STUDY OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical and epidemiologic features of Vibrio vulnificus infections.
DESIGN: Case series based on notifiable disease report forms and patient medical records.
SETTING: Cases reported to the Florida Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services from 1981 to 1987.
PATIENTS: Sixty-two patients with V. vulnificus infection.

Previous work suggests that organelles contacting microtubules in axons are in fast transport. Here, we examine the distribution of organelles contacting microtubules in growing axons and growth cones from chick optic tectum. A case of a full skin thickness burn after contact with a Hydrozoa, Millepora dichotoma, is described. The poison secreted by specialized cells on the spines of this marine animal is a strong local irritant. Deep burns due to this agent do not appear to have been described before.

Seventy-four New Zealand Army personnel with a distinctive bullous dermatosis caused by an endemic beetle are described. These are the first reported cases of this condition in New Zealand. The beetle, Thelyphassa lineata (Fabricius) belonging to the family Oedemeridae was shown to be a vesicant species, as skin contact induced blisters in volunteers. This is a previously unrecognised property of this species.

Secondary metabolites from marine bryozoans are reviewed. Two ctenosome bryozoans are dealt with, one, Alcyonidium gelatinosum containing a sulfoxonium ion acting as hapten in an allergic contact dermatitis and the other, Zoobotryon verticillatum yielding bromogramines. Forty-five cases of ciguatera poisoning in Puerto Rico (P.R.) are described. These cases represent all those reported to the P.R. Poison Control Center in 1982. Most of the cases were reported in the spring and summer months. The most common fish ingested was the grouper. The clinical presentation of acute and long term symptoms was similar to that reported in other geographical areas, except the incidence of paresthesias. As man takes increasing advantage of the waters of the world for recreational, commercial and scientific purposes, the hazards of human contact with inhabitants must be appreciated. Many invertebrate and vertebrate animal species have developed natural defense mechanisms, some of which involve envenomation, with a few species posing the threat of serious injury or death. This paper discusses the more common and more serious marine envenomations encountered worldwide, including toxicology of the associated venoms and a discussion of current treatment recommendations.

CRF41 antibodies stained a peptidergic neurone system in the brain of several species of Teleost Fish. Perikarya are localized in the preoptic nucleus.
