The marine telost Pollachius virens undergoes a natural starvation during the winter, and provides a reversible, non-pathological model for studying muscle wasting. In the present study fish were kept without food under laboratory conditions for up to 12 weeks. The effects of starvation on muscle fibre size, volume fractions of mitochondria and myofibrils, and capillary supply were determined. Allograft rejection processes of two taxonomically related sponge species, Polymastia robusta and Polymastia mamillaris, have been studied at the cellular level. Repeated exposure to the marine bryozoan, Alcyonidium gelatinosum, frequently provokes an eczematous allergic contact dermatitis known as the "Dogger Bank Itch". The dermatitis, representing a severe occupational disease, is especially widely distributed among trawlermen working in the Dogger Bank area in the North Sea. The allergy is shown to belong to the type of cell-mediated hypersensitivity. The hapten has been identified as the (2-hydroxyethyl)dimethylsulfoxonium ion. The isolation, structure determination and synthesis are discussed.

The corneal epithelium of a fish is in direct contact with the aquatic environment and is a barrier to movement of ions and water into and through the cornea. This tissue layer is thus important in maintenance of corneal transparency. Triphenyl tin fluoride (TPTF) is a bioactive organo-tin compound used in concentrations 2-12% as anti-foulants in boat paints. The chemical is moderately toxic to the skin. An occupational irritant contact folliculitis from TPTF in a marine paint plant worker is described. Contact allergy was excluded by patch testing. An attempt to reproduce the follicular reaction in man, rabbit and guinea pig was unsuccessful.

From Oct. 30 to Nov. 7, 1979, 10 people in the Sardinian province of Cagliari had onset of bacteriologically confirmed cholera. Two symptom-free excretors of Vibrio cholerae O:1 were detected in household contacts of the patients. There were no deaths. Cutaneous inflammation was induced by debromoaplysiatoxin, a purified toxin extracted from Lyngbya majuscula Gomont. This alga causes a seaweed dermatitis that occurs in persons who have swum off the coast of Oahu in Hawaii. By topical application, the toxin was found to produce an irritant pustular folliculitis in humans and to cause a severe cutaneous inflammatory reaction in the rabbit and in hairless mice.

A bioactive isolate from the blue-green alga Gomphosphaeria aponina is cytolytic towards the dinoflagellate, Gymnodinium breve, Florida's red tide organism. Batch and continuous cultures of G. aponina were used to determine nutrient limitation and to optimize mass-culture conditions. Iron and inorganic carbon were growth limiting; first-order saturation kinetics were observed for both substrates. Bile composition and secretion were studied in tow elasmobranch species, Squalus acanthias (spiny dogfish shark) and Raja erinacea (small skate), after ligation of the common duct and insertion of cannulas into the gallbladder lumen.
