A CNN-Based Image Detection System for Full-Surface Defects in Brown Rice.

In order to enable accurate and efficient rice quality evaluation through full-surface defect detection of brown rice, a detection system based on convolutional neural network (CNN) was developed. A dataset of images of five categories-unhulled, normal, broken, cracked, and insect-bitten brown rice-was collected. Three CNN models, YOLOv5s, YOLOv7, and Faster R-CNN, were evaluated and compared with traditional algorithms including support vector machine (SVM) and back propagation (BP) neural networks. Experimental results showed that CNN-based methods in the present database significantly outpe

Motivational factors and financial incentives to mitigate tail biting in pig production in Finland.

Tail biting affects the health and welfare of pigs, the quality of pig carcasses, and the profitability of production in both weaner and finishing pig production. There are specific quality criteria for weaned pigs, and tail damage can lead to a reductions in the purchase price of weaner pigs as well as to carcass rejections at the slaughterhouse. Although this issue is important, research has paid little attention to tail biting in weaner pig production. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of various motivational factors and economic incentives on the management of tail biting o

The development of the Taipan Antivenom - An Australian story from Far North Queensland.

The development of the taipan antivenom in Australia is a unique story, centred in Far North Queensland. It is infused with idealism and heroism. The taipan is one of the world's deadliest snakes. A live specimen of the coastal taipan was not captured until 1950, and the antivenom only became available in 1955. Until then a bite from the coastal taipan was universally fatal. Kevin Budden a snake enthusiast was bitten in the process of capturing the specimen. Budden extracted a promise from those around him that the snake would not be killed but be sent to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in

Proprioceptive judgements made with the hand and the jaw: two distinct but functionally related body parts.

We compared proprioceptive judgements made within a single frame of reference (e.g., grasp → grasp; i.e., low-level) and those made between frames of reference (e.g., grasp → vision; i.e., high-level) at the hand and jaw in 30 healthy participants. Participants judged the size of grasped or bitten objects of different sizes. Compared to high-level judgements, low-level judgements were more accurate (hand: mean difference in mean absolute error: 0.20 mm [95% CI 0.12 to 0.27]; jaw: (0.15 mm [0.09 to 0.20]) and precise (hand: mean difference in RMSE: 3.94 [2.73 to 5.15]; jaw: 1.67 [1.19 to 2.14])

Dog-related injuries requiring medical attention in Skaraborg district, Sweden.

AIM: The aim of this study was to identify factors associated with dog-related injuries by analysing data collected from 5908 patients seeking treatment at healthcare facilities in Skaraborg district, Sweden, over the years 2001-2016. METHODS: To describe factors associated with dog-related injuries, we analysed variables from four categories: people, that is, characteristics (gender and ages) of the patients who were injured; the circumstances in which the injuries occurred; the causes and types of injuries caused by dogs (injury mechanisms); and whether the injuries resulted in hospitalisat

Genomic characterization of the first goat-associated orf virus genome sequenced directly from a human clinical sample in Portugal.

The orf virus (ORFV) is a neglected zoonotic virus, with sporadic human infections, historically identified through clinical suspicion rather than molecular confirmation. We report the first molecularly confirmed human ORFV case in Portugal and the first goat-associated human-derived ORFV genome. Direct hybrid capture sequencing of a clinical biopsy from a veterinary student bitten by a goat yielded a 129.5 kb genome. Phylogenetic analysis placed the isolate within a goat-associated cluster, distinct from the two previously available human-derived genomes. This case highlights the value of mol

Development of a genetically engineered multivalent subunit vaccine against "struck", "braxy", lamb dysentery, and enterotoxemia in sheep.

The development of genetically engineered multivalent subunit vaccines is needed to provide protection against infections caused by Clostridium septicum and multiple types of Clostridium perfringens. In this study, a pET-32a(+) plasmid encoding the C. septicum α-toxin gene and the C. perfringens β-toxin gene was constructed; a positive clone was designated pET-32a-α-β1. This plasmid, along with pET-32a-α-β2-ε-previously engineered to express a C. perfringens α-β2-ε trivalent recombinant chimeric fusion protein-was transformed into Escherichia coli DE3 for recombinant protein expression after i

'Once Bitten': A Case of Tetanus Following Snakebite in Australia.

We present a case of tetanus following a snakebite in Victoria, Australia. An otherwise healthy 58-year-old woman presented following suspected Tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) bite with envenomation. She was not up-to-date with tetanus vaccination and was not offered a booster vaccination. She re-presented 12 days later with features consistent with tetanus infection and was treated with tetanus immunoglobulin and metronidazole with clinical improvement. Snakebites remain a risk for tetanus infection and the assessment of tetanus risk should be included within clinical guidelines for Australia

Behind the Bite: Ownership and Breed as Predictors of Dog Bite Severity.

INTRODUCTION: Each year in the United States, approximately 400,000 people bitten by dogs require medical attention in the emergency room. There has been little investigation into identification of canine characteristics associated with higher morbidity and mortality. This study aims to evaluate dog breed and ownership status as predictors of morbidity, need for surgical intervention, and health care burden following dog bite injuries. METHODS: The trauma registry at an American College of Surgeons-verified Level I trauma center was queried for "dog bites" from 2016 to 2024 for this retrospec

[Horned-Viper Bite: A Clinical Case and Review of Therapeutic Approach].

Envenomation by the horned viper (Vipera latastei), endemic to the Iberian Peninsula, typically causes local and hematologic toxicity, potentially leading to venom-induced consumption coagulopathy. We report the case of a 39-year-old man bitten on the fourth finger of his left hand. The first dose of antivenom (ViperFav®) was administered 10 hours after the incident, followed by two additional doses due to persistent coagulopathy and transient thrombocytopenia. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (10 sessions) and a transdermal nitroglycerin patch were used to optimize local perfusion as adjuvant therap

Predictors of In-Hospital Mortality Among Paediatric Snakebite Patients in Northeastern Nigeria: A Survival Analysis Study.

Paediatric patients of snakebite envenoming are vulnerable to severe complications due smaller body size and dependence on adults for timely medical attention. However, there is limited literature on risk factors for mortality in pediatric populations, particularly within rural Nigerian settings, where snakebite envenoming is prevalent. A retrospective study was conducted using medical records at the Snakebite Treatment and Research Hospital (SBTRH) in Northeastern Nigeria, including paediatric patients aged 0 through 17 years who presented with a snakebite from January through December 2024.

Core outcome set for intervention research on snakebite envenomation in South Asia.

BACKGROUND: The 2019 WHO strategy to reduce snakebite burden emphasises the need for fostering research on snakebite treatments. A core outcome set (COS) is a consensus minimal list of outcomes that should be measured in research on a particular condition. We aimed to develop a COS for snakebite research in South Asia, the region with the highest burden. METHODS: We used data from a systematic review of outcomes to develop a long list of outcomes which were rated in two rounds of online Delphi survey with healthcare providers, patients and the public, and potential COS users to develop a COS

Different Alginate Spherification Methods for Producing Hydrogel Beads Loaded with Vitamins B9 and B12 to Support Hydration in Older Adults with Dysphagia.

Adequate hydration and nutrition are crucial for preventing health complications and functional decline in older adults, especially those with dysphagia. This study examined the use of direct frozen and reverse spherification, with different residence times, to create alginate-based, high-water-content (>95%) bite-sized structures that are safe to swallow and capable of encapsulating vitamins B9 and B12 for delayed release in the gastrointestinal tract. Residence time notably affected the beads' microstructure and texture. Reverse-spherified liquid-core beads were soft and stable, maintaining

Complete tracheal transection at the thoracic inlet: successful reconstruction with intraoperative Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) support - case report.

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchial injuries from blunt chest trauma carry high mortality, with complete thoracic inlet tracheal transection being previously undocumented. While Veno-Venous Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (VV-ECMO) has been increasingly recognized as a critical airway support modality in traumatic tracheal reconstruction, current evidence provides no consensus regarding optimal ECMO initiation timing in surgical decision-making. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old male driver sustained front and back chest impacts in a crash. CT scan revealed complete tracheal transection at the tho
