An adlescent girl was bitten on the right middle finger while attempting to intervene in a fight among her three pet guinea pigs. She was initially treated by a local physician without improvement and was subsequently referred to the Department of Dermatology at our hospital. Direct microscopic examination of scales and crusts with KOH was positive, and she was diagnosed with tinea corporis. The isolated fungus was morphologically identified as belonging to the Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex, and topical luliconazole cream was administered. Molecular analysis based on the DNA sequence of

Here we describe the novel, multi-point Comet Interceptor mission. It is dedicated to the exploration of a little-processed long-period comet, possibly entering the inner Solar System for the first time, or to encounter an interstellar object originating at another star. The objectives of the mission are to address the following questions: What are the surface composition, shape, morphology, and structure of the target object? What is the composition of the gas and dust in the coma, its connection to the nucleus, and the nature of its interaction with the solar wind? The mission was proposed t

Human illness associated with tick bites is on the rise in the United States. One root cause is that several human-biting tick species serving as pathogen vectors, including the blacklegged tick and the lone star tick, have expanded their geographic ranges in recent decades, with many areas in the U.S. now harboring multiple species of vector ticks. As currently used, personal tick bite prevention and environmental tick control have not succeeded in stemming the rising tide of humans being bitten by ticks. A national strategy to prevent and control vector-borne diseases provides a blueprint to

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A and D are essential for the proper growth and development of a child. Due to the complex political circumstances in the state of Palestine, research on micronutrient deficiency is scarce.
METHODS: The Palestinian Ministry of Health (MOH) and UNICEF conducted a national cross-sectional survey in 2013 after the implementation of various micronutrient supplementation and fortification programs. Risk factors for levels of vitamin A (n = 1054) and vitamin D (n = 150) were assessed among children aged 6 to 59 months using chi-square tests and logistic regression with each of t

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here, we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August 2025 the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesneo

Malaria is a potentially fatal illness caused by a parasite of the genus Plasmodium that humans get by being bitten by female Anopheles mosquitoes carrying the infection. The incidence of malaria worldwide is disproportionately high in the African continent. Automated systems and cognitive analysis of digitized images of blood smears were used to diagnose Plasmodium malaria. This method is implemented in the Aidos intelligent system, which is easily accessible online. For the study, the database included images of 191 blood smears of patients infected with malaria and 227 images of blood sampl

We present the case of a 9-year-old girl from the Peruvian Andean Region (Ancash), diagnosed with fascioliasis, who was also suffering from severe malnutrition. Initially, she was referred for treatment of skin necrosis caused by cutaneous visceral loxoscelism, but during hospitalisation she developed persistent vomiting and pancreatitis. Magnetic resonance cholangiography showed dilation of the intrahepatic and common bile ducts. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography identified an adult Fasciola spp. specimen. She also expelled adult worms of Ascaris lumbricoides during vomiting. Del

Dioctophymosis is caused by Dioctophyme renale, a nematode that primarily affects the right kidney of domestic and wild mammals. This report describes the antemortem diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of a free-ranging lesser grison (Galictis cuja) infected with the parasite. An adult male weighing 1.85 kg was admitted after being struck by a vehicle and showed signs consistent with traumatic brain injury. During hospitalization, fecal parasitological examination revealed eggs consistent with D. renale, along with other parasitic structures. Urinalysis revealed mild proteinuria,

BACKGROUND: Although numerous studies have investigated the link between tropical cyclones and dengue transmission, this body of research is predominantly ecological. How individual-level factors modify vulnerability to this risk remains understudied. We investigated how socioeconomic status, knowledge, attitudes, practices (KAP), and risk perception modulate post-cyclone vulnerability to inform targeted interventions.
METHODS: We conducted a 1:1 matched case-control study in Guangzhou, Zhongshan, and Foshan cities between September 14 and October 1, 2024, following the Super Typhoon Yagi on

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, air pollution is closely associated with climate change and, in particular, with global warming. In addition to melting of ice and snow, rising sea level, and flooding of coastal areas, global warming is leading to a tropicalization of temperate marine ecosystems. Moreover, the effects of air pollution on airway and lung diseases are well documented as reported by the World Allergy Organization.
METHODS: Scientific literature was searched for studies investigating the effect of the interaction between air pollution and climate change on

INTRODUCTION: The Plasmodium transmission-blocking endosymbiont Microsporidia MB was previously identified in Anopheles gambiae s.l., but its association with the carriage of the genotypes of the L1014F kdr mutation, as well as the ecological factors driving its geographical distribution remain understudied. METHODS: Adult mosquitoes were field-collected using human landing catches (HLCs) across 60 villages in the Covè, Ouinhi, and Zangnanado communes of southern Benin. After morphological identification, a sub-sample of An. gambiae s.l. were molecularly speciated, and genotypied for the L1014

BACKGROUND: Alongshan virus (ALSV) is an emerging tick-borne segmented flavivirus associated with human febrile illness, belonging to Jingmenvirus group in the family Flaviviridae. Ixodes persulcatus (I. persulcatus) has been considered as the competent vector of ALSV in the field studies; however, no experimental study has yet evaluated the vector competence of I. persulcatus in the maintenance and transmission of ALSV.
METHODS: I. persulcatus adult ticks were infected with ALSV via anal pore microinjection. salivary glands (SG), midgut (MG), and ovaries (OV) were collected and subjected to

BACKGROUND: Rabies causes over 59,000 human deaths each year, primarily in endemic regions where surveillance is challenging. We report a prospective observational cohort study evaluating rabies virus (RABV) RNA detection from wound swabs of individuals bitten by dogs as a tool to strengthen surveillance and assess human exposure.
METHODS: We enrolled 100 individuals with unwashed, less than 24 hours-old, WHO-defined category III bite wounds at the Rabies Prevention Center, Indus Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. Swabs were collected from wounds before and after washing. Serum samples were obtaine

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that is almost always fatal but can be prevented; it disproportionately affects areas of Asia and Africa with limited resources. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) failures continue to cause avoidable deaths despite advancements in vaccination techniques. Two rabies deaths in which vaccination was not enough to prevent death are reported in the current study: one in an adult bitten by a wolf and another in a child bitten on the face by a stray dog. Critical shortcomings in comprehensive care, such as improper wound suturing, poor wound management, and a failure to adm

CONTEXT: Rabies is a fatal viral disease transmitted through bites or scratches from infected mammals. After exposure, rabies can be prevented with timely administration of postexposure prophylaxis (PEP). Rabies PEP is expensive for patients and time consuming for both patients and providers. The Rhode Island Department of Health's (RIDOH) centralized rabies control program has sole authority for approving rabies PEP for humans bitten by animals in Rhode Island (RI).
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of RIDOH's unique animal bites control program requiring animal bite reporting and health

In July 1955, a devastating polio epidemic struck Massachusetts only 3 months after the licensing of the Salk vaccine. One of the last major polio epidemics in the United States, it overwhelmed the local health care system. At Massachusetts General Hospital, 2 assistant residents-the equivalent of today's postgraduate year 2 trainees-were assigned to oversee a hastily organized polio ward and a rising second-year medical student was charged with setting up and running an adjoining laboratory. There, they and other residents conducted original patient-oriented research while providing round-the

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), particularly Japanese spotted fever, are an increasing public health concern in Japan. Data on pathogens carried by ticks removed directly from patients and their associated clinical outcomes remain limited. This prospective study investigated pathogen carriage in patient-derived ticks and evaluated the clinical risk of TBDs. Between April and October 2025, ticks were collected from patients presenting with tick bites at two medical institutions in Western Japan. Ticks were morphologically identified and spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) was detected by nested

Borrelia miyamotoi is an emerging human tick-borne pathogen that has been confirmed in multiple tick species, including Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor reticulatus. In 2022–2024, 2263 ticks removed from human skin were collected for research, mainly of two species: I. ricinus (2123) and D. reticulatus (137). Detection of B. miyamotoi was performed by PCR, amplifying a fragment of the p66 and gplQ genes, confirmed by sequencing. In total, the pathogen prevalence in human-derived ticks was 3.0%. Among 63 positive I. ricinus (3.0%), B. miyamotoi was detected in females and nymphs with prevalence 3

Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by different species belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato group, is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. However, its true burden remains difficult to assess, partly due to the diagnostic variability of commercial assays. This study evaluated seroprevalence and seroconversion following tick bite, using four serological assays with distinct antigenic compositions. Participants provided blood samples within three days of the tick bite and three months after to assess seroconversion. We evaluated the seroprevalence, seroconversion, inter-assay va
