Tissue burns due to contact between a skin surface and highly conducting metallic media in the presence of inter-tissue boiling.

A numerical-based model was developed and implemented to determine the spatial and temporal temperature distributions within skin tissue resulting from thermal contact with a heated and high thermal conductivity metallic medium. In the presence of wet tissue, boiling is likely to occur, thereby affecting the probability of inducing burns. This investigation deals with how contact between a hot, highly conductive metallic material and skin gives rise to burns. In particular, the study focuses on the likelihood that metals typically used in cooking or industrial applications may cause burns. Ins

Chitosan‑g‑maleic acid for effective removal of copper and nickel ions from their solutions.

Pollution of the environment associated with discharging the toxic heavy metals in water makes us focus the light to solve this problem. In continuation of our efforts, we aim in this work to utilize the graft copolymer (chitosan‑g‑maleic acid) to purify water from copper and nickel ions. The graft copolymer has been synthesized using gamma radiation and the grafting conditions have been optimized by studying the influence of acetic acid concentration (0.5-10% V/V), monomer concentration (5-17.5% w/v), chitosan concentration (0.25-2.5% w/v) and absorbed dose (0.5-5 kGy). FT-IR and TGA have bee

High-Vacuum Particulate-Free Deposition of Wafer-Scale Mono-, Bi-, and Trilayer Molybdenum Disulfide with Superior Transport Properties.

Wafer-scale MoS2 growth at arbitrary integer layer number is demonstrated by a technique based on the decomposition of carbon disulfide on a hot molybdenum filament, which yields volatile MoS x precursors that precipitate onto a heated wafer substrate. Colorimetric control of the growth process allows precise targeting of any integer layer number. The method is inherently free of particulate contamination, uses inexpensive reactants without the pyrophoricity common to metal-organic precursors, and does not rely on particular gas-flow profiles. Raman mapping and photoluminescence mapping, as we

Assessment of the potential health risks of heavy metals in soils in a coastal industrial region of the Yangtze River Delta.

Soil heavy metal contamination is a serious environmental problem. Human beings may be directly exposed to heavy metals in soils through the inhalation of soil particles, dermal contact, and oral ingestion, which can seriously threaten health. This study assesses the health risks associated with heavy metals in soils by determining the concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg, As, Cu, Zn, and Ni) based on 2051 surface-soil samples collected from the southern Yangtze River Delta of China. The mean concentrations were higher than the corresponding background values in Zhejiang Provin

Uranium(VI) sorption complexes on silica in the presence of calcium and carbonate.

Uranium sorption on minerals and related solids depends to a large degree on its aqueous speciation. The present work attempts to understand the U(VI) sorption behavior on silica under environmentally relevant conditions, i.e. at neutral to weakly alkaline pH and in the presence of dissolved calcium and carbonate. Under these conditions, Ca(UO2)(CO3)32- and Ca2(UO2)(CO3)3(aq) complexes emerge as the dominant aqueous U(VI) species. The U(VI) sorption affinity was measured as a function of contact time, solution pH, and humic acid. The U(VI) sorption decreased with increase of pH and was not aff

Long-Term Stability of Oxide Nanowire Sensors via Heavily Doped Oxide Contact.

Long-term stability of a chemical sensor is an essential quality for long-term collection of data related to exhaled breath, environmental air, and other sources in the Internet of things (IoT) era. Although an oxide nanowire sensor has shown great potential as a chemical sensor, the long-term stability of sensitivity has not been realized yet due to electrical degradation under harsh sensing conditions. Here, we report a rational concept to accomplish long-term electrical stability of metal oxide nanowire sensors via introduction of a heavily doped metal oxide contact layer. Antimony-doped Sn

Impact of Nanosize on Supercapacitance: Study of 1D Nanorods and 2D Thin-Films of Nickel Oxide.

We synthesized unique one-dimensional (1D) nanorods and two-dimensional (2D) thin-films of NiO on indium-tin-oxide thin-films using a hot-filament metal-oxide vapor deposition technique. The 1D nanorods have an average width and length of ∼100 and ∼500 nm, respectively, and the densely packed 2D thin-films have an average thickness of ∼500 nm. The 1D nanorods perform as parallel units for charge storing. However, the 2D thin-films act as one single unit for charge storing. The 2D thin-films possess a high specific capacitance of ∼746 F/g compared to 1D nanorods (∼230 F/g) using galvanostatic c

Hot-Press-Assisted Adhesions between Polyimide Films and Titanium Plates Utilizing Coating Layers of Silane Coupling Agents.

The development of low material-consuming adhesion techniques for different kinds of materials such as polymers and metals is important for the realization of sustainable societies. This study demonstrates that coating layers, expected to be formed as self-assembled monolayers, of silane coupling agents can act as adhesion layers at the polymer film-metal plate interfaces. Polyimide films were alkaline hydrolyzed to generate carboxy groups on their surfaces, whereas titanium plate surfaces were treated with the aminosilanes to form their coating layers thereon. These modified surfaces were pla

Quantifying the evolution of flow boiling bubbles by statistical testing and image analysis: toward a general model.

A new index, the estimate of the error variance, which can be used to quantify the evolution of the flow patterns when multiphase components or tracers are difficultly distinguishable, was proposed. The homogeneity degree of the luminance space distribution behind the viewing windows in the direct contact boiling heat transfer process was explored. With image analysis and a linear statistical model, the F-test of the statistical analysis was used to test whether the light was uniform, and a non-linear method was used to determine the direction and position of a fixed source light. The experime

The thermal probe test: A novel behavioral assay to quantify thermal paw withdrawal thresholds in mice.

Rodent models are frequently used to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of pain and to develop novel analgesics. Robust behavioral assays that quantify nociceptive responses to different sensory modalities, such has heat, are therefore needed. Here, we describe a novel behavioral assay to quantify thermal paw withdrawal thresholds in mice, called the thermal probe test, and compared it with other methods commonly used to measure heat thresholds, namely the Hargreaves test and the dynamic and conventional hot plate tests. In the thermal probe test, a slightly rounded 2.5 mm d

Tuning apparent friction coefficient by controlled patterning bulk metallic glasses surfaces.

Micro-honeycomb structures with various pitches between adjacent cells were hot-embossed on Zr35Ti30Cu8.25Be26.75 bulk metallic glass surface. The effect of pitch geometry on the frictional behavior of metallic glass surface was systematically investigated. The results revealed that all textured metallic glass surfaces show a reduction in friction coefficient compared to smooth surface. More intriguingly, the friction coefficient first decreased and then increased gradually with increasing pitches. Such unique behavior can be understood fundamentally from the perspective of competing effects b

Copper Nanowires: A Substitute for Noble Metals to Enhance Photocatalytic H2 Generation.

Microwave-assisted hydrothermal approach was developed as a general strategy to decorate copper nanowires (CuNWs) with nanorods (NRs) or nanoparticles (NPs) of metal oxides, metal sulfides, and metal organic frameworks (MOFs). The microwave irradiation induced local "super hot" dots generated on the CuNWs surface, which initiated the adsorption and chemical reactions of the metal ions, accompanied by the growth and assembly of NPs building blocks along the metal nanowires' surfaces. This solution-processed approach enables the NRs (NPs) @CuNWs hybrid structure to exhibit three unique character

Surface-Heating Algorithm for Water at Nanoscale.

A novel surface-heating algorithm for water is developed for molecular dynamics simulations. The validated algorithm can simulate the transient behavior of the evaporation of water when heated from a surface, which has been lacking in the literature. In this work, the algorithm is used to study the evaporation of water droplets on a platinum surface at different temperatures. The resulting contact angles of the droplets are compared to existing theoretical, numerical, and experimental studies. The evaporation profile along the droplet's radius and height is deduced along with the temperature g

Pulsed Near-IR Photoresponse in a Bi-metal Contacted Graphene Photodetector.

We use an ultra-fast near-infrared pulse coincidence technique to study the time, temperature, and power dependence of the photoresponse of a bi-metal contacted graphene photodetector. We observe two components of the photovoltage signal. One component is gate-voltage dependent, linear in power at room temperature and sub-linear at low temperature-consistent with the hot-electron photothermoelectric effect due to absorption in the graphene. The power dependence is consistent with supercollision-dominated cooling in graphene. The other component is gate-voltage independent and linear in tempera

Heat and radiofrequency plasma glow discharge pretreatment of a titanium alloy promote bone formation and osseointegration.

Orthopedic and dental implants manifest increased failure rates when inserted into low density bone. We determined whether chemical pretreatments of a titanium alloy implant material stimulated new bone formation to increase osseointegration in vivo in trabecular bone using a rat model. Titanium alloy rods were untreated or pretreated with heat (600°C) or radiofrequency plasma glow discharge (RFGD). The rods were then coated with the extracellular matrix protein fibronectin (1 nM) or left uncoated and surgically implanted into the rat femoral medullary cavity. Animals were euthanized 3 or 6 we

Scalable preparation of ultrathin silica-coated Ag nanoparticles for SERS application.

Silica-coated Ag nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2 NPs) have been successfully prepared by a scalable flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) technique with production rate up to 4 g/h in laboratory-scale. The ultrathin SiO2 shell, with a thickness 1 nm, not only effectively avoids the intersintering of Ag nanoparticles core at the high temperature, but also serves as a protective layer of the SERS-active nanostructure. The silica-coated Ag nanoparticles form agglomerates in the large temperature gradient zone, which with several nanometers gaps from each other but not contact. Such an intriguing feature can result
