Reported is the case of a 32 years old man, who developed a severe condition with recurrent fever episodes, lymphadenopathy, liver and spleen enlargement, and severe headaches 6 weeks after having been bitten by a rat. The headaches even increased during the further course. Psychological tests indicated an increased instability and irritability. The brain scan revealed diffuse cerebral ischemias (on the basis of an increased cerebrovascular resistance). Following the treatment with penicillin, the symptoms cleared almost completely. Although the pathogenic organism could not be identified, the

A patient who had been exposed to ticks and who had also been bitten by a laboratory rat developed fever, headache, and a rash. He was treated with chloramphenicol for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and recovered. Blood cultures, however, grew Streptobacillus moniliformis, a causative agent of rat bite fever. The case report illustrates the clinical similarities between rat bite fever and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Attack of dominant colony males of an albino rat (Rattus norvegicus) strain, on introduced strangers, produced a non-random distribution of bites, with ventral trunk virtually never bitten. Also, vibrissae-contact of attacker and defender interfered with bites to the defender's head and upper back. The specific agonistic reactions of attacking and defending rats appeared to involve strategies based on these limitation on attack: defenders utilized 'boxing' and lying 'on-the-back' behaviour, which interposed ventral trunk and vibrissae between attacker and defender. In turn, the 'lateral displa

1. Two cases of rat-bite fever with a typical fever course and a maculopapular exanthem came under my observation in Mexico. 2. A spiral organism morphologically identical with one known in Japan as the causative agent of Sodoku was found in a Mus decumanus caught in Mexico City. 3. The organism was found to be pathogenic for white rats and guinea pigs, the infection being fatal for guinea pigs. 4. The bite of an infected guinea pig led in one of two instances to infection and death of the animal bitten. 5. The microscopical findings in the guinea pigs infected with this microorganism closely

1. Since our first report on the discovery of the cause of rat-bite fever, we have been able to prove the existence of the same spirochete in five out of six more cases which have come under our observation. 2. The clinical symptoms of rat-bite fever are inflammation of the bitten parts, paroxysms of fever of the relapsing type, swelling of the lymph glands, and eruption of the skin, all occurring after an incubation period usually of from 10 to 22 days, or longer. 3. Our spirochete is present in the swollen local lesion of the skin and the enlarged lymph glands. But as the spirochetes are so

1. We have confirmed Ogata's results in experimental rat-bite fever caused by the bite of rats. 2. In our experiments with guinea pigs, swelling and congestion of the bitten parts, swelling of the subcutaneous lymph nodes, fever, and loss of weight were the typical symptoms. The progress of the fever was not so regular as in human cases, but we find records in the literature of patients who showed irregular fever types or were afebrile. The chief points that we noted in the anatomical view of the guinea pigs were swelling and congestion of the lymph gland system and acute changes in the adrena

We have already described briefly the portals of entry and of excretion of the pathogenic spirochetes. We may mention here that we have twice prevented epidemics by disinfection of the ground and the removal of the inundated water in certain places in coal mines. In one mine 19 out of 50 workmen, and in another 9 out of 30 workmen came down with Weil's disease in about 2 weeks. We have already pointed out that the period during which the pathogenic spirochetes are excreted in the urine continues, as a rule, for 40 days, and that we must, therefore, apply disinfection for at least 40 days after
