Ambient RF-EMF exposure in surgical operating rooms from telecommunication antennas and Wi-Fi sources.

In recent years, many studies have characterized ambient exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in various environments. In hospitals, operating rooms accommodate many professionals for extended periods, often with waiting times during which mobile devices connected to wireless networks are used. These conditions could increase workers' exposure during surgical procedures. This study aimed to characterize ambient RF-EMF exposure during surgical operations in 15 operating rooms at the General University Hospital and the Perpetuo Socorro Hospital in Albacete (Spain). Measurem

Comparative analysis of ultraviolet-B radiation and abscisic acid revealing distinct mechanistic approaches to drought tolerance in highland barley.

Drought tolerance in highland barley (qingke) is modulated by distinct responses to ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB) and abscisic acid (ABA). Plants were exposed to two drought levels (moderate: 50 % soil water content and severe: 30 % soil water content), alongside two UVB intensities (low: 5-6 kJ m-2 d-1 and high: 14-15 kJ m-2 d-1), and two ABA concentrations (low: 70 μM and high: 150 μM). Physiological analyses revealed that UVB exposure significantly reduced the photosynthetic rate by 46.5 % under severe drought conditions. In contrast, ABA treatment helped to maintain the rate and improved w

Mind the Individual: Physiological Reactions to Long-Term Colored Light Exposure Assessed by SPA-fNIRS (Knisely Award Honorary Lecture).

Colored light exposure (CLE) is a common occurrence in everyday life. In today's modern society, we are increasingly exposed to various sources of colored light, including advertisements, computer and smartphone displays, energy-saving light bulbs, private settings, and street lighting with LEDs. Therefore, the effects of colored light on human physiology are becoming a subject of growing interest to both the research community and society. To gain a deeper understanding of the complex effects of long-term CLE on the human body, we have conducted a series of pioneering studies (with results pu

Sharks at night, exposed to city light: Melatonin concentrations in two shark species differ in response to artificial light at night.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a pervasive pollutant which can extend into coastal waters. Previous studies have revealed that ALAN can suppress melatonin levels in teleost fishes. However, the effects of ALAN on elasmobranch physiology have yet to be investigated. To address this knowledge gap, we examined the relationship between ALAN exposure and blood melatonin levels in wild nurse (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and blacktip (Carcharhinus limbatus) sharks sampled off Miami, Florida (USA). We hypothesized that sharks sampled at night in metropolitan areas exposed to high ALAN, would exhibit

Histological characterization and quantification of late damage in mice after proton and photon irradiation.

Purpose: Radiotherapy is a widely used cancer treatment, and radiation-induced fibrosis is a frequent late effect that can significantly reduce patients' quality of life. Many approaches for evaluating and grading radiation late damage, such as fibrosis, are based on semi-quantitative methods. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological changes associated with late radiation damage in mice after exposure to proton and photon irradiation, and to evaluate the applicability of stereological methods for quantitative assessment of these changes. Materials and Methods: A mouse leg model w

Light-induced analgesia provides a drug-free optical method for pain relief via activation of TRAAK k+ channels.

Pain management in animal experimentation is crucial for both ethical and scientific reasons, as unmanaged pain can distort physiological responses compromising data reliability. Current strategies are often invasive and pharmacology-based, introducing variability and confounding effects. Here, we present Light-Induced Analgesia, a drug-free, non-invasive method for pain relief in animals. We show that 365 nm illumination activates the pain-inhibitory TRAAK two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channel. This activation is driven by the oxidation of a native methionine at TRAAK's regulatory fenestrat

Occupational exposure to metal welding and cataract: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Metal welding generates ultraviolet radiation (UVR) of cataractogenic wavelengths, and UVR emitted during welding has been associated with cataract formation, but results from prior studies are conflicting. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiological studies addressing associations between occupational metal welding and cataract. The literature search was conducted on November 15, 2023, across seven literature databases. Studies comparing age-adjusted occurrence of cataract among welders and control groups were included. Two reviewers extracted d

Molecular Hydrogen Attenuates Chronic Inflammation and Delays the Onset of Ultraviolet B-Induced Skin Carcinogenesis in Mice.

Molecular hydrogen (H2) exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, its role in ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin carcinogenesis remains unclear. Male HR-1 hairless mice received continuous H2 (2% hydrogen gas inhalation plus hydrogen-rich water (HRW)) or control treatment (normal air plus dehydrogenated water) during chronic dorsal UVB exposure (270 mJ/cm2, three times per week, 20 weeks), followed by a 10-week observation period. This protocol was replicated independently. H2 exposure consistently delayed the onset of papilloma and reduced cumulative tumor counts in both s

Electromagnetic Exposure from RF Antennas on Subway Station Attendant: A Thermal Analysis.

With the rapid development of wireless communication systems, the electromagnetic environment in subway stations has become increasingly complex, raising concerns about the long-term safety of station attendants who are chronically exposed to radiofrequency (RF) fields. At present, multiphysics analyses specifically addressing RF antenna exposure scenarios for subway attendants remain limited. To assess occupational electromagnetic exposure risks, this paper establishes a comprehensive electromagnetic-thermal coupling simulation model incorporating RF antennas, station-platform structures, and

Influence of age on speech-in-noise and spatial processing abilities in middle-aged adults.

Speech perception in noise (SPIN) difficulties are commonly associated with older adults, but emerging evidence suggests they may begin in midlife. This study investigated SPIN and spatial processing abilities in middle-aged adults using the Spatial Separation Sentence Test-Kannada (SSST-K). A cross-sectional design assessed 76 participants aged 41-60 years, divided into two groups (41-50 and 51-60 years). Assessments included: (1) the SSST-K to evaluate SPIN and spatial processing, (2) the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) for general cognition, and (3) standardized questionnaires measurin

Research Note: An in vitro hypothalamic slice culture model from adult geese for investigating light-mediated regulation of avian reproduction.

The avian hypothalamus regulates reproduction by integrating light signals through deep brain photoreceptors, yet suitable adult in vitro models remain lacking. In this study, we established a functional hypothalamic slice culture system from adult geese. Slices (300 µm thick) remained viable for over one week. Light exposure, particularly 12 h of light stimulation, significantly upregulated the expression of photoreceptors opn5 and opn4, as well as key signaling genes TSH and DIO2. Meanwhile, important reproductive regulatory genes GnRH and GnIH exhibited opposite expression patterns in respo

Comparison of PDT using a 660 nm laser and methylene blue vs. an 810 nm laser and indocyanine green on different Candida species - in vitro.

INTRODUCTION: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers broad-spectrum antifungal effects with lower resistance in some studies. This study evaluates the effectiveness of two PDT protocols, using a 660 nm diode laser with methylene blue (MB) compared to an 810 nm diode laser with indocyanine green (ICG), in reducing colony counts of Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. tropicalis, and C. krusei. METHODS: This experimental laboratory study tested 4 standard Candida species in seven groups (2 PDT, 2 photosensitizers alone, 2 lasers wavelength with saline, 1 control with saline) each containing five replic

Effect of noise on the behaviour and microbiome of a common temperate estuarine fish.

Underwater noise pollution is an increasing stressor in marine and estuarine environments, with anthropogenic activity altering natural soundscapes and adversely affecting animal behaviour, which is often an early indicator of environmental stress with broader physiological implications. Host-associated microbiomes, particularly the gut, are central to organism health, influencing digestion, immunity, metabolism, and stress regulation. The gut microbiome also plays a key role in linking environmental disturbances with physiological condition and behavioural changes, yet the impacts of noise on

Impaired Tone-in-Noise Detection in Individuals Who Report Temporary Hearing Symptoms After Noise Exposure.

OBJECTIVES: Current hearing conservation standards assume that changes in the pure-tone audiogram fully capture the effects of noise-induced hearing damage. However, recent data suggest that individuals who frequently experience acute hearing symptoms after noise exposure may suffer long-term increases in hearing difficulty, even when their pure-tone thresholds remain unchanged. It is unclear whether these increases in subjective hearing difficulties correspond to objective measures of hearing ability. This study explores (1) whether tone-in-noise detection is negatively impacted by a history

Investigating the Combined Effect of Artificial Light at Night and Noise on Sleep Quality of High School Students.

Adolescents frequently use smartphones, smartwatches, personal computers, tablets, and other electronic devices during the day and at night. Whilst these devices are kept close to the eyes, they emit artificial light at night (ALAN) and generate noise. ALAN and noise are also emitted from other indoor and outdoor sources, such as home appliances, road traffic, street lighting, and advertising boards. However, the effect of these exposures has been studied mainly in the adult population, and little is known about their combined effect on adolescents. The present study aims to bridge this knowle

Pharmacological targeting of NR4A1 restrains lipid metabolism-ferroptosis axis in UVR-induced skin aging.

BACKGROUND: Skin photo-aging induced by ultraviolet radiation (UVR) leads to aesthetic alterations, structural degradation, and loss of barrier function. Ferroptosis has been implicated upon UVR stress but the driving modifiers remain largely undefined. Naringin has been reported to exert protective effects against UVR damage, however, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. PURPOSE: To explore the driving factors of UVR-induced ferroptosis and to comprehensively evaluate the effects and underlying mechanisms of naringin in repressing UVR-induced photo-aging. METHODS: A mou

Photoprotection from UV light-induced telomere shortening and DNA damage by a broad-spectrum sunscreen.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) radiation contributes to photoaging and skin cancer by causing DNA damage and generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). It also induces telomere shortening, a key factor in cellular aging. However, no studies have investigated whether sunscreen can prevent short-term telomere shortening caused by UV exposure to human skin. OBJECTIVES: We have examined whether the use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen product can protect at the telomere level from the harmful effects of UV light. METHODS: Human keratinocytes and a 3D skin model were exposed to 10 J/cm2 of solar-simula

Physiological effects of anthropogenic sound on aquatic animals: where are we and what is next?

Many aquatic animals have a well-developed sense of hearing as sound is important for communication underwater. However, this trait leaves them susceptible to injury, and physiological and behavioral impacts from exposure to intense or persistent anthropogenic sounds. We provide an overview of the current state of knowledge on the physiological effects of five main sources of anthropogenic sound: marine traffic, seismic exploration, pile driving, other industrial activity and sonar. Our understanding of impacts varies greatly by sound type and taxon, although the studied species do not represe

Specific wavelengths of light modulate honey bee locomotor activity.

Light plays a crucial role in honey bee (Apis mellifera) behavior by influencing foraging, navigation, and locomotor activity (LMA). While the effects of light on LMA have been previously documented, the specific roles of different wavelengths have remained unknown. In this study, we investigated how exposure to specific infrared (IR, 849 nm), green (528 nm), blue (447 nm), and ultraviolet (UV, 372 nm) wavelengths, as well as their combinations, affected LMA. Specifically, using a custom-built illumination setup and the Api-TRACE video tracking system, we monitored and analyzed bee movement in

Chloroplast differentiation in epidermal cells: an environmental response supporting submerged photosynthesis in Rorippa aquatica.

While the epidermal cells of terrestrial plants typically lack chloroplasts, this is not the case for aquatic plants, a trait that likely evolved to enhance photosynthetic efficiency underwater. Amphibious plants display various response strategies to survive under both terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, we described an environmental response in the amphibious plant Rorippa aquatica that involves chloroplasts differentiating into epidermal cells upon submergence. This phenomenon has not been previously documented and was named environmentally responsive epidermal chloroplast
