Chemical stimulation sustains bioluminescence of living light materials.

Bioluminescence offers a powerful tool for real-time, label-free sensing for living materials. However, conventional approaches often rely on mechanical stimulation, which is difficult to standardize, localize, and sustain. Here, we introduce a chemical strategy to stimulate and sustain bioluminescence in the marine dinoflagellate Pyrocystis lunula, enabling durable, adaptive, light-emitting living materials. By embedding P. lunula into 3D-printed, alginate scaffolds, we engineered architecturally stable constructs with long-term cellular retention, viability, and light-emitting capacity. Expo

Pre-anthesis light signaling of sheathed developing barley inflorescences defines floral fate.

Pre-anthesis inflorescence greening (PAIG) is a distinctive developmental feature in members of the Triticeae such as barley, wheat, and rye. In barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), floral survival and fertility are major determinants of grain yield, yet the physiological processes supporting early inflorescence development remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated PAIG, a light-dependent chlorophyll accumulation occurring while immature inflorescences are still enclosed by leaf sheaths, and its role in overall inflorescence development. Using chlorophyll autofluorescence imaging and chlorophyll

Spatiotemporal characterization of single-stranded DNA intermediates after UV irradiation: II. Rapid growth and effects of recA and recJ.

Irradiation of E. coli with UV light results in the formation of post-replication gaps and induction of the SOS response. Here, we investigate the dynamics of single strand gap formation and resolution in cells growing with a 50 min doubling time within specially designed microfluidic chips, making observations on fluorescent gap markers in individual cells over the course of 8 hours. In cells proficient for gap repair, irradiation with UV at 5 J/m2 triggers an immediate increase in the number and intensity of gap markers. Cells lacking recF, recO, or recA cannot repair gaps via the canonical

A highly sensitive genetically encoded red cAMP sensor for multiplex imaging in vivo.

Circularly permuted green fluorescent protein (cpGFP)-based high-performance cAMP sensors have enabled real-time monitoring of cAMP dynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution in living animals. However, their utility is hampered by significant spectral overlap with other green/yellow fluorescent indicators and blue/cyan light-activated optogenetic actuators, limiting their compatibility in multiplexed imaging applications. While existing red cAMP sensors offer great spectral separation, they often suffer from a limited dynamic range ( < 1.5-fold in HEK293T cells), low cellular brightness, ag

Auditory-Motor Mechanisms of the Lombard Effect.

PURPOSE: The Lombard effect, a speaker's increase of vocal intensity in the presence of noise, is a common phenomenon. However, its underlying auditory mechanisms are unclear. METHOD: Participants produced speech before (baseline), during, and after exposure to systematically varied levels of speech-shaped noise. Lombard responses (i.e., elevated vocal intensity from baseline) were measured in an ecologically valid task (noise presented prior to voicing onset; Experiment 1) and in a task modeled after vocal motor learning paradigms (noise triggered by voice onset; Experiment 2). Loudness disc

Determinants of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields emitted by smartphones in French cellular telephony networks.

Smartphones are a major source of radiofrequency electromagnetic field exposure, yet real-life determinants of uplink emissions remain poorly characterised. We conducted the first epidemiological study of smartphone cellular network uplink emissions in a general population sample, recruiting 167 volunteers across three French cities in 2022-2023. Emissions were measured quasi-continuously for a week during everyday activities using the novel DEVIN exposimeter, while the XMobiSensePlus application simultaneously recorded sensor values and smartphone activities in the background. Determinants of

Exposure conditions control plastic degradation in marine environments: Evidence from UV, floating, and intertidal experiments.

Plastic debris entering marine environments undergoes progressive weathering that promotes fragmentation into microplastics, yet the relative influence of polymer type and environmental exposure pathways on degradation dynamics remains insufficiently quantified. This study experimentally evaluated the degradation of six common consumer plastics (PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP, and PS) under three environmentally relevant scenarios: controlled UV-A irradiation in seawater, buoyant exposure simulating floating ocean debris, and intertidal coastal deployment subject to tidal cycles. Over periods of thr

Changes in cyanobacterial growth and photosynthetic pigment under different conditions.

Today, cyanobacteria, as the first photosynthetic microorganisms, play an undeniable role in ecosystems and global markets. In this research, the biomass and photosynthetic pigment production under environmental and nutritional factors in Calothrix and Microchaete were investigated. Photoperiod did not influence biomass production, while both strains produced maximum biomass at a light intensity of 100 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Although 100 mM NaCl and 25 mM NaNO3 increased the biomass in both cyanobacteria, urea at 1 mM inhibited the growth of Calothrix, in contrast to Microchaete. On the other h

Urban radio-frequency electromagnetic field exposure in New York City.

This study investigates Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Field (RF-EMF) exposure across New York City's five boroughs. The RF-EMF exposure was measured in 39 bands across the 88 MHz to 5.925 GHz frequency range using an exposimeter fixed in a backpack that was worn during walks along 38 predetermined paths in various representative urban environments of the city from September 2024 to May 2025. We calculated the summary statistics (minimum, p25, arithmetic mean, geometric mean, median, p25, p50, p75, p90, standard deviation) in units of electric field strength (V/m) and compared RF-EMF exposure

Ultraviolet Sensing-Guided Biomedical Systems: From Label-Free Imaging to Dosimetry and Therapy Feedback.

Ultraviolet (UV) light is emerging as an important tool for biosensing, biomedical signal readout, and dose monitoring because of its strong and selective interactions with nucleic acids, proteins, and other biological components. This review summarizes recent progress in UV sensing-guided biomedical systems, with emphasis on three interconnected directions: label-free and surface-weighted imaging, wearable and embedded UV dosimetry, and sensor-assisted therapeutic guidance. Representative examples include ultraviolet photoacoustic microscopy (UV-PAM) for label-free nuclear imaging, microscopy

Systematic review of microorganism disinfection performance by chemical and ultraviolet light water treatment methods.

Safe drinking water is critical for public health, yet microbial contamination remains a significant global challenge. We conducted a systematic review to update World Health Organization guidance on water disinfection technologies by synthesizing peer-reviewed literature from 1997 to 2021 on the performance of free chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, and ultraviolet (UV) light against bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed log10 reduction values (LRVs) and contact times (Ct) or fluence (for UV) from laboratory and field studies. We included studies from multi

Targeted Inhibition of Bacterial Repair by Nitrite-Derived Reactive Nitrogen Species Improves UVC Disinfection Efficiency.

UVC irradiation is widely used for disinfection, yet its efficacy is sometimes compromised by bacterial photoreactivation and dark repair. This study demonstrates that pre-exposure to UVA irradiation in the presence of environmentally relevant nitrite (NO2-) significantly suppresses both repair pathways during subsequent UVC treatment. At 1.0 mg-N L-1 NO2- and 612 mJ cm-2 UVA, sequential (UVA-UVC)/NO2- treatment reduced photoreactivation and dark repair to less than 6% and 3%, respectively. This inhibition was consistent across four representative waterborne bacteria, including Gram-negative (

Toxicokinetic Differences between Dermal and Oral Exposure to Ultraviolet Absorbers: Exploring Pathway-Specific Biomarkers.

Ultraviolet absorbers (UVAs) are a group of emerging contaminants with high production volumes. Their applications include but are not limited to sunscreens and food contact materials. Dermal and oral exposures are generally regarded as the main human exposure pathways, but pathway-specific toxicokinetics of UVAs are still unclear. Here, major metabolites and pathway-specific toxicokinetics of five typical UVAs were investigated using in vitro experiments, animal administration experiments, and consecutively collected 24 h human urine. Unlike other UVAs, 2-ethylhexyl p-methoxycinnamate (EHMC)

Evolution of the photosensitized production of singlet oxygen by aqueous extracts of biomass-burning aerosol.

Biomass-burning aerosol (BBA) is emitted by combustion through wildfires and prescribed burns. As BBA contains chromophoric brown carbon, this aerosol increases radiative forcing and drives particle-phase photochemistry such as generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) via photosensitization. By generating 1O2, BBA could contribute to oxidation of atmospheric aerosol constituents and facilitate photobleaching of its brown carbon. Little is known regarding the quantum yield for 1O2 production in the aqueous dissolved fraction of BBA, or the variability of 1O2 production between biomass fuel types and

Antagonistic effects of epibiota on chronic experimental Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) exposure in Cymodocea nodosa.

Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) is an emerging anthropogenic stressor in coastal ecosystems, particularly in urbanised areas. ALAN can disrupt the natural diel cycles of light-sensitive foundation species, such as seagrasses, altering key physiological processes. Although ALAN can affect marine primary producers, its effects on seagrasses under realistic field conditions and in interaction with other stressors remain poorly understood. In urbanised coastal systems ALAN frequently co-occurs alongside nutrient enrichment and consequent epibiotic accumulation, which could mediate seagrass respon

The yellow-in-the-dark chIL Chlamydomonas mutant as a model for time-resolved chloroplast biogenesis and retrograde signaling.

Understanding chloroplast biogenesis is key given the importance of photosynthesis and chloroplast metabolism. Chloroplast assembly has been extensively studied in angiosperms, where the main hallmarks have been established, including the need for nuclear and plastid genome coordination through anterograde and retrograde signals. However, recent works in other photosynthetic lineages have revealed both divergent and conserved regulators. These differences likely represent adaptive strategies that emerged during the evolution of the green lineage and highlight the need for evolutionary studies

Hybrid sulfonated polyethersulfone films enabling efficient methylene blue adsorption and UV-assisted photocatalytic regeneration.

Synthetic dyes represent a major environmental concern because of their toxicity, persistence and resistance to biodegradation. Among them, methylene blue (MB) is widely used as cationic dye and may pose risks to aquatic ecosystems when improperly discharged. In this work, sulfonated polyethersulfone (sPES)-based nanocomposite films incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles, multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and covalently linked MWCNTs-TiO2 nanohybrid fillers were prepared and evaluated for MB removal from water and UV-assisted regeneration. Determinants of intensive care unit light exposure: an observational cohort study of patient, temporal, and structural factors.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with critical illness experience profound circadian disruption, driven in part by atypical light exposure in the intensive care unit (ICU). While prior studies characterize ICU light, the extent to which in patient, temporal, and structural factors determine light intensity remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted an observational cohort study of light intensity in the rooms of patients admitted to one of thirteen medical ICU (MICU) rooms equipped with continuous light monitoring between February 2021 and 2022. Patients were included if they remained in the monitored MICU

Imaging cell phone radiation in tissue mimics with hyperpolarized low-field MRI.

Radiation from cell phones and cellular devices is ubiquitous and, in the microwave frequency bands used, human tissue is a highly absorbing complex electromagnetic material. Safety guidelines are currently based on heating and specific absorption rate using limited measurement and modeling techniques. Here, we present a method to image microwave electromagnetic fields from cellular device radiation in tissue mimics using hyperpolarized low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Resonant absorption of microwave radiation in free radicals added to the tissue mimics, transfers polarization to t

Efficacy of cycled environmental light and noise during initial hospitalisation for improved cognitive outcomes at 2 years in infants born extremely or very preterm: study protocol for the prospective, randomised, open, blinded endpoint controlled multicentre CIRCA DIEM trial.

INTRODUCTION: Very preterm infants (<32 weeks gestation) have an undeveloped primary endogenous circadian rhythm and are deprived abruptly of vital maternal circadian inputs after delivery. Postnatal care in neonatal intensive care units is characterised by constant levels of lighting and noise. Stress arising from disrupted cues for circadian rhythmicity likely disrupts development of coordinated circadian rhythms critical for neurogenesis, organ growth and development. We hypothesise that cycled environmental light and noise commenced soon after birth and continued until discharge home will
