BACKGROUND: Management of hypopharynx cancer is often extrapolated from larynx cancer. This report analyses treatment patterns and survival limited to hypopharynx cancer using the National Cancer Database (NCDB).
METHODS: There are 9314 patients diagnosed with hypopharynx cancer between 2004 and 2016. The association between treatment modality and survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival curves and multivariable Cox regression.
RESULTS: Five-year overall survival ranged from 45% for stage I to 21% for stage IVB. Treatment modality did not influence survival in stage I/II. For stage

BACKGROUND: Pyriform sinus carcinoma with vocal cord fixation is stratified as stage T3 and above, and non-surgical treatment is generally preferred according to the guidelines, aiming to preserve laryngeal function. However, long-term survival is often compromised by deep infiltration of the tumor. Vertical hemipharyngolaryngectomy (VHPL) was previously reported to be a feasible surgical approach for organ preservation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional and oncological outcomes of VHPL in patients.
METHODS: Patients who underwent VHPL type II (total VHPL, which includes th

BACKGROUND: Distant Metastases from Head and Neck Squamous cell carcinomas are uncommon (9-11%) and they are usually found in the lung and less frequently in the liver, kidney and adrenals. Central nervous system (CNS) metastases are extremely rare (2-8%), and they are described mainly in patients who already have extracranial metastases. So there's scarcity of data about their optimal management .
METHODS AND RESULTS: A patient presented CNS metastases after having been successfully treated with induction chemotherapy and definitive radiotherapy for a pyriform sinus carcinoma. The patient's

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a benign epithelial tumor of the sinonasal cavity that is locally aggressive and has a propensity for recurrence. Tumors involving the anterior maxillary sinus can be challenging to reach endoscopically, and have historically been approached through a Caldwell-Luc or canine fossa trephination. We present a case series of 22 patients with maxillary IPs originating from the anterior wall, which were successfully resected using a modified endoscopic Denker (MED) procedure. This technique enables access to the entire maxillary sinus without the need for a sep

INTRODUCTION: Hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is rare, but highly aggressive. Due to the advanced stage of this cancer at the time of diagnosis, radical surgery with reconstruction of pharynx is the standard care with high morbidity and mortality rate. A safer partial pharyngectomy could also be used for invasive hypopharyngeal cancer. In this study, we investigated the short and long-term outcomes in patients with SCC of the pyriform sinus apex undergoing standard partial pharyngectomy using a new suturing technique, called end to side technique.
METHODS: This case series was pe

PURPOSE: Early persistent/recurrent hypopharyngeal tumours represent a challenge for surgeons who have to balance the need for oncological radicality and the desire to maintain a functioning larynx with preservation of the patient's quality of life. The aim of this study was primarily to understand the technical feasibility, functional outcomes, and the possibility of obtaining oncological radicality using lateral hypopharyngectomy with laryngeal preservation in early recurrent post-radio/(chemo)therapy hypopharyngeal tumours.
METHODS: Patients with recurrent T1 hypopharyngeal squamous cell c

PURPOSE: Apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) derived from diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and metabolic parameters derived from 18F-FDG positron emission tomography (PET) are promising prognostic indicators for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). However, the relationship between them remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between ADCs and metabolic parameters in hypopharyngeal SCC (HSCC) using integrated PET/MRI.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven patients with biopsy-proven HSCC underwent integrated 18F-FDG neck PET/MRI. ADCs of

Ectopic parathyroid adenomas are a common cause of postsurgical persistent primary hyperparathyroidism. Our case highlights a patient with a negative bilateral 4-gland exploration with follow-up parathyroid 4-dimensional CT and Tc-MIBI SPECT/CT, yielding focal uptake in the right piriform sinus. Subsequent direct laryngoscopy revealed a mass in the piriform sinus, which was resected with surgical pathology yielding parathyroid adenoma.

OBJECTIVE: To date, no cases have been reported on the effects of COVID-19 in laryngectomees.
CASE PRESENTATION: We herein presented two clinical cases of laryngectomized patients affected by COVID-19, detailing their clinical course and complications.
DISCUSSION: In our experience, permanent tracheostomy did not significantly affect the choice of treatment. However, dedicated devices and repeated tracheal toilettes may be needed to deal with oxygen-therapy-related tracheal crusting.
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, laryngectomees should be considered a vulnerable population that may be at risk f
