Three-dimensional single beam nano-acoustic tweezer using ring-shaped ultrahigh-frequency ultrasonic needle transducer.

Acoustic tweezers use sound waves to manipulate bioparticles and cells, offering safety benefits due to ultrasound's deep penetration. However, traditional single-beam acoustic tweezers (SBAT) struggle with 3D trapping and spatial resolution due to strong axial scattering radiation forces and limited frequencies. Here, we address these challenges by developing a ring-shaped ultra-high frequency ultrasonic needle transducer (RS-UHF-NT), enabling 3D single-cell trapping, nanoparticle manipulation, and direct targeting. The transducer's ring-shaped design with a central hole minimizes near-field

Improving prefilled syringe injectability: influences of critical component attributes and human factors.

Prefilled syringes (PFSs) have emerged as a predominant primary packaging format for subcutaneous biopharmaceutical drug products. Subcutaneous administration typically requires low injection volumes and high drug concentrations, which frequently leads to a nonlinear increase in viscosity; that can impair injectability and feasibility for patient self-administration, potentially affecting drug safety and efficacy. This research investigates critical PFS design elements (including silicone oil coating, barrel diameter, plunger stopper contact length, needle length and inner diameter) that can b

Elastic Thermoplastic Polyurethane/Graphene Microneedle-Mesh Interfaces via Microfluidic Patterning for Electrophysiology in Neural Organoids.

Connecting electronics to the brain and neural organoids is critical for establishing machine-human interfaces, exploring complex mechanisms of the nervous system, and developing theranostic approaches. However, electrophysiological monitoring of these three-dimensional (3D) nervous tissues remains challenging due to their highly irregular surfaces, which severely limit electrode-tissue contact. Here, we present a stretchable mesh electrode array integrated with elastic graphene microneedles for interfacing with human neural organoids and their assemblies. The device is fabricated via microflu

Spatiotemporally Orchestrated Microneedle Patch Synergizing Photodynamic Therapy, ROS Scavenging, and Photosynthetic Oxygenation for Chronically Infected Wound Healing.

A multistage microneedle (MN) patch was developed to coordinate photodynamic therapy (PDT), oxidative stress reduction, and hypoxia relief for the spatiotemporal treatment of chronically infected wounds. The MN patch uses a hyaluronic acid base loaded with methylene blue (MB), which rapidly releases upon contact with tissue fluid. As the MN penetrates biofilm, it delivers MB effectively, achieving strong antibacterial PDT effects. The needle tips are made of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and contain carbon dots (CDs) and Chlorella pyrenoidosa. During inflammation, CDs scavenge ROS while C. pyre

Arthroscopic Medial Meniscus Posterior Root Repair and Centralization With Medial Capsulodesis Using a Knotless Soft Anchor.

Meniscal extrusion after posterior root tears of the medial meniscus disrupts the knee hoop-stress mechanism and increases joint contact pressure, accelerating osteoarthritis. Even with an anatomic root repair, extrusion often persists. Meniscal centralization has been proposed as a complementary strategy to restore joint biomechanics and reduce stress on the repaired root. This technique combines transtibial pull-out repair of the medial meniscus posterior root with meniscal centralization and medial capsulodesis. A tibial tunnel is created for root fixation using a FiberWire suture, and cent

Swift-acting structured lattice-enhanced caramelized sucrose system for painless sedative delivery.

Dexmedetomidine, known as an exceptionally potent and highly selective α2-adrenergic receptor agonist, is widely used as a safe and effective intravenous sedative agent in both surgical and nonsurgical settings. As the need for an optimized sedative delivery system grows-one that is not only easy to apply but also demonstrates superior efficacy, particularly among pediatric patients and other groups with lower levels of cooperation-innovative delivery methods are increasingly sought. To address this need, we developed a caramelized amorphous sucrose-based lunging microneedle array (CALM), inco

Bionic meta microneedle photonic crystal patch for advanced wound care.

Chronic wounds remain difficult to manage due to unstable adhesion, uncontrolled therapy, and the absence of real-time monitoring. Here, we present a bionic meta microneedle photonic crystal patch that integrates robust tissue adhesion, spatiotemporal drug delivery, and optical biosensing in a single platform. The patch combines drug-loaded biodegradable microneedles with a micropillar-inspired interface to establish a tissue-mimetic three-dimensional contact, ensuring secure attachment on moist and dynamic skin surfaces. Embedded photonic crystal structures function as high-sensitivity optica

Amphibious microneedles for programmable delivery of biomolecules and microorganisms in living plants.

Efficient cargo delivery is essential for plant trait engineering, yet existing methods are often species-specific and ineffective across diverse habitats. Here, we develop core-shell microneedles for targeted delivery of biomolecular cargoes and active microorganisms into both terrestrial and aquatic plants. The microneedle architecture is rationally engineered to resist water exposure and release cargo upon contact with plant interstitial fluid, enabling controlled delivery into tissues and cells. We demonstrate that these core-shell microneedles can efficiently transport diverse cargoes, fr

A needle-form 3-omega sensor for thermal conductivity measurements of soft materials and biological tissues.

Soft materials, liquids, and biological tissues are of increasing interest as thermal materials for applications in energy storage, electrical/electrochemical systems, and cryopreservation, but thermal characterization of these materials can be challenging experimentally. Here, we extend the robust 3-omega method, which is traditionally based on a planar form factor with external sample contact, to a microfabricated needle-form sensor that can be plunged directly into a sample. We further demonstrate the reusability of this sensor, the ability to easily make thermal contact by plunging the sen

Development of a Test Environment for the Validation of needle mounted Vibroacoustic Sensors.

In this paper, we describe a test environment for the development, performance validation, and optimization of a device to capture vibroacoustic signals during needle-tissue interactions using micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) microphones. Vibroacoustic sensing provides the opportunity to improve in terms of accuracy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) not only by delivering real-time feedback, but also by improving surgeons navigation. In an attempt to explore this methodology, commercially available MEMS microphones were used in direct contact with conven

Colorimetric sensing for transdermal phospho-Tau 181 detection mediated by wearable microneedle functionalized with gold nanoparticle (MN-AuNP).

Microneedles (MNs) have rapidly emerged as powerful tools in wearable biosensing, providing minimally invasive access to interstitial fluid (ISF). Among the neurodegenerative based biomarkers detectable in ISF, phosphorylated Tau at threonine 181 (p-Tau181) is reaching a clinically evaluable significance for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other tauopathies. Elevated p-Tau181 levels are strongly correlated with abnormal Tau aggregation in the brain and with cognitive decline. Current diagnostic methods rely on invasive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling or costly laboratory immunoassays and radio

Fluorescent Microneedle Sensor Array for Continuously Monitoring Sodium and Hydrogen Ion Concentrations in Interstitial Fluid and Its Application in Diabetes Complication Management.

The homeostasis and regulation of sodium and hydrogen ions are crucial in the pathophysiology of diabetes, as metabolic dysregulation often leads to electrolyte disturbances and acid-base imbalance. Current diagnostic tools, such as blood gas analysis in a hospital, are invasive, time-consuming, and strictly demanding professional skills. To cope with this problem, we have worked out a minimally invasive, dual-ion-sensitive microneedle sensor array to simultaneously monitor interstitial sodium and hydrogen ion concentrations. By integrating two ion-sensitive fluorescent materials and a long-li

A Bio-Inspired Artificial Nerve Simulator for Ex Vivo Validation of Implantable Neural Interfaces Equipped with Plug Electrodes.

The development of implantable neural interfaces is essential for enabling bidirectional communication between the nervous system and prosthetic devices, yet their evaluation still relies primarily on in vivo models which are costly, variable, and ethically constrained. Here, we report a bio-inspired artificial nerve simulator engineered as a reproducible ex vivo platform for pre-implantation testing of plug-type electrodes. The simulator is fabricated from a conductive hydrogel composite based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO), polyaniline (PANI), agarose, sucrose, and sodium chloride, with emb

[Intraoral lip augmentation].

Lip augmentation is a procedure frequently performed by cosmetic physicians, as well as cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons. Atrophy of the lips and the surrounding areas or even in the perioral region is often the result of malformations related to insufficient development of structures during embryogenesis, but also the consequence of tissue aging, which affects patients unequally. The general principle of lip and midfacial augmentation involves injections using needles or cannulas that directly puncture the skin at certain strategic points, in order to correctly position the substance inte

Spinal Needle-Guided Arthroscopic Transosseous Repair for Bony Bankart Lesions.

Bony Bankart lesions present considerable challenges in shoulder surgery, particularly when large. While smaller lesions can often be treated effectively using the single-row technique, larger lesions require more complex approaches. Several arthroscopic techniques have been developed to manage these lesions. Although the double-row technique is effective, it has the disadvantage of placing suture material on the articular surface. In contrast, the transosseous technique permits adequate compression and surface contact without involving the articular surface; however, it is technically demandi

Active microneedle patch equipped with spontaneous bubble generation for enhanced rheumatoid arthritis treatment.

Rationale: The utilization of dissolving microneedles (MNs) facilitates the painless delivery of pharmaceuticals via the transdermal route. However, conventional MNs rely on passive diffusion through the gradual dissolving of the matrix, which can impede the therapeutic efficacy of the delivered drugs. Methods: In this study, we present the development of a novel degradable active MNs platform. This platform employs sodium bicarbonate and citric acid loaded in a dissolving MNs patch as a built-in motor for deeper and faster intradermal payload delivery. The sodium bicarbonate microparticles an

A Transformative Wearable Corneal Microneedle Patch for Efficient Therapy of Ocular Injury and Infection.

Ocular injury and infection are significant causes of vision impairment and blindness globally. Effective treatment is, however, challenging due to the physical barrier of the cornea, which restricts drug penetration in the eye, as well as the presence of eye injury that necessitates continuous delivery of growth factors on the ocular surface for cornea healing. Here, we introduce a transformative wearable corneal microneedle (MN) patch designed for efficient therapy of ocular injury and infection. The MN patch comprises water-soluble tips that encapsulate antibacterial nanoparticles (NPs), al

Acupuncture for neonatal abstinence syndrome in newborn infants.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a drug-withdrawal syndrome, mostly occurring after antenatal exposure to opioids. A neonate may be born physically dependent on opioid medications, which causes withdrawal symptoms (such as high-pitched crying, disruptions in the sleep-wake cycle and tremors) after birth. This is diagnosed with a standardised withdrawal assessment, such as the Finnegan score. Newborns developing NAS require medical treatment and longer hospital stays after birth than neonates without this condition. Treatments for NAS include multiple multimodal treatments to e

[Development of a balance device for anti-toppling in application of warm needling].

During the operation of warm needling, the needle may be tilted and bent to a large degree, which will cause high temperature of moxibustion on the skin surface around, and even burns in patients. To solve this problem, the team developed a balance fixator for acupuncture needle that can be used at acupoints in various parts of the body, such as on the abdomen, waist, limbs and face. The device is composed of 3 parts, including three (or more)-bifurcated sleeve, cushion pad, and circular fixed base-plate, forming an integrated structure. The three (or more)-bifurcated sleeve increases the cont
