Chronic exposure to ionizing radiation from uranium legacy sites remains a significant public health concern in Northern Kazakhstan. This review evaluates epidemiological, clinical, and environmental evidence published between 2000 and 2025, with particular emphasis on studies conducted during 2014-2023 in the Stepnogorsk region among populations residing near former uranium mining sites. Residents were exposed to annual external gamma doses of approximately 1.0-3.5 mSv and radon-related doses of up to 1.2 mSv. Cancer registry analyses revealed 1913 malignancy cases in the exposed group (vs. 3

Background: The increasing use of computed tomography (CT) has led to a substantial rise in population exposure to ionizing radiation, highlighting the need for accurate and individualized dose assessment methods. This study aimed to evaluate a novel dosimetric parameter-the size-specific dose-length product (DLPss)-in low-dose chest CT (LDCT) protocols and to compare its performance with conventional dose metrics. Methods: A retrospective single-center analysis was conducted in a cohort of 221 patients undergoing LDCT of the chest. Anthropometric parameters were used to calculate the size-spe

To investigate the role of peroxiredoxin isoforms (Prdx) in the radioresistance of cancer cells, the expression of Prdx1-6, DNA repair genes, and apoptosis regulators was studied in human cancer cell lines with varying radiosensitivities (A549, Caco-2, and MCF-7) after exposure to ionizing radiation. A correlation was found between high constitutive Prdx1-6 expression levels and increased radioresistance. Predominantly cytosolic isoforms Prdx2 and Prdx6 demonstrated pronounced induction after irradiation, indicating their critical role in protecting against radiation-induced oxidative stress.

Prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation is a known risk factor for neurodevelopmental deficits; however, the molecular mechanisms linking chronic embryonic insult to abnormal brain development remain poorly understood. This study investigated the long-term consequences of chronic prenatal gamma irradiation throughout gestation in C57BL/6 mice. Behavioural analysis of adult offspring revealed a specific increase in depression-like behaviours, with no significant alterations in anxiety or general exploratory activity. Immunohistochemical assessment demonstrated a significant reduction in adult h

Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm of the blood and bone marrow characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of precursor cells of B- or T-lymphocyte lineage. Usually, the disease arises because of spontaneous mutations in bone marrow cells. Risk factors include genetic predisposition, exposure to ionizing radiation, prior chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and certain environmental factors. Clinical manifestations may include recurrent infections, anemia, and an increased tendency toward bleeding and stroke. A 12-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with a

This study presents a novel therapeutic strategy utilizing a hyaluronic acid-glycyrrhizic acid (HLA-GLA) conjugate to counteract γ-radiation-induced neurochemical and systemic damage in rats. Given the increasing medical and occupational exposure to ionizing radiation and the lack of affordable radioprotective agents, the conjugation of GLA with HLA was hypothesized to improve bioavailability and protective efficacy. The HLA-GLA complex was synthesized by coupling aminated GLA to HLA and characterized using GC-MS, FTIR, UV-VIS spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. Male Wistar rats receive

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Therapeutic exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) is fundamental to radiotherapy; however, radiation-induced skin toxicity remains a common and dose-limiting adverse effect. Although synthetic radioprotectors such as amifostine reduce radiation-mediated damage through free radical scavenging and DNA repair enhancement, their clinical application is constrained by significant side effects. Natural products, particularly antioxidant-rich medicinal plants, represent a promising complementary strategy for protecting skin tissue against radiation-induced oxidative and genotoxi

The aim of this study was to assess the level of compliance of operating room personnel with radiation protection and safety measures against ionizing radiation. A cross-sectional study was conducted among operating room staff in three Moroccan hospitals equipped with a fluoroscopy system. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire addressing practices, knowledge, and attitudes related to radiation protection. Among participants, 78% considered wearing a personal dosimeter during image-guided procedures as necessary, yet only 16% reported actually using one. None of the respon

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), previously termed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is the most prevalent chronic liver disorder globally and is strongly associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and the metabolic syndrome. Accurate and timely assessment of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis is critical for risk stratification and therapeutic monitoring. However, liver biopsy, the current reference standard, is invasive, subject to sampling variability, and unsuitable for repeated assessments of a large population. Non-invasive imaging modalities

ABSTRACT: For more than 20 years, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has been an important tool in the imaging of liver tumors, enabling detection and differentiation of the most relevant hepatic lesions with high sensitivity and specificity. Its applications include: immediate characterization of incidentally detected focal liver lesions, assessment of the number and extent of liver metastases in patients with known malignancy, and more detailed evaluation of the liver in chronic liver diseases such as cirrhosis. CEUS of the liver also supports invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

Exposure to ionizing radiation has been associated with the development of neoplasms in humans and other animals. Detection of both neoplastic growth and effects of radiation with standard laboratory testing (hematology and serum chemistry analyses) is problematic. There are no specific biomarkers present in biological fluids (blood, urine) for early detection of neoplastic growth or long-term effects of radiation exposure, but these would be extremely useful for monitoring both treatment efficacy and detecting undesirable side effects in patients undergoing radiotherapy. We conducted a retros

Exposure to ionizing radiation is a common occupational hazard for the orthopaedic surgeon, ubiquitous among subspecialities. There are known detrimental effects of radiation exposure including cataracts and increased cancer risk. It is imperative for both practicing orthopaedic surgeons and trainees to recognize that these risks exist and to understand what effect our occupational exposure can have over the length of a career. The purpose of this review is to highlight current recommendations and guidelines regarding ionizing radiation dose exposure, summarize the available literature specifi

Background/Objectives: The G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) is known to interact with cellular stress responses and DNA damage pathways. Therefore, exposure to ionizing radiation may modulate the biological consequences of single-nucleotide polymorphisms in the GPR30 gene. This study aims to evaluate the association between GPER polymorphisms and radiation sensitivity. Methods: The study included 50 healthcare workers exposed to ionizing radiation and 36 healthy individuals with no known occupational exposure to radiation. Genomic DNA was isolated and PCR products were purified using

INTRODUCTION: Ionizing radiation plays a fundamental role in clinical practice for diagnosis and therapy. However, patients with reproductive potential, including women of reproductive age who may be pregnant or become pregnant in the future, often report limited knowledge and increased anxiety regarding these procedures. Although medical exposures involve inherent risks, when examinations are appropriately justified and optimized, clinical benefits generally outweigh potential radiation-related risks. Nevertheless, misconceptions and risk overestimation may lead to refusal or delay of necessa

The linear no-threshold dose response model (LNT) is used to estimate health effects due to exposure to ionizing radiation. It has been used extensively by US regulatory agencies for many decades to establish radiation exposure limits and to estimate future health (primarily cancer) effects for both projected (e.g., for a proposed nuclear facility or activity) and previous radiation exposures. The model assumes a linear relationship between dose and health effects, even for very low doses within the range of natural background radiation, where biological effects may be difficult or impossible

OBJECTIVE: This review will examine how reduced-dose computed tomography (CT; ≤1.5mSv), compared with conventional-dose CT (>1.5mSv), performs in detecting parenchymal lung abnormalities in humans and phantoms undergoing chest CT imaging.
INTRODUCTION: Deliberate exposure to ionizing radiation during medical investigations, such as chest CT, should be as low as reasonably practicable to reduce the risk of inducing cancer. Certain populations are at particular risk, such as those undergoing lung cancer screening and workers exposed to dust, and require multiple scans over time with high baseli

Humans will return to the Moon and travel to deep space on their journey to Mars. Space exploration presents significant hazards to human health, including exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) from galactic cosmic rays (GCR) and solar particle events (SPEs). Space radiation-induced carcinogenesis is considered a primary risk to astronaut health. However, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction have emerged as significant health risks for astronauts. Small animal models, particularly rodents, have provided valuable information regarding IR effects on the cardiov

Exposure to ionizing radiation, such as from radiation therapy or accidental radiation exposure can have adverse effects on the heart. While radiation injury in the heart may include cardiomyocyte senescence, there are no available strategies to prevent this phenomenon. This study evaluated the effects of the mitochondrial-targeted peptide SS-31 (elamipretide) on radiation-induced cell senescence in cardiomyoblast H9C2 cells and human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs). Exposure to γ-radiation at doses of 2, 5, and 10 Gy inhibited H9C2 cell proliferation in a dose

Radiation-induced intestinal injury is characterized by structural and functional impairment of intestinal tissues following exposure to ionizing radiation, and homeostasis of the enteric nervous system is essential for preserving normal gastrointestinal physiological function. While amifostine confers radioprotection primarily through free radical scavenging and modulation of the intestinal microbiota, its regulatory effects on the enteric nervous system remain unexplored. In this study, a mouse model of radiation-induced intestinal injury was established by targeted abdominal irradiation wit
