Postmortem submersion interval prediction model based on the rat muscle microbiome.

OBJECTIVE: Accurate estimation of post-mortem submersion interval (PMSI) is a critical challenge in forensic science. The current research has largely focused on the microbial communities in the skin and gut, which are susceptible to environmental contamination, while the potential of internal tissues remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate whether the microbiome of skeletal muscle, a relatively closed ecosystem, undergoes a predictable succession following submersion in water PMSI and to evaluate its potential for building a high-precision PMSI prediction model, which is indepe

Trends in Unintentional Drowning Mortality Among U.S. Adults Aged ≥25 Years, 1999-2024: A U.S. Surveillance Analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Drowning is a leading preventable cause of unintentional injury death, yet U.S. prevention efforts have largely focused on children. Despite international declines in pediatric drowning mortality, adult trends remain poorly characterized. We examined long-term trends and disparities in unintentional drowning mortality among U.S. adults aged ≥25 years from 1999 to 2024. METHODS: Using CDC WONDER Multiple Cause of Death data, drowning deaths were identified using ICD-10 codes W65-W74, V90, and V92. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) per 100,000 were computed by direct s

Diapausing bumble bee queens avoid drowning by using underwater respiration, anaerobic metabolism and profound metabolic depression.

Overwintering bumble bee queens enter a state of diapause, remaining buried underground until spring. Remarkably, queens of the common eastern bumble bee (Bombus impatiens) can survive complete submersion for at least one week. We investigated the physiological mechanisms enabling this tolerance, testing the hypothesis that submerged diapausing queens rely on both underwater respiration and anaerobic metabolism for survival. Using respirometry, we detected low but consistent CO2 production during submersion, persisting through 4 and 8 days under water. Underwater gas exchange, measured from CO

Pediatric near-drownings: clinical insights and prediction of life-threatening events.

INTRODUCTION: Drowning is a leading cause of mortality in children worldwide. Near-drowning is a state of survival after asphyxia due to submersion in water. Drowning-related incidents have significantly increased in developed countries. Even survivors suffer from various long-lasting morbidities. Early prediction of mortality and morbidly life-threatening events is life-saving and guides decision-making in such critical situations. This study aimed to identify early predictors of mortality and other unfavorable outcomes (hypoxic brain injury and respiratory failure necessitating mechanical ve

Machine learning and metabolic signatures of drowning: A pathway to uncovering cause of death in aquatic environments.

The postmortem diagnosis of drowning is challenging due to the nonspecific and transient nature of classical autopsy findings. This study aimed to investigate whether postmortem metabolomics can differentiate drowning from other causes of death, offering a potential biochemical tool to support forensic diagnosis in water-related deaths. A total of 503 drowning cases and four control groups were included, matched on sex, age, BMI, and postmortem interval. Three control groups represented alternative causes of death relevant to bodies found in water; chronic heart disease (n = 510), intoxication

A preliminary study on estimation of postmortem submersion interval of rat cadavers in freshwater through polyamine analysis in tissues.

The estimation of postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) has always been an important scientific issue to be addressed in drowning cases. Traditional methods, such as corpse temperature analysis and the assessment of corpse surface corruption, have limitations and cannot meet the need for accurate estimation of the time of death in the mid to late stages. Biogenic amines, as small molecules produced by protein degradation after death, have a certain regularity in relation to PMSI. To further explore the possibility of utilizing polyamines to estimate PMSI, this experiment constructed a rat cada

Microbial community profiling for forensic drowning diagnosis across locations and submersion times.

BACKGROUND: Drowning diagnosis has long been a critical issue in forensic research, influenced by various factors such as the environment and decomposition time. While traditional methods such as diatom analysis have limitations in decomposed remains, microbial community profiling offers a promising alternative. With the advancement of high-throughput sequencing technology, forensic microbiology has become a prominent focus in the field, providing new research avenues for drowning diagnosis. During drowning, microbial communities enter the lung tissue along with the water. METHODS: In this st

Negative prior aquatic experiences and children's aquatic competency: Do parent perceptions differ from reality?

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Achieving aquatic competence is recommended for preventing childhood drownings, yet many children in Victoria, Australia do not meet aquatic benchmarks despite participating in swimming and water safety programs. While few studies have explored factors influencing aquatic competency development, negative prior aquatic experiences (NPAE) have surfaced as a potential influence. Research on children's NPAE has primarily focused on parental perceptions rather than the child's actual experiences. METHODS: Parents and children (aged 10-12 years) completed reliable surveys for backg

Integrating microbial profiling and machine learning for inference of drowning sites: a forensic investigation in the Northwest River.

Drowning incidents present significant challenges for forensic investigators in determining the exact site of occurrence. Traditional forensic methods often rely on physical evidence and circumstantial clues, but the emerging field of forensic microbiology offers a promising avenue for enhancing precision and reliability in site inference. Our study investigates the application of microbiome analysis in inferring drowning sites, focusing on microbial diversity in water samples and lung tissues of drowned animals from different sites in the Northwest River. We utilized 16S rDNA sequencing to an

Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema in a Member Participating in a Special Tactics Selection Course.

BACKGROUND: Swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE), also called immersion pulmonary edema, is a form of exertional pulmonary edema associated with swimming and/or water immersion without aspiration. Most case reports on SIPE feature young, healthy patients who were scuba-diving, surface swimming, snorkeling, or breath-hold diving before experiencing symptoms of dyspnea, chest pain/tightness, cough, and hemoptysis. The incidence of SIPE is thought to be between 0.4-5%. Although symptoms typically resolve with oxygenation and ventilation, SIPE can be fatal, making recognition of SIPE crucial, e

Aphids increase their rate of survival on emergent aquatic plants through niche construction.

Flooding or rain is a threat to many insects in nature, including herbivorous invertebrates whose hosts are emergent aquatic plants. They may thus have developed particular adaptations to withstand the flooding that is a feature of emergent plants' environment. The aphid Hyalopterus pruni (Hemiptera: Aphididae) modifies the physical and chemical conditions of its habitat by periodically spreading wax around itself with its hind legs. This behaviour constitutes a form of niche construction. We hypothesized that the aphid decreases its risk of death of own or around other individuals when submer

Swimming-Induced Pulmonary Edema Masquerading as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: A Case Report.

Immersion pulmonary edema, also known as swimming-induced pulmonary edema (SIPE), manifests with cough, dyspnea, hemoptysis, and hypoxemia from flash pulmonary edema after surface swimming, often in healthy young individuals with no predisposing conditions. SIPE commonly resolves spontaneously within 24-48 hours but can be fatal. Post-mortem findings demonstrate heavy, edematous lungs and frothy airways. Although these pathologic findings are like those seen in patients with drowning, SIPE, by definition, is associated with pulmonary edema that develops with a closed glottis without drowning/a

'I actually thought that I was going to die': Lessons on the rip current hazard from survivor experiences.

BACKGROUND: Rip currents are strong, narrow, fast-flowing currents of water that occur on many beaches and in Australia contributing to 26 drowning deaths and several thousand lifeguard/lifesaver rescues each year. Educating the public about the rip current hazard is a primary focus of beach safety practitioners, but there has been a lack of qualitative research exploring the firsthand experiences of being caught in a rip current to assist in this regard. The aim of this study was to analyse interviews of rip current survivors to understand more about how people react when unintentionally caug
