Establishment of an Efficient High-Yield Sporulation Protocol for Mycocentrospora acerina Causing Leaf Blight of Asarum heterotropoides var. mandshuricum.

Mycocentrospora acerina is responsible for inducing severe leaf blight on Asarum heterotropoides. However, its poor sporulation under standard culture conditions significantly limits research on pathogenicity and disease management. This study aimed to develop an efficient high-yield and reproducible sporulation protocol by optimizing cultural conditions and nutritional factors. The results indicate that near-ultraviolet (near-UV) light serves as a critical inducer of sporulation for M. acerina. In contrast to the standard culture on potato dextrose agar medium at 20°C, where the pathogen fail

Radiofrequency exposure to LTE signal does not alter cancer-related endpoints in human neuroblastoma cell model either alone, or co-exposed to menadione or Wi-Fi signal.

Despite the long-term evolution (LTE) signal, also known as fourth generation (4G) technology, is the most employed and widely deployed system for telecommunications, only a few in vitro studies are devoted to assessing the biological effects related to exposure to LTE alone and in combination with other agents. To the best of our knowledge, the effect of simultaneous exposure to 4G LTE with other frequencies/signals has not been evaluated in any of these studies. In the present study we investigated the non-thermal carcinogenic effect of LTE signal under a co-exposure realistic scenario. Huma

Genotype-Encoded UV Sensitivity in iPSC-Derived Human Melanocytes Reveals MX2 as a Physiological Amplifier of p53/p38-Mediated DNA Damage Signaling.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation induces DNA damage and oxidative stress in melanocytes, shaping pigmentation phenotypes and elevating photocarcinogenesis risk. Human models that capture donor-linked genetic determinants of UV sensitivity remain limited. Here, we establish a genotype-informed UV response model using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived melanocytes from donors carrying defined MC1R variants. Differentiated cells recapitulated melanocytic morphology, marker expression, and pigmentation consistent with donor sun-sensitivity traits. Following narrowband UVB exposure, melanocyte

Implementation of Sterilization and Disinfection Protocols for Potentiometric Microneedle Sensors: A Requirement for a Safety Assertion.

Microneedle (MN) sensors represent a promising technology for disease surveillance. For their application in long-term animal studies and preclinical research, they must exhibit both analytical reliability and biosafety, including the elimination of microorganisms capable of inducing infection. Nonetheless, MNs' compatibility with conventional sterilization and disinfection methods remains largely unexplored. Accordingly, we introduce the first systematic evaluation of the compatibility of potentiometric MN sensors with sterilization and high-level disinfection protocols widely available in la

Profiling spatiotemporal contexts associated with compound exposure disadvantages in noise and greenery: A study using mobile sensors and explainable machine learning.

Although exposures to noise or greenery in isolation have been widely studied, limited research has explored the nonlinear associations between spatiotemporal contexts and compound disadvantages from a daily mobility perspective. Drawing on data from mobile sensors, GPS, satellite imagery, points of interest, and activity diaries, this study measures real-time noise and greenery exposures along relevant spatiotemporal contexts. Methodologically, daily mobility is delineated through a spatiotemporal threshold approach, modeling them as stay and move event sequences that underpin the development

Reduce noise: Enhance health equity-An AAN Consensus Paper.

A growing body of epidemiological studies shows that noise increases the risk for broad-ranging physiological and psychological illnesses. According to the World Health Organization, at least 1.6 million healthy years of life are lost annually in Western Europe due to traffic noise alone. Scholars from selected Expert Panels of the American Academy of Nursing convened to update the information regarding the effects of environmental noise on health disparities, physiological changes in the human body and in animals, and environmental justice issues, and to inform the public and policy makers' e

Transcriptomic Analysis of Salmonella Typhimurium After Exposure to Blue Light.

Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) at 405 nm reduces the viability of foodborne pathogens, including Salmonella. Visible light, including blue light, can kill bacteria by a mechanism that involves reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated after excitation of endogenous photosensitizers. However, the molecular response of Salmonella to aBL is largely unknown. This study was undertaken to characterize differential gene expression in Salmonella Typhimurium strain 14028s following sublethal exposure to 405 nm aBL and to evaluate the phenotypic relevance of selected upregulated genes. Cell suspensions we

Species-specific impacts of radiofrequency exposure on the structural and morphological characteristics of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus eggs.

BACKGROUND: Radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) are integral to wireless communication systems, and their potential biological impacts on non-target organisms, such as mosquitoes, remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the effects of RF exposure on the structural and morphological characteristics of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus eggs, two major vectors of dengue and other arboviral diseases, under controlled experimental conditions. METHODS: Laboratory and field strain eggs of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus were exposed to RF at frequencies of 900 MHz and 1

Influence of artificial light at night (ALAN) on the growth of two marine macroalgae, Gracilaria coronopifolia and Caulerpa lentillifera, in a tropical system.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) has increased worldwide along urbanised coastlines, yet the effects on marine photoautotrophs remain poorly understood. Macroalgae are habitat-forming species that provide essential ecosystem services in coastal environments and any factor impairing their performance may have far-reaching ecological consequences. This study investigated the effects of ALAN on growth rate, oxygen evolution, and palatability in two tropical macroalgae, Gracilaria coronopifolia (Rhodophyta) and Caulerpa lentillifera (Chlorophyta), from Penang, Malaysia. Samples were maintained und

Optimising thermal and irradiance conditions for enhanced oxygen production in Tetradesmus bajacalifornicus.

This work evaluated the effect of culture temperature and irradiance on oxygen production rate and biomass productivity of the microalga Tetradesmus bajacalifornicus, an understudied species with potential for different biotechnological applications. The optimal conditions to increase oxygen productivity were determined using a photorespirometer using a response surface methodology. The highest oxygen production rate (250.0 mg O₂·g⁻¹·h⁻¹) was achieved at 38.1 °C and 500 µmol photons·m⁻²·s⁻¹, a value comparable to other high-performance strains. However, continuous exposure to 38.1 °C for exten

Auditory and non-auditory effects of noise on health: updated evidence and future directions.

Noise is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, prevalent in many residential, occupational, and recreational settings, posing an unmet challenge and injustice that can cause auditory and non-auditory health effects. In Europe alone, 112 million people - more than 20% of the population - are exposed to noise levels that exceed thresholds considered unhealthy. Auditory effects of exposure, including declines in hearing function and associated underlying noise-induced injury, have been extensively documented. Affecting many millions worldwide, auditory consequences of noise exposure interfere wit

Sociodemographic Factors and Mental Distress as Determinants of Perceived Noise Pollution in Four European Regions.

BACKGROUND: Perceived environmental noise, in addition to objective sound levels, influences stress, sleep, and other health risks. This study examined sociodemographic and mental-distress factors associated with four aspects of noise perception: perceived noise pollution level, noise-related health risk perception, annoyance, and noise sensitivity. METHODS: A population-based online survey of 4179 adults was conducted in Estonia, the Oresund area (Sweden/Denmark), Catalonia (Spain), and Kosovo. Participants rated aspects of noise perception on five-point scales. Predictors included region, a

Context-dependent responses of bats to artificial light at night in urban and natural woodlands.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is a pervasive environmental pollutant that disrupts circadian rhythms, behaviour, and ecological interactions across taxa. Bats are particularly vulnerable, as illumination increases perceived predation risk and interferes with nocturnal foraging. While the spatial and spectral effects of ALAN have been documented, the extent to which prior exposure to ALAN modulates behavioural responses remains unclear. We experimentally tested whether bat responses to a novel lighting event differ between chronically illuminated and naturally dark environments. Using a pair

Evaluation of the potential toxicity of microplastics released from soft beverages packaging under different storage conditions.

Microplastics (MPs), as an emerging pollutant, have drawn much attention due to the possibility that they may be released from certain food packaging and pose potential risks to human health. This study systematically investigated the effects of three storage temperature, mechanical agitation, and light exposure on the release behavior of MPs from commercially soft beverages (soda water, cola, and mineral water), and assessed their toxicity in vitro and in vivo. Light exposure was identified as the most critical factor promoting MP release, with the highest abundance reaching 92.79 ± 7.53 μg/g

Synergistic photodynamic antimicrobial therapy with silver nanoparticle activated by UV irradiation and 405 nm laser diode against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

This study investigates the antibacterial properties of Moringa oleifera green-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-MO) against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) when combined with UV radiation and a blue laser set at 405 nm. Exposure to both light treatments increased the antibacterial activity of AgNPs-MO at higher concentrations. The results indicate that photosensitizers generated from Moringa oleifera help photodynamic antimicrobial treatment work better and provide a more environmentally friendly way to manage infections. A control group (T0) was not sub

Wind turbine proximity and health: Longitudinal evidence from US households.

Rapid growth of wind energy plays a key role in global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, yet public concerns persist about its potential health effects, particularly through noise exposure. While some studies and media reports suggest that wind turbines may contribute to sleep disturbances, anxiety, and even suicide, existing evidence remains limited and inconclusive. This study combines geolocated data on turbines from the US Wind Turbine Database with longitudinal survey data on over 120,000 households (2011-2023) and consumer purchasing records to assess whether proximity to wind turbines

Skin Cancer: Screening and Prevention.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Basal cell carcinoma, the leading type of skin cancer across all racial and ethnic groups, is usually slow growing and curable. Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma accounts for more skin cancers in individuals with darker skin tones. Cutaneous melanoma is less common but potentially lethal in later stages. Patients with darker skin tones may have melanoma diagnosed at later stages, contributing to worse outcomes. Exposure to UV radiation is the primary risk factor for developing skin cancer. The US Preventive Services Task Force found i

Using sound to detect Formica rufa behavioural changes to a common pesticide.

Soil-dwelling insects may be at particularly high risk of exposure to pesticides because soils are a major recipient of these chemicals. Still, we lack non-invasive techniques to detect in situ responses of soil macrofauna to pesticides and other contaminants. Here, we test if sound recordings can reveal sub-lethal behavioural shifts in ant colonies caused by a neonicotinoid (imidacloprid). We demonstrate that an acoustic variable can detect pesticide-induced shifts in outdoor behaviours (increased activity) of red wood ants (Formica rufa). This behaviour shift was observed at environmentally
