Microcyst formation can be induced by increasing the osmotic pressure of the surrounding medium. Certain ions such as K(+), Ca(++), or Mg(++) may be needed in the encystment process, and the presence of divalent cations increases the rate of encystment and cyst maturation. Young dogs were maintained in isolation from other dogs and under varying degrees of exposure to an alien species (mature rabbits). Parametric observations indicate that an interspecific social attachment develops during the initial hours of co-habitation. The later social interaction patterns of the dogs were influenced, but not irrevocably fixed, by the early cross-specific rearing experience.

The effect of strychnine sulfate and light on pigmentation in the ciliate protozoan Blepharisma undulans has been determined. Upon exposure of cells to strychnine, the pigment granules become loosened from their surrounding membranes. Eventually these membranes break and the granules are simultaneously released from the cell. At the cell surface, a fusion occurs between adjacent membraneless granules with the incorporation of membrane fragments. Special media suitable for the isolation of fungi growing on jute were developed. Species that would better resist sunlight, such as organisms with dark hyphae and spores or closed fruit bodies, predominated on weather-exposed fabrics. Retinal extracts have been prepared from dark-adapted mudsuckers by treatment of retinal tissue or of isolated outer segments of the visual cells with digitonin solution. The extracts were examined spectrophotometrically and found to absorb light maximally between the wave lengths of 488 and 510 mmicro, depending on the proportion of yellow impurities and light-sensitive pigment present. Eighteen patients with vitiligo were treated with two crystalline substances, xanthotoxin (Ammoidin) and imperatorin (Ammidin) from the plant Ammi majus. Four patients improved more than 50 per cent.
