Epidemiology of animal bites in Rafsanjan, southeast of Islamic Republic of Iran, 2003-05.

The incidence of animal bites in the Islamic Republic of Iran has been increasing in recent years. In a descriptive study of 1542 patients referred to a health centre in Rafsanjan city from 2003 to 2005, the incidence of animal bites in the area was estimated as 180, 195 and 241 per 100 000 in 2003, 2004 and 2005 respectively. Of the patients, 74% were bitten by dogs, 23% by cats and 3% by other animals (monkeys, rats, foxes, bats, donkeys, etc.). The mean time delay from injury to initial management was 15.1 (SD 29.8) hours. Rabies vaccine was given to 85% of cases, rabies vaccine plus rabies

Study of patient's injuries by stingrays, lethal activity determination and cardiac effects induced by Himantura gerrardi venom.

Stingrays are common inhabitants in the northern waters of the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. In the present study, the clinical aspects of injuries induced in three patients bitten by stingrays in Hormozgan province waters were first examined. The LD(50) of crude venom extract obtained from the most common stingray in Hormozgan province (Himantura gerrardi) was then estimated by up-and-down dosing and double dose methods in mice. Third and finally, the cardiac symptoms induced by injection of the extract from the venomous spines were evaluated in rats. Intense pain was noticed in all human cases.

Rat bite fever: a misnomer?

We report a case of rat bite fever (Streptobacillus moniliformis) in a young man who presented generally unwell with pyrexia, vomiting, arthralgia and deranged liver function. Two weeks before his illness he had disposed of a dead rat but was not bitten by it. This zoonotic infection was treated with broad spectrum antibiotics and he made a complete recovery. It is a rarely diagnosed but likely common infection given the frequent contact between humans and rodents. In the past, confirmation of the organism has been difficult due its dislike of culture mediums, but the advent of polymerase chai

Construction of a taste-blind medaka fish and quantitative assay of its preference-aversion behavior.

In vertebrates, the taste system provides information used in the regulation of food ingestion. In mammals, each cell group within the taste buds expresses either the T1R or the T2R taste receptor for preference-aversion discrimination. However, no such information is available regarding fish. We developed a novel system for quantitatively assaying taste preference-aversion in medaka fish. In this study, we prepared fluorescently labeled foods with fine cavities designed to retain tastants until they were bitten by the fish. The subjects were fed food containing a mixture of amino acids and in

Rat-bite fever identified by polymerase chain reaction detection of Streptobacillus moniliformis DNA.

A 74-year-old woman presented with erythema of the extremities, a high fever and arthralgia after being bitten by a rat. The patient was diagnosed as having rat-bite fever based on the symptoms and clinical course, as well as the polymerase chain reaction detection of Streptobacillus moniliformis DNA in the crust of the bite site. This is the first case to be diagnosed using polymerase chain reaction on a crusted skin lesion specimen. Although clinical symptoms initially remitted with minocycline therapy, they relapsed. Subsequent administration of piperacillin sodium resulted in complete disa

[Morphologic observation and 3D reconstruction of aortic endothelial cells in diabetic rats with the use of atomic force microscope].

This experiment was designed to observe the morphologic changes of aortic endothelial cells in diabetic rats and to investigate the influence of hyperglycemia. Diabetic rats were used and their aortic endothelial cells were observed under atomic force microscope, then these pictures were 3D reconstructed. The results showed that numerous microvilli and round window-hollow-like structures and insect- bitten-like caveloae were scattered on the surface of the vascular endothelia, and a few ball-like granules were adhering to the endothelial cells. In diabetic rats, microvilli decreased and the ce

Rat-bite fever: a cautionary tale.

We present the first ever report of streptobacillary rat-bite fever in New Zealand. The patient was a young man who was admitted with systemic sepsis. He presented with a high fever, hypotension, and tender axillary lymphadenopathy. He had been bitten by a rat a week earlier. Blood cultures grew Streptobacillus moniliformis, thus confirming the diagnosis. The literature on rat-bite fever is also reviewed.

Dogs as vectors of Streptobacillus moniliformis infection?

Rat bite fever is a bacterial zoonosis transmitted through the bite of rats. One of the two etiological agents that cause rat bite fever is Streptobacillus moniliformis. Rat bite fever is rare and very likely under diagnosed but occurs worldwide. Other animals, like dogs and cats that have mouthed a rat are often mentioned in the literature as potential risks for the attraction of rat bite fever. However, rat bite fever caused by the bite of a dog or cat has very seldom been documented. Therefore, to identify the possible risk for humans to become infected with S. moniliformis after having bee

[Epidemiological aspects of human and animal rabies in the urban area of Bamako, Mali].

The district of Bamako is the political and economical capital city of Mali with 1,800,000 inhabitants. The goal of the present retrospective study was to determine the frequency of animal bites, human and animal rabies on the one hand and to determine the frequency and the nature of mad animals on the other hand from January 2000 to December 2003 (4 years). To achieve this goal, we have analysed registers and documents related to rabies in the department of prevention and fight against diseases, the central veterinary laboratory, and also at the lazaret clinic involved in caring for human rab

Preparation of a novel antivenom against Atractaspis and Walterinnesia venoms.

The two deadly snakes, Walterinnesia aegyptia (black desert cobra) and Atractaspis microlepidota (mole viper) share a common habitat in the central, eastern and western provinces of Saudi Arabia. Bites by either snake were characterized by rapid death, sometimes before reaching any medical facility. Confusing reports of "a black snake bite" are frequently found. The NAVPC had succeeded in preparing a highly effective antivenom against W. aegyptia venom which is now available in the market, but no antivenom against Atractaspis venom is found worldwide. This is probably because of the low molecu

[Rat bite: an unusual cause of orbital cellulitis].

Rat bite is rarely reported in the literature. We report the case of a 33-year-old woman who was bitten by a rat on her upper eyelid. The clinical examination showed a large palpebral edema extending to the side of the face, associated with local signs of inflammation. Visual acuity was preserved and tomodensitometry showed a small exophthalmia that did not extend to the sinuses. This lesion led to a diagnosis of orbital cellulitis. Progression was favorable with antibiotics: amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, gentamicin, and metronidazole. The authors discuss the compromised prognosis of this dise

Duvernoy's gland secretion of Philodryas patagoniensis from the northeast of Argentina: its effects on blood coagulation.

Duvernoy's gland secretion of Philodryas patagoniensis exhibits high hemorrhagic activity, containing enzymes that are able to degrade the vascular wall. In this work we aim to determine if the secretion can also affect the hemostatic system by causing changes in blood coagulation. Procoagulant and coagulant activities were evaluated on plasma and fibrinogen, respectively. The delay in the thrombin clotting time of fibrinogen previously incubated with the secretion was also determined. Specific hydrolysis of fibrinogen and fibrin incubated with the secretion at different time intervals was sho

Envenoming bites by kraits: the biological basis of treatment-resistant neuromuscular paralysis.

Beta-bungarotoxin, a neurotoxic phospholipase A2 is a major fraction of the venom of kraits. The toxin was inoculated into one hind limb of young adult rats. The inoculated hind limb was paralysed within 3 h, and remained paralysed for 2 days. The paralysis was associated with the loss of synaptic vesicles from motor nerve terminal boutons, a decline in immunoreactivity of synaptophysin, SNAP-25 and syntaxin, a loss of muscle mass and the upregulation of NaV(1.5) mRNA and protein. Between 3 and 6 h after the inoculation of toxin, some nerve terminal boutons exhibited clear signs of degeneratio

Plague: from natural disease to bioterrorism.

Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of plague, an enzootic vectorborne disease usually infecting rodents (rats) and fleas. Humans can become infected after being bitten by fleas that have fed on infected rodents. In humans, the disease usually occurs in the form of bubonic plague. In rare cases, the infection spreads to the lungs via the bloodstream and causes secondary pneumonic plague. Person-to-person transmission has been described for pneumonic plague but is rare in primary bubonic plague. Bubonic plague can usually be treated successfully with antibiotics; however, pneumonic plague de

Hypovolaemic shock by rat bites. A paradigmatic case of social deprivation.

This report describes an unusual complication of a comparatively common problem of rat bites, causing a near fatal case of hypovolaemic shock. An 8 month old girl was bitten on her head and hands by Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) while sleeping after falling from her parent's bed. She could not be attended to because of her parents' alcoholic condition. She was found in hypovolaemic shock. She required ventilatory and haemodynamic support for five days. At late follow up, the child had no medical problem. In this case, evident social risk factors include extreme poverty, poor hygiene, and rat
