Suicide by ligature strangulation and/or hanging inside a motor vehicle: a comprehensive review.

Suicide by ligature strangulation/hanging inside vehicles is uncommon, and only few cases have been reported in the literature. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive review of reported cases of suicide by ligature strangulation/hanging inside vehicles, analyzing the features of the death scene, of the ligature and furrow, autopsy findings, and causes of death. The comprehensive review was performed following the PRISMA guidelines by using the most common scientific databases. According to inclusion criteria, a total of 20 cases of vehicle-assisted strangulation/hanging were reviewed: 13

A Case of Accidental Autoerotic Death by Hanging Linked to Erotic Photography.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Autoerotic death, as a subtype of mechanical asphyxia, refers to a person's fatal outcome while engaging in solitary sexual activity using various devices and methods to reduce oxygen supply and induce cerebral hypoxia, leading to increased sexual gratification. These asphyxial deaths are accidental and sporadic. In cases of sexual asphyxia, especially when strangulation methods such as hanging or ligature are used, thorough crime scene investigation is crucial to determine the type of asphyxia and the manner of death. Inadequate information about specific crime scene findings can lead to sign

A Clue on the Skin: A Systematic Review on Immunohistochemical Analyses of the Ligature Mark.

BACKGROUND: A ligature mark is a common injury in cases of hanging or strangulation. Estimation of age and vitality of the ligature mark can be crucial for differentiating antemortem and postmortem wounds and to distinguish between simulated suicidal hanging or accidental strangulation to conceal a crime and not simulated events. The immunohistochemistry has been recommended by several Authors as a reliable tool to determine whether an injury was sustained during life or not. Unfortunately, no general agreement on the immunohistochemical markers to be used has been found among the scientific c

Muscular Hemorrhages Around the Scapula Provide Insight on the Manner of Asphyxia: A Preliminary Study.

Muscular hemorrhages around the scapula that are caused by upper extremity motion are rarely reported in cases other than drowning. We examined differences in the frequency of muscular hemorrhages around the scapula and stratified them by the cause of death. Muscular hemorrhages were mostly noted in cases of drowning (118/185, 63.8%), followed by cases of asphyxia (23/44, 52.3%). In addition, muscular hemorrhages around the scapula were found in cases of ligature strangulation (8/11, 72.7%), manual strangulation (2/3, 66.7%), choking (11/14, 78.6%), and traumatic asphyxia (2/2, 100%). Fatal strangulation during consensual BDSM activity: three case reports.

Autoerotic accidents are well-known occurrences in forensic casework. Reports about unintentional deaths in a sexual context involving other persons are much rarer. Three cases of fatal incidents related to asphyxiophilia during consensual BDSM activity are reported. Two men died while visiting a dominatrix, the third one in the presence of a male casual sexual partner. Paraphernalia associated with BDSM/fetishism were found at the scene in all cases. Autopsy findings were compatible with death by strangulation. The cases are compared with published autoerotic accidents and similar unintention

The relationship between the intramuscular bleeding of the tongue and cause of death.

Intramuscular bleeding of the tongue (ImBT) is occasionally found during post mortem examination. Despite its frequent reports, its cause has not yet been clarified. In this study, forensic autopsy data of 799 cadavers were examined and the relationship between ImBT and cause of death was investigated. A total of 74 cases showed ImBT (16 of 66 cases of fire fatality, 17 of 108 cases of drowning, 23 of 74 cases of asphyxiation, and 18 of 551 cases of other causes of death). The frequency of bleeding was significantly greater in cases with causes of death including fire fatality, drowning, and a

Nondrowning Asphyxia in Veterinary Forensic Pathology: Suffocation, Strangulation, and Mechanical Asphyxia.

Asphyxia in a forensic context refers to death by rapid cerebral anoxia or hypoxia due to accidental or nonaccidental injury. Death due to nondrowning asphyxia can occur with strangulation, suffocation, and mechanical asphyxia, each of which is categorized based on the mechanism of injury. Individuals dying due to various types of asphyxia may or may not have lesions, and even those lesions that are present may be due to other causes. The interpretation or opinion that death was due to asphyxia requires definitive and compelling evidence from the postmortem examination, death scene, and/or his

Accidental deaths by hanging among children in Istanbul, Turkey: retrospective analysis of medicolegal autopsies in 33 years.

Hanging is a type of strangulation by means of rope or any other similar material. This kind of ligature strangulation occurs by weight of the body dragging due to gravity and applying force to the neck. Hanging almost never occurs by accident, but occurs mostly as a way to commit suicide.A total number of 82,871 autopsies were performed in the Council of Forensic Medicine of the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Justice (Istanbul) between 1979 and 2012, and 4500 (5.43%) of these deaths occurred as a result of hanging. Thirteen of these reported cases have been observed and resulted in death occu

Death as a result of violent asphyxia in autopsy reports.

Violent asphyxia can be subdivided into various kinds according to the mechanism, so that the resuscitation techniques are different in each case. The purpose of the present article was to analyze the autopsy reports of the Department of Forensic Medicine of the Medical University in Wroclaw, Poland of 2010, in which the established cause of death was violent asphyxia. We found that among the 890 autopsies performed, there were 164 cases of death due to violent asphyxia caused by drowning, choking on food, gastric fluid, or blood, hanging, manual strangulations, immobilization of the chest (po

[Development of forensic thanatology through the prism of analysis of postmortem protocols collected at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Jagiellonian University].

When assessed based on the analysis of postmortem protocols, the successes of forensic thanatology appear to differ from those that might be assumed using as the foundation a review of publications and textbooks. The greatest achievements date back to as early as the 18th and 19th centuries, when the morphological changes observed in the majority of types of deaths resulting from disease-associated and traumatic causes were described. Within the past 130 years, however, or in other words, in the period when autopsy protocols were written that are today collected in the archives of the Krakow D

The lethal paraphiliac syndrome: accidental autoerotic deaths in four women and a review of the literature.

Four previously unpublished cases of female asphyxiophilia are presented. All women were found immobilised by obviously self-tied ropes, string or handcuffs. The women, who were alone at the time of death, died of a lethal paraphilia. The autopsies revealed asphyxiation as the cause of death, caused in two cases by suffocation as a result of hanging and strangulation and in the other two cases by plastic bags placed over the individuals head. In one case there was additional evidence at the scene that the deceased had inhaled ether. In none of the four cases was there any indication that the a

HSP70 and c-Fos expression of brain stem hypoglossal nucleus in drowning.

The brain stem hypoglossal nucleus (HN) is the center of nerves innervating the upper respiratory tract and is related to control of mastication, deglutition, speech and respiration. To elucidate the relationship between asphyxia and the HN, we investigated the change of hypoglossal neurons in cases of hanging, strangulation, smothering, choking, drowning and respiratory failure. Using immunohistochemical techniques, we observed the brain stem HN with antibodies against microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2), muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR), c-fos gene product (c-Fos) and 72 kD heat

Diagnosis of drowning by combined computer-assisted histomorphometry of lungs with blood strontium determination.

The aim of our study was to examine the combined contribution of computer-assisted histomorphometry of lungs with blood strontium (BS) measurement to the diagnosis of drowning in cadavers recovered from fresh water. The study population comprised 116 drowned subjects. The results for this group were compared with those obtained for three non-drowned groups: 22 subjects who died from causes other than asphyxia, 13 subjects who died of asphyxia (strangulation or hanging); and 23 healthy living subjects in whom normal BS level was measured. Samples of water where the bodies had been found were an
