PROBLEM: In the U.S., sudden unexpected infant deaths due to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed are increasing. Though breastfeeding is a protective factor against sudden unexpected infant death, motivations to breastfeed often couple with unsafe infant sleep practices. Racial/ethnic disparities are present in sudden unexpected infant death, accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed, and breastfeeding.
BACKGROUND: Promoting infant safe sleep and breastfeeding through community-level initiatives could address disparities in related outcomes.
AIM: Investigate the relationshi

BACKGROUND: Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) remains a leading cause of infant mortality; therefore, understanding parental practices of infant sleep at home is essential. Since social media analyses yield invaluable patient perspectives, understanding sleep practices in the context of safe sleep recommendations via a Facebook mothers' group is instrumental for policy makers, health care providers, and researchers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify photos shared by mothers discussing SUID and safe sleep online and assess their consistency with infant sleep guidelines per the Americ

IMPORTANCE: Rates of maternal obesity are increasing in the US. Although obesity is a well-documented risk factor for numerous poor pregnancy outcomes, it is not currently a recognized risk factor for sudden unexpected infant death (SUID).
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether maternal obesity is a risk factor for SUID and the proportion of SUID cases attributable to maternal obesity.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a US nationwide cohort study using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Center for Health Statistics linked birth-infant death records for birth cohorts in 2

IMPORTANCE: Infection has been postulated as a driver in the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) cascade. Epidemiologic patterns of infection, including respiratory syncytial virus and influenza, were altered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Comparing month-to-month variation in both sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and SIDS rates before and during the pandemic offers an opportunity to generate and expand existing hypotheses regarding seasonal infections and SUID and SIDS.
OBJECTIVE: To compare prepandemic and intrapandemic rates of SUID and SIDS, assessing for monthly variation.

BACKGROUND: Accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed continues to be a critical issue in Black communities, despite the widespread initiatives to promote safe sleep. Doulas are in an ideal position to promote safe sleep, particularly in hard-to-reach communities that are more distrusting of conventional medical providers. Little is known about their practices and perspectives for putting infants down to rest. This study informs this gap in the literature.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore doulas' perspectives and practices in the field of putting infants down to sleep.

BACKGROUND: Mandatory joint police and healthcare investigations of sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) have been in place since 2008 in England. These include death scene examination with cause of death determined at multiprofessional case conference. Detailed evidence on sleep arrangements is available for most cases potentially leading to more being identified as due to accidental suffocation. SUDI remaining unexplained following investigation are classified as SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) or unspecified deaths. Our objective was to determine whether detailed SUDI investigation

BACKGROUND: In the U.S., sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) due to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB) are increasing, with disparities by race/ethnicity. While breastfeeding is a protective factor against infant mortality, racial/ethnic disparities are present in its uptake, and motivations to breastfeed are also often coupled with non-recommended infant sleep practices that are associated with infant sleep deaths. Combining infant safe sleep (ISS) and breastfeeding promotion on the community level presents opportunities to address racial/ethnic disparities and associat

OBJECTIVE: Although the US infant mortality rate reached a record low in 2020, the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) rate increased from 2019. To understand if the increase was related to changing death certification practices or the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, we examined sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) rates as a group, by cause, and by race and ethnicity.
METHODS: We estimated SUID rates during 2015 to 2020 using US period-linked birth and death data. SUID included SIDS, unknown cause, and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. We examined changes in rat

Each year in the United States, ∼3500 infants die of sleep-related infant deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) (International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision [ICD-10] R95), ill-defined deaths (ICD-10 R99), and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ICD-10 W75). After a substantial decline in sleep-related deaths in the 1990s, the overall death rate attributable to sleep-related infant deaths has remained stagnant since 2000, and disparities persist. OBJECTIVE: Higher mortality among full-term infants (term infant deaths) contributes to disparities in infant mortality between the United States and other developed countries. We examined differences in the causes of term infant deaths across county poverty levels and urban-rural classification to understand underlying mechanisms through which these factors may act.
METHODS: We linked period birth/infant death files for 2012-2015 with US Census poverty estimates and county urban-rural classifications. We grouped the causes of term infant deaths as sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI), c

Of the nearly 3.8 million infants born in the United States in 2018, 8.3% had low birth weight (<2500 g [5.5 lb]) and 10% were born preterm (gestational age of <37 completed weeks). Many of these infants and others with congenital anomalies, perinatally acquired infections, and other disease require admission to a NICU. In the past decade, admission rates to NICUs have been increasing; it is estimated that between 10% and 15% of infants will spend time in a NICU, representing approximately 500 000 neonates annually. Approximately 3600 infants die annually in the United States from sleep-relate

OBJECTIVES: To assess the geographic variation of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) and test if variation in geographic factors, such as state, latitude, and longitude, play a role in SUID risk across the US.
STUDY DESIGN: We analyzed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Cohort Linked Birth/Infant Death dataset (2005-2010; 22 882 SUID cases, 25 305 837 live births, rate 0.90/1000). SUID was defined as infant deaths (ages 7-364 days) that included sudden infant death syndrome, ill-defined and unknown cause of mortality, and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. SUID

BACKGROUND: Unintentional suffocation is the leading cause of injury death among infants <1 year old in the United States, with 82% being attributable to accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed. Understanding the circumstances surrounding these deaths may inform prevention strategies.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the population-based Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry from 2011 to 2014. Cases categorized as explained suffocation with unsafe sleep factors (suffocation), per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry classif

This report details the proceedings and conclusions from the 3rd International Congress on Unexplained Deaths in Infants and Children, held November 26-27, 2018 at the Radcliffe Institute at Harvard University. The Congress was motivated by the increasing rejection of the diagnosis Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in the medical examiner community, leading to falsely depressed reported SIDS rates and undermining the validity and reliability of the diagnosis, which remains a leading cause of infant and child mortality. We describe the diagnostic shift away from SIDS and the practical issues

OBJECTIVES: In most recent studies, authors combine all cases of sudden infant death syndrome, other deaths from ill-defined or unknown causes, and accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed as a single population to analyze sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). Our aim with this study is to determine if there are statistically different subcategories of SUID that are based on the age of death of an infant.
METHODS: In this retrospective, cross-sectional analysis, we analyzed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Birth Cohort Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Set (2003-2013: 41 12

OBJECTIVE: Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths (SUID) is defined as a combination of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Unknown Cause of Death (UCD) and Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed (ASSB). Overall rates from 2000 to 2015 have been trending down. Racial differences in occurrence are seen.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Using the CDC Wonder Database, the total rates of SUID and its subsets were examined.
RESULTS: Non-Caucasian infant death rates for the total SUID group, and the SIDS component, are trending downward significantly faster than for Caucasians. UCD trends in rates sho
