Rabies and rabies prophylaxis in Egypt: a nationwide cross-sectional study that calls for action.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease that poses a global health threat, especially in developing countries. Despite the high incidence of animal bites reported annually in Egypt, limited data exist regarding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the general population toward rabies and rabies prophylaxis. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using a structured interview-based survey targeting individuals aged 18 years or older who attended outpatient clinics at nine university hospitals across Egypt. The survey assessed participants' KAP t

Delay in initiation of rabies post-exposure vaccination and influencing factors in Gondar zones of Ethiopia.

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease of warm-blooded animals, which is preventable through proper administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). In controlling rabies, delays in initiating post exposure vaccination (PEV) are a challenge in endemic regions. A study was conducted to assess the delay in initiation of PEV and identify associated factors in Ethiopia. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews from 260 dog bite victims or their guardians between January and June, 2025 using a questionnaire. Post exposure vaccination was considered delayed if it was initiated after 48 hours of t

Borrelia miyamotoi exceeds Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in human exposure despite the opposite in ticks: an integrated serological, entomological and molecular study in southeastern Kazakhstan.

Lyme borreliosis (LB) and hard tick-borne relapsing fever caused by Borrelia miyamotoi are emerging tick-borne infections, yet in Kazakhstan routine LB diagnosis relies on single-tier enzyme immunoassay (EIA) without confirmatory testing, and B. miyamotoi is absent from national diagnostic protocols. In 2024-2026, 1300 participants were enrolled in the Ixodes persulcatus-endemic Almaty and Jetisu regions and the non-endemic Zhambyl and Turkistan regions, across diverse clinical and tick-exposure groups. All sera were screened for IgM and IgG to both pathogens by multi-antigen protein arrays, w

One Health genomic surveillance of ticks found on community-dwelling non-human 'farm' animals to identify microbes associated with tick borne illnesses in Eastern Ontario.

Companion animals, such as dogs and cats, and wildlife are recognized as sentinel species in One Health surveillance due to periodic exposure to ticks and infection by tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). Surveillance of this type is a strategy that captures a broad range of genetic, immunological, and behavioral factors that affect tick and disease dynamics. In contrast, non-human animals (hereafter referred to as 'animals') that are traditionally farmed for their meat and other products have been largely overlooked as sentinel species. Community-dwelling farm sanctuary residents, such as cattle, pig

A case of seal bite injury.

In Japan, seal habitats are limited, and no medical cases of seal bites have been reported. Therefore, we report a case of a seal bite. A 22-year-old female aquarium employee was bitten by a seal that reacted to a dog that was barking during feeding. She washed the wound at the scene for approximately 10 min before presenting to the hospital. A bite wound with tooth marks extending from the back of the right hand to the wrist and partially penetrating the subcutaneous tissue was observed. The wound was cleaned and disinfected, and the bite site was left open. Tetanus toxoid and amoxicillin/cla

Chemosensory protein BmCSP4 enhances silkworm adaptation to mulberry by suppressing plant defense responses.

The silkworm (Bombyx mori) feeds exclusively on mulberry leaves; however, the genetic basis underlying its adaptation to mulberry defenses remains unclear. In this study, we identified a silkworm chemosensory protein (CSP), BmCSP4, which is highly expressed in the salivary glands of larvae and secreted onto mulberry leaf wounds during feeding. Biochemical and molecular docking assays revealed that BmCSP4 binds to various mulberry volatiles, particularly cis-3-hexenyl acetate, cis-jasmone, and trans-3-hexen-1-ol. Mulberry leaves chewed by silkworms with exogenous BmCSP4 application or transgeni

Human 3D liver spheroids support productive infection of a novel tick-borne phenuivirus.

The identification of novel tick-borne viruses, such as Mukawa virus (MKWV), underscores a growing need to assess their potential public health risks. In this study, we isolated the MKWV strain HLJ1 from Ixodes persulcatus ticks. While this initial isolate demonstrated limited replication in mammalian cell lines and mice, it productively infected human primary cell-derived 3D spheroids. Serial passaging in this model significantly enhanced viral titers, suggesting adaptive evolution. The resulting adapted strain exhibited increased virulence, causing pronounced cytopathic effects in Vero cells

A Community Engagement Approach to Snakebite Prevention in Rural Uganda: Exploring Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices.

Snakebite envenoming is classified as a Neglected Tropical Disease and causes mortality, morbidity, and economic impacts for hundreds of thousands of people per year, particularly in tropical, low- and middle-income countries. Most research on snakebite interventions focuses on improving clinical management rather than bite prevention. However, prevention may provide a better mechanism to minimise snakebite impacts, particularly in rural areas where access to effective medical treatment is limited. This study reports on the preliminary testing phase of a participatory workshop intervention run

RAB-35 regulates distinct steps of trogocytosis in the biting and bitten cell.

Trogocytosis is a form of cellular cannibalism in which a cell "bites" off pieces of another cell. Here, we investigate the molecular mechanisms of a developmentally programmed C. elegans trogocytic event that occurs when endodermal cells bite off and digest pieces of primordial germ cells (PGCs) called lobes. Through a genetic screen, we identify the Rab family small GTPase rab-35 as a central regulator of trogocytosis and show that its function is required in both biting (endodermal) and bitten (PGC) cells. Within endodermal cells, RAB-35 enriches around trogocytosed PGC lobes, promotes the

Western Bush Viper (Atheris chlorechis) Envenomation: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Western bush viper (Atheris chlorechis) envenomation is rarely encountered worldwide and has been reported only very rarely in the United States (U.S.). Although there is no antivenom (AV) specific to Atheris species, polyvalent AVs are used to treat closely related species. We discuss the case of a 49-year-old female exotic snake breeder in the U.S. who was bitten on her left thumb by a Western bush viper. CASE REPORT: The patient was initially evaluated at a community hospital emergency department before being transported to a tertiary care center for both AV administration and

Thermal imaging: A potential tool for early detection of tail lesions in pigs?

Tail biting in pigs is a serious problem both from an animal welfare and an economic perspective. Once the behaviour starts, it is important to identify it and intervene immediately to restrict the spread and risk of secondary problems, such as infections. In this study, we tested whether thermal camera imaging could be used as an aid for early detection of tail biting. We also assessed links between skin temperature, tail health and saliva biomarkers for stress and inflammation. Bitten tails were slightly warmer based on thermal imaging than non-lesioned tails. However, the difference was not

Consultations in general practice related to a tick bite episode in mainland France in 2023-2024.

BACKGROUND: The emergence and spread of TBDs present major challenges. Exposure to tick bites in mainland France is mainly documented through local studies or citizen science projects. According to the 2024 French national survey, about 15% bitten individuals consult a healthcare professional. National-level data from general practice are needed to better describe tick bite epidemiology. MAIN OBJECTIVE: To estimate the incidence of patients consulting general practitioners (GPs) for a tick bite and to describe their characteristics, their management and the context of the bite. METHOD: We co

Unexpectedly aggressive human-biting behaviour of Hippobosca equina Linnaeus (Diptera: Hippoboscidae).

We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra

Social network analysis of tail-biting interactions among growing-finishing pigs with intact tails housed in two group sizes.

Tail biting compromises the welfare and performance of pigs. Understanding the dynamics of this behavior is essential for developing management strategies to minimize outbreaks. We used social network analysis (SNA) to evaluate the effect of group size on tail-biting interactions among pigs and to examine differences in tail-biting network position between barrows and gilts and biters and non-biters. Pigs (n = 315, initial weight = 22.1 ± 3.76 kg) with intact tails of mixed sexes were housed in small (9 pigs/pen) or large (18 pigs/pen) pens on slatted floors for 14 wk until market weight (120.

Live triatomine bug, vector of Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease), found engorged in Lisbon hotel room: A first for Portugal and for Europe.

Triatomine bugs are blood feeding insects that transmit the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease. The bugs are found primarily in the Americas with a few species in Asia and Africa. Here we report the first case of a live triatomine bug in Europe, found in a Lisbon hotel room. In August, 2025, the hotel room occupants discovered a triatomine bug perched on the headboard of their bed. Upon capture, bright red blood emerged from the bug; the occupants suspected that it had bitten them during the night. The bug was identified morphologically as triatomine species Hospesne
