A rare cause of vertebral osteomyelitis: the first case report of rat-bite fever in Portugal.

Rat-bite fever is a rarely diagnosed illness caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis . Although this disease is distributed worldwide, there have been few cases reported in Europe. Here, we report a case of vertebral osteomyelitis and sternoclavicular septic arthritis caused by S. moniliformis in a Portuguese patient previously bitten by a rat. Laboratory diagnosis was performed using molecular identification. This is the first case report of rat-bite fever in Portugal. The case described here serves as a reminder for physicians to consider this diagnosis in patients who have developed fever sy

Risk of maritime introduction of plague from Madagascar to Mayotte.

Plague is a rodent-borne disease caused by Yersinia pestis. Most human infections are bubonic plague, as a result of being bitten by infected rodent fleas. Madagascar, Democratic Republic of Congo and Peru are the three most affected countries. Plague was introduced into eastern Madagascar in 1898 by boat from India. It is estimated that the risk of introduction of plague from Madagascar to neighboring islands is very high due to the maritime links. We conducted a study of plague reservoirs and vectors in Longoni Port in Mayotte and Mahajanga Port in Madagascar during two seasons to highlight

Neurogenic mediators contribute to local edema induced by Micrurus lemniscatus venom.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Micrurus is one of the four snake genera of medical importance in Brazil. Coral snakes have a broad geographic distribution from the southern United States to Argentina. Micrurine envenomation is characterized by neurotoxic symptoms leading to dyspnea and death. Moreover, various local manifestations, including edema formation, have been described in patients bitten by different species of Micrurus. Thus, we investigated the ability of Micrurus lemniscatus venom (MLV) to induce local edema. We also explored mechanisms underlying this effect, focusing on participation of neurop

Acute Toxicity Study and the In Vitro Cytotoxicity of a Black Lingzhi Medicinal Mushroom, Amauroderma rugosum (Agaricomycetes), from Malaysia.

Amauroderma rugosum is a wild medicinal mushroom also known as budak cendawan sawan. Members of the indigenous Malaysian Temuan community wear the fresh stipes as a necklace to prevent epileptic seizure and unremitting crying by babies. In our previous studies, A. rugosum exhibited significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to determine the toxicity (in the event that a stipe is accidentally bitten) and cytotoxicity of this mushroom on Sprague-Dawley rats and selected cell lines. A. rugosum was orally administered to test chemicals according to Organisa

Rat-bite fever due to Streptobacillus notomytis isolated from a human specimen.

Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a disease that usually presents with fever, arthralgia and skin rash. Streptobacillus moniliformis was considered the main cause of RBF among the genus Streptobacillus. Although with similar clinical presentation, RBF due to Streptobacillus notomytis is unusual in humans. To the best of our knowledge, we present a case involving the first isolate of S. notomytis in humans. A 63-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with fever, rash and polyarthritis. She recalled being bitten by a rat on her finger 5 days before presentation. Clinical manifestations were compatibl

Biodistribution and Lymphatic Tracking of the Main Neurotoxin of Micrurus fulvius Venom by Molecular Imaging.

The venom of the Eastern coral snake Micrurus fulvius can cause respiratory paralysis in the bitten patient, which is attributable to β-neurotoxins (β-NTx). The aim of this work was to study the biodistribution and lymphatic tracking by molecular imaging of the main β-NTx of M. fulvius venom. β-NTx was bioconjugated with the chelator diethylenetriaminepenta-acetic acid (DTPA) and radiolabeled with the radionuclide Gallium-67. Radiolabeling efficiency was 60%-78%; radiochemical purity ≥92%; and stability at 48 h ≥ 85%. The median lethal dose (LD50) and PLA₂ activity of bioconjugated β-NTx decre

[Mammal bite management].

BACKGROUND: Animal bites are a major public health problem, it is estimated that 2% of the population is bitten each year. Most bites are by dogs and the risk factors include young children, men, certain breeds of dogs and untrained dogs. The risk of infection after bites differs between animal species and depends on the animal teeth and oral flora. CONCLUSIONS: Animal bites are still a major cause of morbidity in patients of all ages and have caused several preventable childhood deaths. These wounds often become infected. If the wound requires it, early surgical evaluation must be performed.

Leptospirosis-Associated Severe Pulmonary Hemorrhagic Syndrome with Lower Back Pain as an Initial Symptom.

BACKGROUND Leptospirosis is a zoonosis transmitted through urine of infected animals. Symptoms range from mild influenza-like symptoms to severe pulmonary hemorrhagic syndrome (SPHS); the latter are often fatal. The serogroup distribution in Denmark has changed from 1988 to 2012, with Icterohaemorrhagiae and Sejroe now being predominant. CASE REPORT A 45-year-old Danish woman living in an area endemic for Hanta virus, without prior medical history, was admitted because of lower back pain radiating to the left hip, fever, headache, nausea, and malaise. Two weeks before admission she had been bi

A Case Study of Rat Bite Fever Caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis.

We report a case of rat bite fever, diagnosed based on positive cultures of Streptobacillus moniliformis from blood and synovial fluid. The patient was a 45-year-old man who presented with history of a rat bite and alcoholic liver cirrhosis. He had been bitten on his third finger by a rat, which was caught in a mousetrap installed in his house. Over the course of approximately 2 weeks after the bite, the patient developed fever, rash, and arthralgia. The patient was admitted to our hospital and treated with a combination of ampicillin-sulbactam, vancomycin (VAN), and minocycline (MIN) antibiot

Experimentally induced tick toxicosis in rats bitten by Ornithodoros brasiliensis (Chelicerata: Argasidae): a clinico-pathological characterization.

Ornithodoros brasiliensis, also known as the mouro tick, is an argasid tick only found in the highlands of Southern Brazil. O. brasiliensis parasitism is associated with severe reactions in its hosts ranging from local pruritus and pain to systemic disturbances. Recently, the re-emergence of O. brasiliensis parasitism in humans and dogs drew attention to the clinical findings induced by its bite, which are poorly understood and described. Moreover, rare experimental data about tick bite effects under controlled conditions were available. Thus, this study aimed to describe clinical and patholog

Repellency of DEET, picaridin, and three essential oils to Triatoma rubida (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

The kissing bug, Triatoma rubida (Uhler) is a common hematophagous bug in Tucson, AZ, and is responsible for causing severe allergic reactions in some bitten individuals. DEET, picaridin, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and citronella oil were tested for repellency to T. rubida and its ability to probe and feed on a small restrained rat. No long range repellency was observed with any of the test materials. The lowest repellent concentrations observed were: 10% DEET, 7% picaridin; 30% tea tree oil, 3.3% peppermint oil, and 0.165% citronella oil. Only citronella oil was able to stop all probing an

Evidence that rodent control strategies ought to be improved to enhance food security and reduce the risk of rodent-borne illnesses within subsistence farming villages in the plague-endemic West Nile region, Uganda.

Rodents pose serious threats to human health and economics, particularly in developing countries where the animals play a dual role as pests: they are reservoirs of human pathogens, and they inflict damage levels to stored products sufficient to cause food shortages. To assess the magnitude of the damage caused by rodents to crops, their level of contact with humans, and to better understand current food storage and rodent control practices, we conducted a survey of 37 households from 17 subsistence farming villages within the West Nile region of Uganda. Our survey revealed that rodents cause

A poisonous surprise under the coat of the African crested rat.

Plant toxins are sequestered by many animals and the toxicity is frequently advertised by aposematic displays to deter potential predators. Such 'unpalatability by appropriation' is common in many invertebrate groups and also found in a few vertebrate groups. However, potentially lethal toxicity by acquisition has so far never been reported for a placental mammal. Here, we describe complex morphological structures and behaviours whereby the African crested rat, Lophiomys imhausi, acquires, dispenses and advertises deterrent toxin. Roots and bark of Acokanthera schimperi (Apocynaceae) trees are

Animal and human bites in children.

BACKGROUND: Mammals that live closely and interact with man and man himself can inflict injury on children in the home through bites. Previous reports on mammalian bites in Nigeria are few and mainly on dogs, though other mammals also inflict injuries on children. There are also no reports on the injuries arising from the bites of these other mammals. OBJECTIVE: To document the range, pattern, distribution and complications of mammalian bites in children. METHODS: The hospital records of all patients aged 18 years and below with history of animal and human bite admitted over a twelve-year pe

[Unexplained fever after exposure to rats: rat bite fever or Haverhill fever].

A 24-year old man presented himself to the emergency ward with complaints of fever, nausea, headache, muscle ache and chest pain. Two weeks before presentation he had been bitten by a pet rat. We determined that he had bacteraemia caused by a Streptobacillus moniliformis infection, which led to the development of an illness called rat bite fever. S. moniliformis is a pleomorphic gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that is considered part of the normal nasopharyngeal flora in rats. It is the cause of two similar illnesses: rat bite fever and Haverhill fever. Clinicians should consider these infe
