Is There an Optimal Wavelength for Germicidal Ultraviolet Air Disinfection?

Germicidal UV (GUV) disinfection is effective against airborne pathogens, but it has been recently reported to increase indoor air pollution. Conventional GUV at 254 nm is applied in the upper room only due to skin/eye safety limits, while "Far UVC" (e.g., at 222 nm) is applied across the whole room due to less restrictive safety limits, enabling simpler installation and disinfection. GUV light sources at other wavelengths are being actively developed, creating an urgent need for guidance on their relative advantages. We investigate GUV between 185 and 310 nm by modeling in search of an optima

Influence of ultraviolet and photosynthetically active radiations on photosynthetic efficiency and antioxidant systems of the cyanobacterium Dolichospermum spiroides HKAR-23.

This study examines an in-depth analysis of the physiological and biochemical responses in the cyanobacterium Dolichospermum spiroides HKAR-23 under various treatment conditions of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), PAR + UV-A (PA), and PAR + UV-A + UV-B (PAB). Exposure to UV radiation (UVR) significantly reduced the levels of Chl a and phycocyanin. In contrast, under PA and PAB irradiations, the total carotene level increased. We found that non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) is the primarily responsible pathway for excessive energy dissipation during UVR exposure, while photochemical q

Involvement of the Light Signalling Components HY5 and BIC1,2 and SPA1 in Plant Responses to Elevated Daytime UV-B Doses.

Plants respond to ultraviolet B radiation (280-320 nm) with an integrated reaction that includes the reception of the acting stress factor, followed by the generation of reactive oxygen species and damage to macromolecules and membrane structures, as well as changes in cellular metabolism and the formation of protective systems. However, the involvement of key UV-B-related signalling components such as HY5, SPA1 and BIC1 or BIC2 proteins in physiological, biochemical and molecular responses remains insufficiently understood. The effects of 8, 16 and 24 h of UV-B exposure (within an 8 h photope

Humpback whales increase singing rate in response to seismic air guns.

Seismic air guns, widely used in offshore resource exploration, are a major source of anthropogenic noise in marine environments. For some cetaceans, these impulsive sounds can disrupt acoustic communication critical for breeding and social interactions. Male humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) produce long, highly structured songs as part of their reproductive display, often within areas overlapping seismic activity. This study investigated whether air gun noise alters the organisation and rate of humpback whale song. Four temporal parameters; inter-call interval, phrase duration, theme

Circadian rhythm entrainment factors and premenstrual syndrome: a cross-sectional study of the roles of light exposure, exercise, and meal timing.

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a common condition affecting women, involving physical and emotional symptoms. Since circadian rhythms may be disrupted during the premenstrual phase, regulating them could alleviate PMS. The purpose of this study was to determine how lifestyle factors (light exposure, exercise, and food intake) related to circadian rhythm entrainment contribute to PMS severity based on chronotype. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Japanese women aged 20–49 years. PMS severity was assessed using the Menstrual Distress Questionnaire. Lifestyle habits re

Ostrich egg shell as an accurate retrospective dosimeter using electron paramagnetic resonance technique.

This study investigates the dosimetric features of Ostrich egg shell (Oesh) using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to evaluate its potential as an accurate retrospective dosimeter. Key dosimetric characteristics, including sensitivity, dose-response, UV light effect, and temporal and thermal stability, were systematically evaluated. The EPR spectra of γ-irradiated samples revealed six radiation-induced signals (S₁–S₆) corresponding to biocarbonate radicals (CO₃⁻, CO₃³⁻, and CO₂⁻), with the dosimetric peak centered at g = 2.0040 ± 0.0016. The material exhibits a highly linear

Cost-effective high-performance poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)/sodium lignosulfonate composite films with enhanced biodegradability, UV protection and oxygen barrier properties.

Developing cost-effective biodegradable polymers with diverse properties remains critical for sustainable materials. This study presents a strategy to reduce poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) costs using industrial byproduct sodium lignosulfonate (SL) with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) as compatibilizer. The NCO groups of MDI react with hydroxyl groups of both SL and PBAT, ensuring homogeneous SL dispersion and strengthened interfacial interactions. SL/PBAT composite films with varying SL contents were prepared via melt-blending and blowing. The hydroxybenzene structure of

Rapid photo-crosslinking in living cells reveals protein-nucleic acid dynamics on a timescale of minutes.

The activation of chemical reactions in living cells using ultraviolet (UV) light enables the interrogation of biomolecules in their native environment with photoreactive probes or crosslinking reagents. Although numerous photo-crosslinking approaches have been successfully employed, they often suffer from common limitations, including low reaction yields, the need for long exposure times, and irradiation-induced cellular damage from heat, desiccation, or side reactions. We recently showed that 365 nm light-emitting diodes enable rapid, biorthogonal protein-DNA crosslinking in living cells, in

Detecting Fundamental Chiral Biosignatures in the Ultraviolet Polarization Spectrum.

Chiral molecules are ubiquitous and necessary for life as we know it. In extant life, the amino acid and sugar constituents of proteins and biopolymers consist of only one enantiomer. This "homochirality" is plausibly generic to any biochemical life and therefore may represent a pure, agnostic biosignature. The ultraviolet (UV) circular polarization spectrum offers a practical method for detecting chirality for generic biomass and hence can be a powerful tool for detecting such biosignatures in an extraterrestrial setting. Here, we demonstrate distinctive UV chiral signatures from astrobiology

Bacillus subtilis endospore integrity and viability on simulated Martian regolith in rotational UVC radiation exposures.

Current understanding of Martian regolith has advanced due to various rover explorations. Due to this, there are now several variants of Martian regolith that are chemically known and commercially available. These simulants are vital for panspermia models that suggest a transfer of simple life throughout the solar system via ejecta containing life from Mars when its surface was more favourable to host life. Bacteria that produce endospores are suitable candidates for these models as they have adequate protection from the harsh conditions of space. To assess this, the simple endospore former, B

Evolutionarily conserved but not indispensable for survival: plastic UV RESISTANCE LOCUS8 functionality in Marchantia polymorpha under laboratory and field conditions.

The functionality of the UV-B photoreceptor UV RESISTANCE LOCUS8 (UVR8) has been widely demonstrated in angiosperms under controlled conditions, but studies in nature or using bryophytes are scarce. To fill this gap, we compared the UV responses of the model liverwort Marchantia polymorpha and a mutant lacking a functional UVR8, to provide for the first time an evolutionary perspective of UVR8 performance in both controlled and field conditions. Under exposure to UV in the laboratory, UVR8 in wild type plants was essential to induce the expression of genes (CHS1, FNSI, HY5, SIG5, and ELIP2) an

Chemical stimulation sustains bioluminescence of living light materials.

Bioluminescence offers a powerful tool for real-time, label-free sensing for living materials. However, conventional approaches often rely on mechanical stimulation, which is difficult to standardize, localize, and sustain. Here, we introduce a chemical strategy to stimulate and sustain bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula, enabling durable, adaptive, light-emitting living materials. By embedding P. lunula into 3D-printed, alginate scaffolds, we engineered architecturally stable constructs with long-term cellular retention, viability, and light-emitting capacity. Expo

Pre-anthesis light signaling of sheathed developing barley inflorescences defines floral fate.

Pre-anthesis inflorescence greening (PAIG) is a distinctive developmental feature in members of the Triticeae such as barley, wheat, and rye. In barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), floral survival and fertility are major determinants of grain yield, yet the physiological processes supporting early inflorescence development remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated PAIG, a light-dependent chlorophyll accumulation occurring while immature inflorescences are still enclosed by leaf sheaths, and its role in overall inflorescence development. Using chlorophyll autofluorescence imaging and chlorophyll

Spatiotemporal characterization of single-stranded DNA intermediates after UV irradiation: II. Rapid growth and effects of recA and recJ.

Irradiation of E. coli with UV light results in the formation of post-replication gaps and induction of the SOS response. Here, we investigate the dynamics of single strand gap formation and resolution in cells growing with a 50 min doubling time within specially designed microfluidic chips, making observations on fluorescent gap markers in individual cells over the course of 8 hours. In cells proficient for gap repair, irradiation with UV at 5 J/m2 triggers an immediate increase in the number and intensity of gap markers. Cells lacking recF, recO, or recA cannot repair gaps via the canonical

A highly sensitive genetically encoded red cAMP sensor for multiplex imaging in vivo.

Circularly permuted green fluorescent protein (cpGFP)-based high-performance cAMP sensors have enabled real-time monitoring of cAMP dynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution in living animals. However, their utility is hampered by significant spectral overlap with other green/yellow fluorescent indicators and blue/cyan light-activated optogenetic actuators, limiting their compatibility in multiplexed imaging applications. While existing red cAMP sensors offer great spectral separation, they often suffer from a limited dynamic range ( < 1.5-fold in HEK293T cells), low cellular brightness, ag

Auditory-Motor Mechanisms of the Lombard Effect.

PURPOSE: The Lombard effect, a speaker's increase of vocal intensity in the presence of noise, is a common phenomenon. However, its underlying auditory mechanisms are unclear. METHOD: Participants produced speech before (baseline), during, and after exposure to systematically varied levels of speech-shaped noise. Lombard responses (i.e., elevated vocal intensity from baseline) were measured in an ecologically valid task (noise presented prior to voicing onset; Experiment 1) and in a task modeled after vocal motor learning paradigms (noise triggered by voice onset; Experiment 2). Loudness disc

Determinants of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by smartphones in French cellular telephony networks.

Smartphones are a major source of radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure, yet real-life determinants of uplink emissions remain poorly characterised. We conducted the first epidemiological study of smartphone cellular network uplink emissions in a general population sample, recruiting 167 volunteers across three French cities in 2022-2023. Emissions were measured quasi-continuously for a week during everyday activities using the novel DEVIN exposimeter, while the XMobiSensePlus application simultaneously recorded sensor values and smartphone activities in the background. Determinants of

Exposure conditions control plastic degradation in marine environments: Evidence from UV, floating, and intertidal experiments.

Plastic debris entering marine environments undergoes progressive weathering that promotes fragmentation into microplastics, yet the relative influence of polymer type and environmental exposure pathways on degradation dynamics remains insufficiently quantified. This study experimentally evaluated the degradation of six common consumer plastics (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS) under three environmentally relevant scenarios: controlled UV-A irradiation in seawater, buoyant exposure simulating floating ocean debris, and intertidal coastal deployment subject to tidal cycles. Changes in cyanobacterial growth and photosynthetic pigment under different conditions.

Today, cyanobacteria, as the first photosynthetic microorganisms, play an undeniable role in ecosystems and global markets. In this research, the biomass and photosynthetic pigment production under environmental and nutritional factors in Calothrix and Microchaete were investigated. Photoperiod did not influence biomass production, while both strains produced maximum biomass at a light intensity of 100 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Although 100 mM NaCl and 25 mM NaNO3 increased the biomass in both cyanobacteria, urea at 1 mM inhibited the growth of Calothrix, in contrast to Microchaete. On the other h
