BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of death, and the majority of this burden can be attributed to modifiable risk factors. Although surveys show that these risk factors are prevalent in Afghanistan, no study has used Global Burden of Disease (GBD) methodology to describe their contribution to IHD mortality. The study examined trends (1999-2023) in 14 selected behavioral, dietary, and metabolic risk factors for IHD mortality using the GBD 2023 estimates.
METHODOLOGY: This retrospective analysis used GBD 2023 estimates of deaths from IHD in Afghanistan attributable to

The health consequences associated with exercising in polluted air are not fully understood. Therefore, we synthesized controlled trials that compared exercise performed under higher air-pollution exposure with a corresponding lower-exposure condition (e.g., filtered air or a lower concentration) in healthy participants, and explored potential effect modifiers. We searched PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus for studies published between 2000 and 2024, and included 35 eligible controlled trials. Risk of bias was assessed using RoB 2 for randomized c

PURPOSE: To determine whether short-term exposure to ambient air pollution adversely impacts the effectiveness of CPAP therapy in patients with diagnosed Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study of 185 patients with diagnosed OSA using CPAP therapy, we analyzed the associations between daily levels of Particulate Matter (PM2.5), PM10, Black Carbon (BC) and Nitric Oxide (NO₂) and three primary outcomes: Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) usage duration (minutes/night), AHI (events/hour) and mask leakage. Distributed lag non-linear models were used to asse

AIMS: Particulate matter ≤2.5μm (PM2.5) air pollution is a leading global environmental risk factor. We investigated the impact of PM2.5 on cardiovascular risk with lifetime genetic predisposition to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and systolic blood pressure (SBP).
METHODS: We conducted a Mendelian Randomization (MR) study of participants from the UK Biobank study (n = 412,446) over 13.85 years. Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS) for LDL-C and SBP were used as instrument variables to estimate association and causal effects with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). The interaction

This study examines the impact of Diwali festivities on air quality and public health across 14 cities in the Indo-Gangetic Basin (IGB), integrating ground-based monitoring, satellite data, and meteorological analysis. PM₂.₅ and PM₁₀ levels exceeded national standards by 3-10 times during Diwali relative to CPCB and WHO 24-hour guidelines, respectively. Delhi witnessing a 19% rise in PM₂.₅ during the festival and post-Diwali biomass burning driving PM₂.₅ spikes exceeding 250 µg m⁻³ in Hisar. Gaseous pollutants, including SO₂ and NO₂, surged sharply due to firecracker emissions, while satellite

BACKGROUND: Wildland fires are a significant source of pollution that can cause sudden changes in ground-level ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5), an exposure that has been associated with gestational blood pressure increases. However, estimating the health risks specific to wildland fire smoke PM2.5 is often encumbered by limitations to smoke plume modeling.
METHODS: We utilized a novel approach to estimate and characterize wildland fire smoke PM2.5 in Reno, Nevada, USA, an area prone to seasonal smoke from wildland fires. Daily, 24-h averaged, plume-specific wildland fire smoke PM2.5 c

PURPOSE: Ischemic stroke remains a leading cause of death and disability worldwide, with women aged ≥55 years, representing a presumed postmenopausal population, constituting a particularly vulnerable group due to physiological changes associated with menopause. However, comprehensive analyses specifically characterizing the global burden, temporal trends, and risk factor profiles in this group are lacking.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 (GBD 2021), we analyzed disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and deaths. Temporal trends were assessed using

Chiang Mai, Thailand, experiences seasonal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution associated with metabolic diseases, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This prospective observational study compared plasma metabolomes of 25 healthy adults in Samoeng District, a highly affected area, between low and high PM2.5 exposure seasons using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy. Twenty-six metabolites differentiating haze and non-haze seasons were identified using PLS-DA (VIP > 1.5). During the haze season, 11 were elevated, whereas 15 were decreased. Among the elevated

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of global mortality, and the burden is rising fastest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Conventional risk calculators, such as Framingham and Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE), incorporate age, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and smoking, yet they underperform in populations that differ from their derivation cohorts and leave substantial residual risk unexplained. This narrative review evaluates traditional risk factors alongside emerging tools, including coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring, polygenic risk sco

Between 2013 and 2022, air pollution exposure caused over one million deaths annually in China, and climate change may further increase such exposure. Here we apply time series and causal inference models to quantify the changes in CO, NO2, O3, SO2, PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations and the relative impacts on all-cause deaths (ACD) in 2843 regions under climate change. We show extreme high temperature and drought increased by 2 and 3 days on average annually in China, whereas extreme precipitation and low temperature decreased by 2 days. In addition to the national upward trend in O3 (average ann

Ozone is an urban air pollutant known to cause lung injury and altered function. Using established models of acute (0.8 ppm, 3 h) and episodic (1.5 ppm, 2 h, 2 times/wk, 6 wk) inhalation exposure, we observed distinct structural changes in the lung; whereas acutely, ozone primarily disrupts the bronchiolar epithelial barrier, episodic exposure causes airway remodeling. Herein we examined how these responses altered pulmonary function. A SCIREQ small animal ventilator was used to assess lung function; impedance was used to conditionally model resistance and elastance. Episodic, but not acute oz

Air pollution by microplastics (MPs) is an increasingly concerning environmental issue, but the presence of MPs in the atmosphere and its potential health risks has not been studied in Greater Cairo. The sites were therefore selected during the winter season from the north to the south of the Cairo metropolitan area, representing urban and residential/industrial areas in terms of population, traffic, and industrial pressure. This was achieved through a combination of quantitative MP detection, mathematical modeling, and a risk assessment approach based on total suspended particulate matter (TS

People who visit high-altitude for research and development work, pilgrimage, recreational purposes and deployments are exposed to different environmental conditions such as low temperature and atmospheric pressure, leading to hypoxia, high radiation, dry air, and non-availability of fresh food and vegetables. These environmental stressors have significant physiological effects on the human body. Among these challenges, hypobaric hypoxia at high-altitude affects aerobic metabolism and thereby reduces the supply of metabolic energy. Metabolic alterations may further lead to extreme environment

Trial evidence is lacking from real-world community setting regarding whether use of ventilation hood during cooking could reduce household air pollution exposure and bring health benefits. We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled intervention study of using ventilation hood during cooking at five economically underdeveloped villages in southwest China over an 8-month period, where wood remained the dominant cooking fuel. We assessed changes in personal 24-h PM2.5 exposure and indicators of cardiometabolic and pulmonary health pre- to post-intervention among 115 intervention and 60 control

Cerebrovascular disease, as represented by stroke, was identified as one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Although air pollution was widely documented to be associated with stroke, the underlying mechanism of such adverse effects remained largely unknown. Cardiovascular effects triggered by air pollution were regarded as the dominant contributor to stroke pathogenesis, indicating the interconnected pathological basis of cardio-cerebrovascular multimorbidity in driving acute cerebrovascular events. By adopting the adverse outcome pathway as a pivotal tool, this review summarized air po

Because of their excellent stability and photoelectric properties, perovskite single crystals have been widely applied in fields such as detection and photovoltaics. This study demonstrated a ligand-assisted gas pump method for perovskite crystallization, in which the influence of the pressure change rate on the morphology of perovskite crystals and the quality of ligand-assisted crystallization were investigated. CH3NH3PbBr3 single crystals were obtained via the gas pump method assisted with 3-(decyldimethylazaniumyl)propanesulfonate (DPSI) as the ligand for crystallization. With varying rate

INTRODUCTION: Retrospective data suggest association of high-altitude exposure and inflammatory bowel disease flares. Knowledge about underlying pathogenesis remains limited.
METHODS: This prospective interventional trial evaluated the effect of 3 hours hypobaric low-pressure chamber exposure on 11 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), 9 with ulcerative colitis (UC), and 10 controls.
RESULTS: Proportion of patients with clinical and endoscopic activity did not increase. However, 33.3% of patients with UC experienced a flare. More patients had calprotectin-based activity (>100 μg/g) after the i

BACKGROUND: Multiple effects of ultrafine particles (UFP) on human subjects are known but there is less knowledge of how relative exposure levels between ultrafine and fine particles as typically encountered in large cities affect lung function and cardiovascular parameters.
METHODS: Four sites with high/low levels of ultrafine particles and/or fine particles were selected in the city of Munich, Germany: control area (woodland), urban environment, heavy traffic site, biomass combustion (beech wood). In a randomized cross-over design, 26 young, healthy individuals were exposed at each site ove

BACKGROUND: Maternal hypertensive disorders (MHD) are major causes of maternal mortality and perinatal complications worldwide, and their disability burden has risen with pronounced geographic disparities. Under global warming, heat stress is increasingly implicated in dysregulated blood pressure during pregnancy, yet robust global-scale evidence remains limited.
METHODS: We combined age-standardized years lived with disability (AS-YLDs) from MHD for 204 countries (1990-2021) with wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT). Restricted cubic splines were used to characterize nonlinear WBGT-AS-YLDs asso

Rational: Patients with pulmonary vascular disease often reveal nocturnal hypoxemia and sleep apnea. We investigated whether exposure to high altitude worsens those conditions. Methods and Objectives: In a randomized controlled crossover trial, stable patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension or chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension without resting hypoxemia (arterial oxygen pressure, >8 kPa at low altitude) underwent respiratory polygraphy at 470 meters and during an overnight stay at 2,500 meters. Patients with severe hypoxemia (oxygen saturation as measured by pulse oximetry [Sp
