Ecophysiological responses of boreal-temperate Atlantic kelp at their equatorial range limit.

Portuguese kelp forests are the southernmost stronghold of boreal-temperate species in the Eastern North Atlantic, forming a key biogeographic boundary under rapid ocean warming. Within these forests, species such as Laminaria hyperborea and Saccharina latissima occupy distinct depth ranges, yet the physiological mechanisms underlying this zonation remain unclear. We compared their responses to temperature and light to test whether adult ecophysiology contributes to their vertical distribution and may also influence their latitudinal range limits. Both species displayed high tolerance to short

Stroboscopic light stimulation safety within and beyond laboratory settings: Observational evidence and practical guidance.

Stroboscopic light stimulation (SLS) reliably evokes geometric visual hallucinations and, in some contexts, altered-state experiences. Its increasing use in research, public, recreational and exploratory clinical settings creates a need for proportionate safety guidance. The main concern is a visually triggered seizure in a susceptible individual; reported non-epileptic responses include discomfort or distress. We combined a retrospective survey of safety practices and reported events across four laboratories, provider-reported operational data from two commercial SLS platforms, and a focused

Vocal plasticity at different time spans during exposures to biotic and abiotic natural sounds in an austral temperate forest frog.

Several instances of short-term plasticity of reproductive behaviors are known to modulate interactions among competing individuals. Habituation and sensitization processes result in decrements and increments, respectively, of agonistic behaviors in breeding areas. The occurrence of such phenomena in the long term have been reported to a quite restricted extent. Frogs communicating acoustically experience auditory activation during days of exposure to conspecific signals, and thus we looked for vocal activation over such time span in male frogs Batrachyla taeniata. A total of 72 frogs were exp

Ultraviolet B radiation improves salt-induced responses in the facultative halophyte Chenopodium quinoa.

In natural environments, plants are continuously exposed to multiple abiotic stresses, such as high salinity and excess ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation. While responses to individual stresses are well understood, less is known about their combined impact. Here, we treated quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) seedlings with salt (0 and 200 mm NaCl) under either photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) or PAR supplemented with UV-B radiation (313 nm, 1 h/d, 1.71 W/m2) to investigate their response to combined salt and UV-B stress. While salinity had minimal effects on plant growth, it decreased stomatal co

Development and validation of an in vivo pain assessment method for 28-day exposure to intermediate frequency magnetic fields.

The objective of this study was to establish guidelines for evaluating the health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). To achieve this, a comprehensive evaluation of EMF effects on living organisms from both engineering and biological perspectives is essential. As part of this study, we examined the impact of intermediate-frequency magnetic fields (IF-MF) exposure on peripheral nerves in mice and validated the reliability of five pain assessment methods. The engineering approach was based on our pilot study, while the biological approach involved exposing mice to IF-MF for a 28-day period

Measurement of urban environmental exposure to extremely low frequency magnetic fields in several Spanish regions.

This is an observational descriptive study carried out in three Spanish regions to identify typical environmental levels of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF-MF) in diverse population settings as well as in the proximity to various electrical infrastructures. To achieve this, measurement protocols were previously established considering national and international reference standards. To describe the public exposure to ELF-MF, both immission and emission levels have been quantified in public spaces and close to the main infrastructure related to the transportation and distribution of

Unveiling the effects of light exposure Bevacizumab stability in clinical settings.

Bevacizumab was the first available anti-angiogenic therapy with a monoclonal antibody, initially approved against colorectal cancer. It is now used intravenously in the treatment of several other malignancies and in combination with chemotherapy. It binds to all circulating, soluble VEGF-A isoforms, inhibiting angiogenesis, and thereby reducing tumor vascularization. During storage, transport, dilution and administration, Bevacizumab is exposed to different stressors, including ambient light, which can compromise its efficacy and safety. Here, the chemico-physical instability induced by real-

Application of audible acoustic stimulation to investigate growth responses in three Pleurotus species.

Acoustic stimulation can influence microbial growth and metabolism, yet little is known about its impact on edible mushrooms of the genus Pleurotus. This study evaluated the effects of audible sound waves on yield and fructification in three commercially relevant Pleurotus strains. Substrate blocks of Pleurotus eryngii, P. ostreatus, and P. ostreatus x P. eryngii hybrid (a commercial hybrid strain known as 'Black Pearl') were cultivated under controlled production conditions. Blocks were exposed to sound frequencies of 50 Hz, 100 Hz, 225 Hz, or 750 Hz at 80 dB for 300 s during the primordia st

Associations between sunshine and influenza or influenza-like illness, a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Influenza and influenza-like illness (ILI) impose an immense burden to public health. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation might impact the spread of influenza. We examined associations between UV radiation and sunshine duration and influenza or ILI. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis including studies with UV radiation, UV index or sunshine duration as exposure and influenza/ILI as outcome. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted using the Knapp-Hartung method to calculate the pooled relative risks (RR) of the associations between UV radiation and sunshine duration and

Non-invasive modulation of brain activity and behavior by transcranial radio frequency stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Achieving non-invasive, targeted modulation of deep brain tissue remains a major challenge in neurotechnology. Current non-invasive brain stimulation methods-such as transcranial electrical (TES), magnetic (TMS), and focused ultrasound (TFUS) stimulation-suffer from limitations in spatial focality, penetration depth, or skull-related distortions. Radio frequency (RF) energy, which penetrates biological tissue effectively, offers an alternative avenue for neural modulation. This study introduces Transcranial Radio Frequency Stimulation (TRFS) as a novel, non-invasive neuromodulation

Ambient RF-EMF exposure in surgical operating rooms from telecommunication antennas and Wi-Fi sources.

In recent years, many studies have characterized ambient exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in various environments. In hospitals, operating rooms accommodate many professionals for extended periods, often with waiting times during which mobile devices connected to wireless networks are used. These conditions could increase workers' exposure during surgical procedures. This study aimed to characterize ambient RF-EMF exposure during surgical operations in 15 operating rooms at the General University Hospital and the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Albacete (Spain). Measurem

Comparative analysis of ultraviolet-B radiation and abscisic acid revealing distinct mechanistic approaches to drought tolerance in highland barley.

Drought tolerance in highland barley (qingke) is modulated by distinct responses to ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) and abscisic acid (ABA). Plants were exposed to two drought levels (moderate: 50 % soil water content and severe: 30 % soil water content), alongside two UVB intensities (low: 5-6 kJ m-2 d-1 and high: 14-15 kJ m-2 d-1), and two ABA concentrations (low: 70 μM and high: 150 μM). Physiological analyses revealed that UVB exposure significantly reduced the photosynthetic rate by 46.5 % under severe drought conditions. In contrast, ABA treatment helped to maintain the rate and improved w
