The ultrastructure of Gymnosphaera albida Sassaki, a marine axopodiate protozoon.

Gymnosphaera albida has been found on the sponge Sycon ciliatum in the Menai Straits, North Wales, during the months of May to December. It commonly adopts a sedentary mode of life when cultured, settling with its body in contact with the substratum and its axopodia radiating upwards and outwards all round. At times it floats freely. When sessile it can displace itself, but not by rolling. It is a voracious carnivore. The largest seen had a body size of 510 mum X 320 mum. The body of Gymnosphaera is divided into three zones: a central medulla, a cortex and a superficial reticulated pseudopodia

[Histoenzymologic study of anticholinesterase activity of ciguatoxic extracts of Ceochetus striatus (Gunther) and Plectrompus leopardus].

The use of histo-enzymological techniques for visualizing the cholinesterasic spots on the motory plate is turned to account by the authors to point out the inhibition of the cholinesterasic processes, by some fractions of the ciguatoxins at the level of the neuro-mucular synapsis. The results obtained confirm, on one hand, the efficiency of the method to test the anti-cholinesterasic activity of some fractions of the ciguateric extracts, and, on the other hand, enable the establishment of the fact that even clinically non toxic individuals from fishspecies, dwelling in tropical coral biotops,

Some properties of an established fish cell line from the marine fish, Caranx mate (Omaka).

A monolayer culture of fibroblast-like cells was initiated and established from a trypsin digest of Omaka fish larvae (Caranx mate). The cell culture has been subcultured 105 times over a period of 30 mo and appears to be contact-inhibited. The Omaka cells grew optimally at 27 degrees in Eagle's basal medium plus 10% fetal calf serum but failed to grow at 16 and 37 degrees. At the lower temperature the cells remained viable and began to divide when the temperature was raised to 27 degrees. Unlike certain marine fish cell lines the Omaka cell did not require a higher osmolarity medium for optim

Localization and electrical activity of the distance chemoreceptors that mediate predator avoidance behaviour in Acmaea limatula and Acmaea scutum (gastropoda, prosobranchia).

1. The marine gastropods Acmaea (Collisella) limatula and Acmaea (Notoacmea) scutum respond to distant predatory starfish (i.e. to starfish scent) by moving up a vertical surface. 2. The distance chemoreceptors that mediate this avoidance behaviour are located on the mantle margin. Heat cauterization of the limpets' mantle margin eliminates their responsiveness to Pisaster ochraceus scent, while a similar cauterization of the ctenidium and the osphradia does not diminish the avoidance behaviour. 3. Primary afferent electrical activity can be recorded from the chemoreceptors on the mantle margi

Medical hazards of the coral reef.

An account is given of some aspects of poisonings sustained by coming into contact with animals of the coral reefs of the Fiji Islands. Poisonings can be grouped into those in which the toxin is introduced parenterally-envenomings, and those in which it is ingested. Illustrative case histories are presented of injuries from 2 echinoderms and of envenoming from the "deadly" stonefish. A therapeutic approach to puffer-fish poisoning is mentioned and the problem of ciguatera poisoning is outlined.

Swimming sea anemones of Puget Sound: swimming of Actinostola new species in response to Stomphia coccinea.

Swimming as a response of the sea anemone Actinostola new species can be elicited as a result of contact with the submarginal surface of another swimming sea anemone Stomphia coccinea. However, Stomphia does not swim as a result of contact with Actinostola. In all other known respects, swimming is caused in both species by the same stimuli, including certain starfishes, a nudibranch, and electrical stimuli. No agent that causes Actinostola to swim has been detected in extracts, rubbings, or dried matter from Stomphia.

SOME PROPERTIES OF PROTOPLASMIC GELS : I. TENSION IN THE CHLOROPLAST OF SPIROGYRA.

The chloroplast of Spirogyra is a long, spirally coiled ribbon which may contract to form a short, nearly straight rod. This happens under natural conditions and it can also be produced by a variety of inorganic salts and by some organic substances. It also occurs when the chloroplast is freed by centrifugal force from the clear peripheral protoplasm which is in contact with the cellulose wall. It would therefore seem that the chloroplast may be passively stretched by the action of the clear protoplasm and hence it contracts as soon as it is set free. This contraction happens in dead as well a
