Rapid coral bleaching recovery via symbiont transfer from healthy corals.

Coral bleaching, the temperature-induced loss of dinoflagellate symbionts, is a major driver of global coral reef decline. Although corals can regain symbionts through repopulation of residual symbionts or via environmental acquisition, these processes are often too slow to prevent coral mortality. Mechanisms that enable rapid and effective symbiont reintroduction leading to full recovery remain largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate coral bleaching recovery through contact-mediated transfer of symbionts from healthy corals using small coral fragments. We show that symbiont transfer is rapid, o

Metabolic and oxidative stress biomarker responses to enhanced levels of natural radioactivity in three edible bivalve species.

Despite the known contribution of industrially derived natural radioactivity, also known as Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), to animal and human radiation dose via seafood consumption, its ecotoxicological effects on marine organisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the physiological responses of bivalve molluscs to enhanced natural radioactivity have not been studied under controlled conditions. We conducted laboratory exposure experiments on three edible bivalve species, Cresstoderma edule, Mytilus edulis and Magallana gigas, selected for their ecological relevance an

Integrative phylogenetics and geography unveil Quaternary diversification and mitochondrial-nuclear discordance in Odorrana schmackeri sensu lato (Anura, Ranidae): Roles of Qinghai-Tibetan uplift, climate oscillations, and asymmetric gene flow.

Odorrana schmackeri sensu lato, a group of montane stream-dwelling amphibians in southern China, provides an ideal model for deciphering how Cenozoic geological and climatic dynamics drive cryptic diversification. By integrating mitochondrial 12S/16S rRNA sequences from 1,398 samples spanning 107 populations and genome-wide SNP data from 193 individuals across 18 populations, we reconstruct the geographic structure and speciation history of O. schmackeri sensu lato. Our analyses resolved six evolutionarily distinct lineages in O. schmackeri sensu lato, i.e., Odorrana hejiangensis, Odorrana ich

Flatfish intestinal microbiota depend on various host traits, and vary with sediment type and bottom trawling effort.

The intestinal microbiota of fishes support digestion, nutrient uptake and play an important role in the immune system, development and reproduction. Flatfish live in close contact with the seafloor, and are particularly exposed to anthropogenic disturbances such as bottom trawling. Bottom trawling impacts the ecosystem in various ways and recent evidence indicates that the microbial composition and diversity in marine sediments varies with fishing intensity. It is presently unknown whether this trawling signal applies to the seafloor alone or also extends to microbiota of marine holobionts in

Fabrication of bioinspired coral reef-like superhydrophobic coating via interfacial polymerization: Towards all-weather high-viscosity oil remediation and de-icing performance.

Developing materials with integrated photothermal and Joule heating capabilities is essential for achieving efficient all-weather remediation of high-viscosity crude oil and de-icing in harsh environments. Herein, a bioinspired coral-reef structured multifunctional coating (HDTMS@PPy@COF@AC) was fabricated via a biomimetic interfacial polymerization strategy. This composite integrated a covalent organic framework (COF) for efficient thermal conduction, a polypyrrole (PPy) for photothermal and Joule heating conversion, and a hexadecamethyldisiloxane (HDTMS) for superhydrophobicity. The micro-na

Molecular and zooarchaeological identification of 5000 year old whale-bone harpoons in coastal Brazil.

The hunting of large whales has shaped the lifeways of many coastal communities for millennia, yet its origins remain debated, often associated with postglacial cultures in Arctic and subarctic regions dating to approximately 3500-2500 years ago. Here, we present evidence that large baleen whales were likely hunted 5000 years ago by Indigenous groups in southern Brazil. We analysed museum collections of cetacean bones and artefacts from archaeological shellmounds, known as sambaquis, in the region of Babitonga Bay. Zooarchaeological, typological, and molecular analyses of bone remains and arte

Hidden in the dark: complex evolutionary history revealed by genome-wide analyses of cave amphipods.

Subterranean environments provide unique habitats and maintain high biodiversity. However, their underlying evolutionary processes remain poorly understood, and especially complex evolutionary hypotheses have not been tested or documented well. In this study, we investigate the evolutionary origin of spatially isolated groups of the subterranean amphipod Pseudocrangonyx (Crustacea: Amphipoda: Pseudocrangonyctidae) within a single cave (Fusa Cave) in northeastern Japan. To archieve this goal, we conducted phylogenetic and population genetic analyses using mitochondrial and nuclear markers, as w

Tube feet dynamics drive adaptation in sea star locomotion.

Sea stars use hundreds of tube feet on their oral surface to crawl, climb, and navigate complex environments, despite lacking a central brain. While tube foot morphology and function as muscular hydrostats are well described, the mechanisms that coordinate their collective dynamics remain poorly understood. To investigate these dynamics, we employed an optical imaging method based on frustrated total internal reflection (FTIR) to visualize and quantify tube foot adhesive contacts in real time in the species Asterias rubens across individuals spanning a wide size range. Our results reveal an in

The genome assemblies of the Tui chub, Siphateles bicolor, and Arroyo chub, Gila orcuttii.

We present genome assemblies for two cyprinoid fishes, the tui chub (Siphateles bicolor) and the arroyo chub (Gila orcuttii). These fishes are ecologically important representatives of native fish assemblages in the western United States and are both species of conservation concern. The two species hybridize where introductions bring them into contact, with potentially important ecological and evolutionary implications that have not yet been thoroughly examined from a genomic perspective. We present de novo assemblies for both species, representing the first scaffold-level genomes within their

Eicosapentaenoic Acid Improves Porcine Oocyte Cytoplasmic Maturation and Developmental Competence via Antioxidant and Mitochondrial Regulatory Mechanisms.

Oocytes cultured in vitro are exposed to high oxygen tension and lack follicular antioxidants, leading to redox imbalance. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a marine long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, possesses strong antioxidant activity. Here, using pigs as a model, we examined the effects of EPA on oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM) and subsequent developmental competence. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were cultured with EPA, followed by assessment of nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation and embryonic development; transcriptomic and proteomic analyses were conducted to explore underlying mechanis

Mechanism Unraveling the Ice-Inhibition Differences of Inulin with Varied Polymerization Degrees and Its Cryoprotective Effects on Frozen Scallops.

In this work, the ice-inhibiting effects and their underlying mechanisms of inulin with various chain lengths were elucidated through experimental measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. The results suggested that long-chain inulin (HP group) exhibited strong and stable ice-inhibiting effects, with a minimum %MGS (12.18%) and limited ice growth of 36.61% after 100 min of freezing. The extensive contact area of long-chain inulin with water molecules (higher Rg and solvent-accessible surface area (SASA) values) favored their hydrogen-bond formation, which further disrupted the original

Dorsoventral-mediated Shh induction is required for axolotl limb regeneration.

Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) exhibit a remarkable ability to regenerate limbs. Classical experiments have suggested that contact between cells derived from distinct orientations-dorsal, ventral, anterior, and posterior-within the regenerating blastema is necessary for accurate limb pattern formation. However, the molecular basis for this requirement has remained largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that both dorsal and ventral tissues are required for limb formation via induction of Shh expression, which plays a crucial role in limb patterning. Using the accessory limb model, we induced pos

Biodegradation of polyurethane by marine-derived Cladosporium oxysporum SCSIO 81042 under seawater conditions and its enhancement by chitosan nanoparticles as adjuvant.

The accumulation of microplastics in marine environments poses a significant ecological threat. This study reports the isolation and characterization of a marine-derived fungus, Cladosporium oxysporum SCSIO 81042, capable of degrading polyurethane (PU) under seawater conditions. Through tiered screening, the strain was selected based on its superior hydrolysis activity against Impranil® DLN and solid poly(1,4-butylene adipate)-based PU (PBA-PU). The strain demonstrated exceptional adaptability to seawater conditions, with optimal growth at 15-28 °C, ∼3% salinity, and pH 7.5-8.0. Under simulate

Bryostatin enhances CD20 CAR-T therapy efficacy against B-cell lymphoma by overcoming trogocytosis-mediated antigen loss.

INTRODUCTION: Trogocytosis, an active membrane transfer process, impairs the therapeutic efficacy of CAR-T cells by inducing antigen loss from tumor cells. This study investigated whether Bryostatin, a PKC modulator derived from marine organisms, could enhance CD20 CAR-T cell activity by up-regulating the CD20 antigen on tumor cells and promoting T cell activation, differentiation and function. METHODS: CD20 antigen expression and trogocytosis-mediated membrane transfer were assessed by flow cytometry and immunofluorescence following co‑culture of CD20 CAR‑T cells with Raji or BALL‑1 cells. Digging of Proline-Rich Peptides with Thrombin-Inhibitory Activity from Type V Collagen of Shortbill Spearfish (Tetrapturus angustirostris) Skin: A Combined In Vitro and In Silico Study.

Type V collagen is a promising source to derive proline-rich peptides. High content of type V collagen in shortbill spearfish skin was utilized to dig proline-rich peptides with thrombin-inhibitory activity through in vitro and in silico strategies. Among identified peptides, Pro-Gly at 20 mg/mL prolonged fibrin polymerization formation rate by 41.6-fold, comparable to that of heparin. Enzyme kinetics analysis revealed that Pro-Gly inhibited the amidolytic activity of thrombin through a mixed-type inhibition mechanism (IC50 = 0.61 mg/mL). Strong inhibitory effect of Pro-Gly was attributed to t

Chromosome-scale genome assembly and annotation of the water monitor lizard, Varanus salvator.

Species of the genus Varanus exhibit substantial variation in body size, making them an excellent model system for studying evolutionary biology. Their genomes can provide valuable insights into the evolutionary mechanisms underlying body size diversity in vertebrates. Here, we presented a chromosome-level genome assembly for the water monitor lizard (Varanus salvator), generated and annotated through an integrated multi-omics approach. The assembled genome spans 1,645 Mb, with contig and scaffold N50 values of 27.34 Mb and 12.63 Mb, respectively. Approximately 97.4% of the assembled sequences

Two Sporadic Cases of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae Infection, Minnesota 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium that can cause infections in livestock, marine mammals and humans. Human infections are traditionally affiliated with occupational exposures to E. rhusiopathiae through farming, butchering, or cooking. In July 2024, the Minnesota Department of Health was notified of two E. rhusiopathiae infections in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Concerned about a possible outbreak, an investigation was initiated to determine the possible source(s) of infection. METHODS: Epidemiologists conducted reiterative, sem

North Atlantic right whale detection and localisation using deep learning, spectrogram cross-correlation, and nonlinear Bayesian inversion.

We present a processing routine for marine mammal call detection and localisation, using North Atlantic right whale (NARW) upcalls and moans passively recorded by a sonobuoy grid in July 2018 in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. Right whales are critically endangered and at risk from ship strikes and fishing gear entanglement. We demonstrate the effectiveness of passive acoustic monitoring followed by a three-step analysis as a mitigation tool. The first step detects NARW calls using a publicly available deep learning model, trained on open acoustic datasets, adapted and optimised for

Raising and Releasing a Single Orphaned Harbour Seal Pup-A Case Report.

Well-founded animal models of maternal separation show that early postnatal separation from the mother represents a massive stress factor for the offspring, with far-reaching negative effects on their physical and behavioural development. However, studies also show that the effects of maternal separation can be at least mitigated by appropriate physical attention. In this case report, we document the successful rehabilitation of a single orphaned male harbour seal pup by attempting to substitute natural maternal attention with intensive human attention. The pup underwent excellent physical dev

Sex chromosomes and chromosomal rearrangements contribute to behavioral sexual isolation in Jaera albifrons marine isopods.

We focus on the evolution of behavioral sexual isolation through the empirical study of two marine isopod species. The males of Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta engage females in tactile courtship by brushing the female's back, but they do so with divergent sets of specialized setae, and female choice results in strong reproductive isolation. Using RADseq-derived genotypes of individuals from natural populations and controlled crosses, we found that secondary contacts between J. albifrons and J. praehirsuta resulted in different levels of heterospecific gene flow. Comparison of the genomi
