over 15 years of age received pure tone air conduction tests in a "mini" IAC room housed in a small trailer. In addition, a detailed questionnaire was administered to each person to obtain information about his exposure to noise vocationally and avocationally, family history of hearing loss, etc. Results indicated that, on the average, individuals displayed hearing losses considerably greater than was predicted on the basis of presbycusis alone. Also, people who had never had any industrial noise exposure h

Reliability of forecasts of annoyance reactions. A study of exposure to noise and air pollution.

Studies of the effect of external environmental factors on the individual are often carried out in order to obtain a basis for forecasts. The aim of the case studies reported has been to check the reliability of predictions of annoyance from four different external sources of discomfort. The results confirm the assumption that forecasts based on empirical studies provide a reliable picture of what the occurrence and extent of the annoyance reactions will be.

[Protein concentration of perilymph in guinea pigs after noise exposure].

The protein concentration in the perilymph of noise-exposed guinea pigs was investigated using a micromethod described previously. The animals were exposed to wide band noise at 140 dB for one hour unilaterally in a closed acoustic system. Perilymph was obtained after exposure at different intervals: immediately, 6 or 24 hours later. From animals exposed to noise, it is particularly more difficult to obtain perilymph without blood contamination than from normal ones. Even post mortem, it is difficult to obtain samples without blood contamination and without hemolysis, particularly from the sca

[The behaviour of the post-stimulatory acoustic response trigger threshold during experiments and with noise workers (author's transl)].

The findings on impedance jump responses after experimental and professional exposure to noise are presented and discussed. It can be shown that the trigger threshold of the impedance jump is raised only slightly by the development of a temporary shift of the threshold of audibility (TTS). By sealing the acoustic duct with ear-plugs (made of cotton and wax) however, the trigger threshold shifts by the same amount in decibel which originated through the sound attenuation itself. Furthermore, the impedance jump can be triggered more and more rarely with increasing exposure to noise during the wo

[A study of damaged acoustic biopotentials in guinea pigs following exposure to white noise].

62 guinea-pigs were treated twice exposed to white noise, 105 dB SPL, 20 to 20 000 cps for 40 minutes with a break of 24 hours in between. The cochlear microphonics (CM), the compound action potentials of the acoustic nerve (NAP) and the slow evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded. There were different degrees of damage to be seen in the acoustic biopotentials. The CM showed little damages only whereas the compound action potentials of the hearing nerve showed significant impairments in excitation and in adaptation. In the SEP excitation was decreased. From this, we may conclude that the CM mus
