Monitoring radiation exposure through skin swab multi-omic profiling.

Exposure to ionizing radiation poses major health risks across medical, occupational, and spaceflight settings, driving the need for rapid, non-invasive biodosimetry tools. As the body's most accessible organ and the most frequent site of radiation injury, the skin represents a promising interface for monitoring exposure. Using colonized human skin equivalents (coHSE; 0 Gy n = 8, 1 Gy n = 6, 4 Gy n = 6) and mice (n = 6/group) models, we performed multi-omic profiling, integrating metabolomics, lipidomics, and metagenomics, on skin swab samples collected after exposure to 0, 1, or 4 Gy of x-ray

CDH13 Is Associated with Cellular Viability After Exposure to Ionizing Radiation Using Genome-Wide Screening.

It is well known that genetic variants contribute to cellular sensitivity to chemotherapeutic agents and ionizing radiation (IR). The aim of this study was to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and genes associated with the spectrum of normal cellular sensitivity of lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs) towards ionizing radiation and mitomycin C (MMC). In the first step, we determined the viability of LCLs established from male participants of the Berlin Aging Study II (BASE-II) aged ≥62 years following treatments with increasing doses of IR (n = 137 cell lines) or MMC (n = 140 cell li

High-resolution modeling of indoor radon exposure with uncertainty quantification in Utah.

Indoor radon accounts for 37% of population-level exposure to ionizing radiation in the United States. However, radon metrics are typically reported at coarse spatial scales, potentially obscuring meaningful local variation. We developed a high-resolution modeling framework to estimate indoor radon concentrations across Utah while explicitly quantifying predictive uncertainty. A total of 19,497 residential radon measurements collected between 2006 and 2017 were combined with environmental and housing characteristics and analyzed using a geospatial neural network that accommodates spatial depen

Whole-Body MRI Versus 18F-FDG-PET/CT for the Detection of Nodal and Distant Metastases in Pediatric Patients with Solid Tumors.

Background/Objectives: Pediatric patients with solid tumors (non-lymphoma) require adequate staging prior to and during therapy. 18F-FDG-PET/CT is commonly used for the detection of tumorous lesions, with the drawback of exposure to ionizing radiation. Whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) can be considered as a complementary method according to clinical guidelines. The main objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of the aforementioned methods for the detection of metastases, both separately and in combination. Methods: We retrospectively assessed sensitivity and specificity of 18F-

Radiation Countermeasure Gamma-Tocotrienol Inhibits Accumulation of Lipid Peroxidation Products in the Serum of Nonhuman Primates Exposed to Partial- or Total-Body Radiation-A Hallmark of Inhibition of Irradiation-Induced Ferroptosis?

Gamma-tocotrienol (GT3) is one of the constituents of vitamin E that demonstrated significant radioprotective efficacy in murine and nonhuman primate (NHP) models. Considering the antioxidant activity of GT3 and its role in terminating lipid peroxidation, we hypothesize that mechanism of radioprotective effect of GT3 may involve the inhibition of irradiation-induced ferroptosis-a form of regulated cell death characterized by excessive, iron-dependent, peroxidation of lipids in cellular membranes. To test this hypothesis, the metabolomic and proteomic data from serum samples of GT3- or vehicle-

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation in a nuclear medicine department: myth and reality.

Nuclear medicine is a diagnostic and therapeutic medical specialty based on the administration of radiopharmaceuticals emitting ionizing radiation (IR). In this context, healthcare professionals are exposed to low doses of radiation during their activity. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of occupational exposures in nuclear medicine in France, based on data from the 2023 IRSN and 2024 ASN reports, and to put them into perspective with those of other medical or industrial sectors, as well as with natural background exposure. Occupational exposures in nuclear medicine remain ve

A cell-based model approach to radiation-induced breast cancer development.

Epidemiological studies, e.g., on atomic bomb survivors, have shown that exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk of developing breast cancer. Typically, these studies correlate intrinsic and extrinsic contributing factors with the observed cases of breast cancer in a defined population. In this study, we attempt to model these relationships at the cellular level. For this, a nine-stage model of the epithelial cells in the milk ducts is developed, considering transition probabilities between the stages. As a proof of principle, the transition probabilities between the stages of our mo

Exosomes in early lung cancer diagnostics: the current state of progress made and prospects.

The high mortality rate of lung cancer primarily results from its late-stage diagnosis, at which point metastasis has usually occurred and therapeutic options are limited, leading to an overall 5-year survival rate below 20% in most countries. The current screening method, low-dose computed tomography (LDCT), faces challenges such as high false-positive rates, which can result in overdiagnosis and unnecessary surgeries, as well as the risk of cancer due to repeated exposure to ionizing radiation. Although tumor tissue detection remains the gold standard for cancer diagnosis, it is limited by i

Cumulative ionizing radiation exposure in pediatric patients with chronic diseases: a narrative review.

Pediatric patients with chronic diseases commonly experience frequent imaging, which is likely to result in significant cumulative exposure to ionizing radiation. A review of the literature on cumulative and effective radiation doses reported in non-oncologic pediatric chronic disease populations was conducted; 129 records were identified through searches in the SCOPUS, PubMed, and Web of Science databases, and data on disease type, imaging modalities used, and reported dose metrics were extracted. Across the 41 included studies, radiation exposure was influenced by diagnosis, age at first ima

Thermoluminescence-Based Detection of Irradiation in Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis) Dietary Supplements: A Pilot Study on Undeclared Treatment and Labelling Compliance.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food irradiation is a recognized method for the microbiological decontamination and preservation of plant raw materials; however, in the European Union, its use is subject to strict legal regulation and to a mandatory labelling obligation. For dietary supplements, which are legally classified as foodstuffs, this issue is particularly important for market transparency and the consumer's right to information. The aim of this pilot study was to assess the presence of post-irradiation characteristics in selected dietary supplements available at retail in Poland, with particu

Exploring potential associations between low-dose cardiac catheterization radiation and blood microRNA changes in children with congenital heart disease.

The risk of cancer from medical exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) in pediatric patients-particularly those with congenital heart disease (CHD)-is a concern, given the need for repeated X-ray-guided cardiac catheterization (CC) procedures throughout their lives. To better understand the effects of low-dose IR, this study-part of the European HARMONIC project-investigated changes in blood miRNA expression following CC in CHD patients. Small RNA sequencing was performed on a discovery cohort of 10 CHD patients at three time points: before CC (T0), immediately after (T1), and 1 year later (T2).

Hypercapnia enhances airway smooth muscle contractility via STIM1-dependent Ca2+ signaling.

Hypercapnia, elevated carbon dioxide (CO2), is common in advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and predicts poor clinical outcomes. Traditionally considered a consequence of disease severity, hypercapnia may drive disease progression by promoting airway dysfunction. Here, we show that hypercapnia acts as an active stressor, driving airway smooth muscle (ASM) constriction through a stromal interaction molecule 1-dependent (STIM1-dependent) pathway. Hypercapnia rapidly activates ERK, triggering sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium (Ca2+) release via phosphorylation of the inositol 1,4,

Assessment of occupational radiation exposure among radiology workers in Ghana using cytogenetic biomarkers and thermoluminescent dosimetry.

Occupational exposure to ionizing radiation remains an important radiation protection concern among radiology workers. This study assessed cytogenetic damage among radiology workers in Ghana using the dicentric chromosome assay and cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay alongside routine thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) records. Eleven occupationally exposed workers and thirteen controls were recruited. No dicentric chromosomes were observed in either group. The mean annual occupational TLD dose was 3.89 ± 2.50 mSv, below the International Commission on Radiological Protection recommended occup

Diagnostic Excellence, Imaging Stewardship, and Re-establishing the Value Proposition in Radiology: A Look Back and a Way Forward.

Historically, imaging was used to test specific clinical hypotheses and reduce diagnostic uncertainty by clarifying, narrowing, and prioritizing differential diagnoses. Advanced imaging, such as CT and MRI, was used judiciously owing to concerns about high costs and, in the case of CT scanning, the need to limit patients' exposure to ionizing radiation. But times have changed: the threshold for ordering imaging tests is now substantially lower, and as a result, a high - and growing - volume of low-value imaging is performed, often without any particular clinical or diagnostic hypothesis in min
