Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) endotracheal tube segments were exposed to a 5.0-W CO2 laser beam in the presence of different fractions of oxygen and either helium or nitrogen. Time from onset of exposure until ignition was recorded, and mean time to ignition (MTI) was calculated after 10 exposures with the same gas mixture. A second series was done with 40% oxygen in either nitrogen or helium and a laser intensity of 7.5, 10.0, or 12.5 W; a third with 40% oxygen, 60% helium, and 2% halothane and a 10.0-W laser beam; and a fourth with 40% oxygen and 60% helium and a 10.0-W laser beam directed at the

One-lung and two-lung high frequency ventilation (HFV) through a 2-mm internal diameter catheter was evaluated in 22 patients during endoscopic laser excision of stenotic lesions of larynx, trachea, and bronchi. High frequency ventilation at 80 to 250 breaths per minute using air during two-lung HFV and using air-oxygen at an inspired oxygen concentration of 25% during one-lung HFV maintained adequate alveolar ventilation and oxygenation in all patients. The use of HFV through a catheter allowed continuous control of ventilation and provided maximal surgical exposure for endoscopic laser surge

Evaluation of analytical methods employed for wet weight (live or preserved samples) of benthic macroinvertebrates reveals that centrifugation at 140 x gravity for one minute yields constant biomass estimates. Less relative centrifugal force increases chance of incomplete removal of body moisture and results in weighing error, while greater force may rupture fragile macroinvertebrates, such as mayflies. Duration of specimen exposure in ethanol, formalin, and formol (formaling-ethanol combinations) causes significant body weight loss with within 48 hr formalin and formol cause less body weight

The potential global atmospheric and climatic consequences of nuclear war are investigated using models previously developed to study the effects of volcanic eruptions. Although the results are necessarily imprecise due to wide range of possible scenaros and uncertainty in physical parameters, the most probable first-order effects are serious. Significant hemispherical attenuation of the solar radiation flux and subfreezing land temperatures may be caused by fine dust raised in high-yield nuclear surface bursts and by smoke from city and forest fires ignited by airbursts of all yields. For man

In vitro experiments were performed to test the flammability of endotracheal tubes in the presence of CO2 laser beams Two types of tubes (Rusch and Portex) were exposed to laser beams at 15 or 30 W intensity for varying periods of time oxygen environments of 25% or 60%. Red rubber Rusch tubes were significantly (p less than 0.01) more resistant to ignition than plastic Portex tubes at both higher energy exposures and greater durations of exposure. Aluminum tape wrapping significantly (p less than 0.01) retarded ignition of both types of tubes. In view of this, a clinical protocol was developed

Laboratory and room-scale experiments were conducted with natural and synthetic polymers: cotton, paper, wood, wool, acetate, acrylic, nylon, and urethane. Smoke and off-gases from single materials were generated in a dual-compartment 110-liter exposure chamber. Multicomponent, composite fuel loads were burned within a 100 m(3) facility subdivided into rooms. In chamber experiments, mortality depended on the amount of material burned, i.e., fuel consumption (FC). Conventional dose (FC)/mortality curves were obtained, and the amount of fuel required to produce 50% mortality (FC(50)) was calcula

The smoke toxicity of three carpets commonly available for use in commercial aircraft was determined by ignition in a specially designed smoke apparatus. Rats were exposed for 15 min to three different fuel loads, on a weight-to-volume basis. Evaluation was by mortality, time of useful function (TUF), and unconsciousness. No deaths were noted with carpets A or C at 64 mg/l or 128 mg/l fuel load concentration; at 256 mg/l, 42% mortality resulted from carpet A and 4.5% with carpet C. Exposure to carpet B resulted in a mortality of 4.3%, 72.5%, and 100% at the three concentrations. The TUF data a
