Loss of Major Histocompatibility Complex I and II Function in the Genome of Glacier Lanternfish Provides Insight Into Evolution of Vertebrate Immune Systems.

Lanternfishes (Myctophidae) are one of the most abundant and species diverse orders inhabiting the mesopelagic zone. Exploitation of marine resources has recently attracted increased interest. It is therefore essential to improve our understanding of the meso- and deep-pelagic ecosystems with respect to conservation and management strategies. Genomic resources are paramount to enable in-depth studies of population structuring and understanding the inherent genetic diversity, but also to enable studies of processes such as local adaptation and selection. Here, we present a genome assembly of th

Centimetre-scale landscapes to assess the motion behaviour and cognition of gastropods and bivalves.

Most ectotherms typically navigate topographically complex landscapes to find food and sexual partners while avoiding predation. However, it is still unclear how chemical, visual and contact cues interact and drive the behavioural complexity observed in these organisms. This contribution illustrates how behavioural ecologists could take advantage of the unique modularity, chemical inertness, scalability, simplicity and affordability of LEGO® bricks and parts to create hypothesis-driven landscapes of various levels of complexity to unambiguously assess the behavioural responses of gastropods an

Detection, communication, and individual identification with deep audio embeddings: A case study with North Atlantic right whales.

Anthropogenic noise has increased ambient sound levels across the globe, both underwater and on land. Among its many negative impacts, heightened noise can impair communication in vocal animals through acoustic masking. Conceptually, noise reduces the animal's communication space - the area in which an individual animal can effectively convey information to a conspecific listener. Previous studies have estimated the communication space using sound propagation models and/or behavioral studies. However, studies frequently equate signal recognition with signal detection - a necessary but not suff

Systematic review of microplastic concentrations in water and fish: Modelling distribution patterns and transport dynamics across the Mediterranean Sea.

Microplastics (MPs) are pervasive marine contaminants, yet Mediterranean-scale assessments remain constrained by fragmented spatial coverage, inconsistent metrics, and limited integration between observations and transport processes. Here, we combine a harmonised systematic review of MP concentrations in surface waters and fish with basin-scale Lagrangian particle tracking to resolve distribution patterns, connectivity, and exposure pathways across Mediterranean Geographical Sub-Areas (GSAs). From 591 screened records (2012-2026), 108 empirical studies met strict inclusion criteria. Concentrat

Gekko (Gekko) dam, a new dark-colored tokay gecko from the Thai-Malay border (Squamata, Gekkonidae).

We describe Gekko dam sp. nov. based on type specimens from a limestone hill in Palian District, Trang Province, southern peninsular Thailand. The new species is also found in Satun Province, southern peninsular Thailand, and in Perlis State, northwestern Peninsular Malaysia. A member of the subgenus Gekko, it differs from all currently recognized Gekko species by the following combination of morphological characters and pattern: maximal known snout-vent length of 149.1 mm, lack of contact between nostrils and rostral, 21-24 interorbital scales between supraciliaries, 72-83 scale rows around m

Polymer-cocktail edible aerogel templates for structuring omega-3-rich sardine by-product oil into stable oleogels.

Sardine by-product oil is a sustainable marine lipid resource rich in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), yet its high oxidative susceptibility and poor physical stability limit direct food application. An alginate-carboxymethyl cellulose-chitosan-gelatin matrix was developed to structure PUFA-rich oil through sequential hydrogel-aerogel-oleogel transformation. The chitosan-gelatin ratio was systematically varied to modulate network reinforcement and oil immobilization performance. Freeze-drying generated a hierarchical porous aerogel structure, consisting of interconnected macropo

Roughness-dependent exploration strategies regulate barnacle cyprid settlement on titanium surfaces.

The widespread use of titanium in marine structures is hindered by its susceptibility to biofouling. As a promising antifouling approach, the rational design of direct surface modification relies on a fundamental understanding of how surface properties regulate the settlement of fouling organisms. Herein, this study investigated the effect of TA2 titanium surface roughness on the settlement process of barnacle cyprids. Increased roughness enhanced the temporary attachment of cyprids through sacrificial bonds and mechanical interlocking of deposited footprint proteins. A moderate roughness incr

Mechanistic insights into Kv1.6 inhibition by conotoxin Pl14A from molecular dynamics simulation.

Conotoxins are peptide toxins that are found in marine cone snails and inhibit ion channels with high affinity and selectivity. Pl14A is a conotoxin belonging to the J-superfamily, and is one of a few conotoxins that can inhibit two types of receptors, the Kv1.6 subtype of voltage-gated potassium channels as well as nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). In this work, we use classical molecular dynamics simulations to examine the mechanism of inhibition and structural interactions between Pl14A and the Kv1.6 channel. Our study reveals that Pl14A binds stably in the extracellular vestibule

Host species-driven genetic structure of respiratory mites in two sympatric marine mammal species.

Understanding the factors shaping parasite population structure is key to unravelling host-parasite coevolution and transmission dynamics. Respiratory mites of the genus Orthohalarachne (Acari: Halarachnidae) are obligate parasites infecting the respiratory tract of otariids, yet their population genetics remain largely unexplored. Here, we examined the genetic structure of O. attenuata and O. diminuata infecting two sympatric hosts, the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis; SAFS) and the South American sea lion (Otaria byronia; SASL), across their distribution ranges. Genetic anal

The structures of ecteinascidin anticancer agents bound to DNA shed light on their mechanism of action.

Ecteinascidins constitute a family of alkaloid compounds, originally isolated from marine tunicates, that exhibit strong antitumor activity. They act through binding to the DNA minor groove and forming covalent adducts with guanine residues. However, the limited availability of structural data restricts mechanistic insights into their mode of action and hampers the discovery of novel compounds. We report crystal structures of duplex DNA adducts with first-, second-, and third-generation ecteinascidins. The structures show that trabectedin, lurbinectedin, and PM54 bind through their shared A- a

Knockdown Effects of Pyrethroid and Neonicotinoid-Treated Nets on Rhodnius prolixus.

Kissing bugs (Rhodnius prolixus) are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, posing risks to military personnel and working dogs in endemic regions. This study quantified time-dependent knockdown of R. prolixus on commercial 300-series (80% blockage) netting treated with dinotefuran (neonicotinoid) or esfenvalerate (pyrethroid) under controlled laboratory conditions. Laboratory-reared adult R. prolixus were exposed to 8.2 × 8.2 cm net clippings in modified WHO cone bioassays. Four insects per replicate were exposed for 3, 6, 9, 12, or 15 minutes (five replicates per exposure × treatment; N = 300, includ

Sea Anemone-Inspired Fluorosilicone Polyurethane Coating with Synergistic Low-Surface-Energy and Cationic Antibacterial Action for Static Antifouling.

Conventional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based antifouling coatings, despite their inherent fouling-release capability, exhibit critically insufficient antifouling performance under static seawater conditions. Inspired by the synergistic physical-chemical defense strategy of sessile marine organisms, specifically sea anemones, which combine a physical mucus barrier with antimicrobial peptide secretion, the present work develops a multi-mechanism hybrid coating-designated as sea anemone-inspired fluorosilicone polyurethane-that integrates low-surface-energy physical antifouling and cationic ant

Hidden genomic structure and widespread structural polymorphism across environmental gradients in the spiny sea star Marthasterias glacialis.

Genomic regions of reduced recombination can preserve linkage among co-adapted alleles, facilitating local adaptation despite high connectivity. Such regions-often generated by chromosomal inversions-may be especially important in highly dispersive marine taxa yet remain poorly documented in echinoderms. Here, we combined a chromosome-level reference genome with genome-wide ddRAD-seq from 296 Marthasterias glacialis individuals across 19 Atlantic-Mediterranean locations to quantify population structure and scan for recombination-suppressed haploblocks. Genome-wide neutral markers showed signif

Succinylated nori protein-alginate complex particles prepared using temperature-controlled ultrasonication for the formation of high internal phase Pickering emulsion gels as plant-based fat analogues.

In this study, succinylated nori protein (SNP), sodium alginate (SA), and flaxseed oil were used to develop novel high-internal-phase Pickering emulsion (HIPPE) gels with potential application as plant-based fat analogues. Stable composite particles were successfully fabricated through ultrasonication combined with temperature control. The ultrasonic treatment condition was identified as 450 W for 30 min, under which the Pickering particles exhibited the smallest particle size and superior emulsifying ability. The optimal formulation parameters were identified as an SNP-to-SA ratio of 1:5, an

Antifouling properties of ZnO nanorods coating on micropatterned polymers.

Biofouling remains a major challenge for submerged materials in marine and industrial environments, reducing performance and increasing maintenance costs. In this study, zinc oxide nanorod (ZnO NR) coatings with dual-scale surface roughness were fabricated on three distinct 3D micropatterned surfaces, designated as D1, D2, and D3. The antifouling performance of the engineered surfaces was evaluated against the bacterium Escherichia coli and the diatom Amphora sp. under laboratory flow conditions, while acute toxicity was assessed using larvae of Litopenaeus vannamei. Regional variation in within- and transgenerational responses to an invasive predator.

When confronted with environmental stress, individuals may enhance their fitness by altering their phenotype via within-generation plasticity (WGP) or their offspring's phenotype via transgenerational plasticity (TGP). Despite growing appreciation of TGP in adapting to environmental change, our understanding of how it may vary geographically among populations having different eco-evolutionary histories remains limited. In the Gulf of Maine, the carnivorous snail, Nucella lapillus, must solve the foraging-predation risk trade-off by reducing their vulnerability to invasive predatory green crabs

Integrated toxicological approach to microplastics and nanoplastics in crustaceans.

Microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) have emerged as pervasive contaminants in aquatic ecosystems, with global inputs to the oceans projected to rise from 11 million metric tons in 2016 to 44 million tons by 2060. Originating from single-use plastics, textiles, fishing gear, industrial waste, and other sources, these particles enter water bodies via urban runoff, wastewater effluents, and atmospheric deposition, ultimately accumulating in sediments. Crustaceans, due to their benthic foraging behavior, wide ecological distribution, and trophic relevance, are highly susceptible to MP/NP ex

An adhesive chitosan microneedle patch incorporating a Sargassum-derived polysaccharide for skin repair.

Microneedle patches have emerged as promising tools for wound repair. However, their clinical utility is limited by poor adhesion and insufficient interfacial stability, which often lead to secondary wound separation and inefficient drug delivery. Here, we report a seaweed-derived bioadhesive microneedle patch that integrates robust tissue adhesion with sustained drug release for effective skin regeneration. The hydrogel patch, composed of chitosan and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), absorbs wound exudates and forms mechanically stable adhesion on tissue surfaces. As such, it maintains long-term

Using electrical impedance tomography to estimate tidal volume in bottlenose dolphins and cape fur seals in seawater and on land.

Marine mammals possess specialized respiratory adaptations that enable efficient gas exchange and resilience to extreme pressures during diving, yet direct observation of lung mechanics under pressure has been logistically challenging. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) measures real-time changes in thoracic impedance, and provides continuous, regional maps of pulmonary air distribution. We validated EIT for estimating tidal volume (VT) in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops spp.) and Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) both on land and in water. EIT reliably tracked VT in both taxa, showing

Digest: Chromosomal architecture of behavioral isolation in marine isopods.

How do reproductive barriers persist when diverging species come back into contact? Ribardière et al. (2026) investigated this question in 2 marine isopods, Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta, whose males court females using divergent specialized setae. By combining population genomics and controlled crosses, the authors show that genomic regions resisting interspecific gene flow are concentrated on sex chromosomes and rearranged chromosomes-regions of low recombination that harbor the genetic bases of divergent male courtship traits.
