Quantifying the spatiotemporal associations of flooding on mental health using telehealth call data.

Floods have increased in both frequency and severity in recent decades. National surveys within England have linked flooding to elevated anxiety, depression, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This study analyses daily telephone helpline calls related to mental health problems to assess the spatiotemporal patterns of flood risk and the 2015/2016 winter floods. Spatial analysis categorised postcode districts by flood risk (High, Medium, Low, Very Low) and proximity (Flood, <1 km, 1-5 km, 5-10 km). Interrupted time series and generalised linear models evaluated trends, adjusting for conf

A hybrid metaheuristic algorithm with machine learning for detecting denial-of-service attacks in wireless sensor networks.

Denial-of-service (DoS) attacks pose a major threat to various kinds of computer networks. There are several kinds of networks that are victims of DoS attacks, one of them being the wireless sensor network (WSN). The main objective of this work is to detect such attacks in wireless sensor networks. These networks are susceptible to intrusion attacks because of their fragile defense mechanisms in unattended environments. Thus, a suitable intrusion detection system must be created to optimally detect DoS attacks and prevent them. This work proposes a hybrid technique called Grasshopper Optimizat

A disaster in the disaster: a study on post-traumatic stress symptoms among flood relief workers in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan’s 2025 monsoon floods created extreme humanitarian demands, exposing frontline relief workers to sustained trauma, hazardous conditions, and challenging safety resources. While post-traumatic stress among disaster survivors in Pakistan is documented, little evidence exists regarding responders. This study assessed post-traumatic stress symptoms among flood-relief workers and examined factors associated with elevated Impact of Event Scale–Revised (IES-R) scores. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical survey was conducted in September to October 2025 among verified frontline

Harnessing the Hybrid Intelligence of Crowd and Artificial Intelligence in Group Decision Making for Uncertain Disaster Response.

Crowdsourcing is now widely used in disaster management. However, restricted access to social media of vulnerable people in poor areas will pose a risk of selective bias. This study presents a framework to harness the hybrid intelligence of crowd and artificial intelligence (AI) in group decision-making problems to improve the inclusiveness of disaster response decisions. First, crowdsourced data are utilized to extract immediate needs, while an AI algorithm predicts broader population requirements based on area vulnerability features. To improve compassion, the degree of human suffering is es

A multi-scale ensemble machine learning framework for assessing human-elephant conflict in the Brahmaputra flood plain.

Human-elephant conflict (HEC) is emerging as a growing challenge to biodiversity conservation and rural livelihoods in Asia. Assam's Brahmaputra Flood Plain (BFP)is an important stronghold of the Asian elephant, wherein this study aims to comprehensively analyse the spatio-temporal dynamics of human-elephant conflict BFP, between 2010 and 2024. Using a two-way conflict modelling framework, we examined both human victimization of elephants (EV-HI) and elephant victimization of humans (HV-EI), and integrated these perspectives to identify spatial intersections and temporal patterns of heightened

Race, nationality, and partisanship shape U.S. public support for climate disaster aid: Evidence from two survey experiments.

We examine how race, nationality, and political partisanship influence U.S. public support for climate-related disaster aid. Using two preregistered survey experiments (N = 7,511), we varied the race (Black/White) and nationality (U.S./Brazil or South Africa) of flood victims depicted in an artist's rendering of a fictional disaster. Respondents were significantly less supportive of aid to Global South victims than U.S. victims, with the gap largest among Republicans. Race effects were smaller and context-dependent: domestically, White Republicans expressed less generosity towards Black than W

Cumulative Recall Across Frequent Brief Assessments of Interpersonal Violence: Reliability and Validity.

Frequent brief assessments (FBAs) of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and victimization, as well as other related forms of interpersonal violence, might be preferable to typical survey assessments asking respondents to reflect over longer periods of time. In this article, we examine the extent to which FBAs of psychological and physical IPV, stalking, and nonconsensual sexual contact perpetration and victimization possessed convergent and lagged convergent validity with more typical, longer measures of the phenomena over a 6-month recall period. We also examined whether FBA-based m

Flood risk to population in Italy: a synoptic overview based on fatality data.

Floods continue to pose a threat to human life despite the major advances in managing flood risk. To quantitatively assess potential loss of life, we present a statistical approach to model societal flood risk from sparse, point information on fatal floods in Italy. At this end, the Zipf distribution and its parameters were estimated over a regular grid covering the national territory. Despite the difficulties in modelling sparse data, we tested the approach using a detailed record of 667 fatal floods at 652 different sites for 345 major or minor meteorological events during the 78-year period

Optimization, characterization and biological activity of siderophore produced by marine Streptomyces coelicolor.

Two Streptomyces spp. were isolated from open ocean waters of the Gulf of Mannar. Of the two isolates, one was identified as Streptomyces coelicolor through conventional and molecular approaches, and it was found to produce a siderophore. Characterization revealed the siderophore to be of trihydroxamate type with hexadentate iron-binding capacity. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of aromatic rings with C-O and C = C stretching, while 1H and 13C NMR together with mass spectrometry confirmed the hydroxamate nature and identified the siderophore as ferrioxamine. A narrow shift in λ max indica

A Multi-Responsive Film from Polymerizable Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Microcapsules for Advanced Anti-Counterfeiting.

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) can be encapsulated within liquid crystal microcapsules (CLCMs) via ultrasonic emulsification, and this microcapsule structure offers advantages in liquid crystal (LC) orientation control and stability. However, CLCMs still face challenges in multiple stimulus responsiveness. In this study, polymerizable LC monomers are introduced as the core filler of CLCMs and polymerized under UV irradiation to form polymer networks. As a result, the structural color of the film changes, and the patterned coloration of the final prepared film gradually disappears upon expo

Versatile Janus dressing with radiative cooling and exudate control for outdoor wound management.

Prolonged outdoor exposure to sunlight and infrared radiation induces localized wound overheating and excessive exudation, aggravating inflammation and infection while significantly impeding healing. Regrettably, most existing wound dressings lack the essential functionalities to facilitate healing under such conditions. To address this limitation, we develop a multifunctional Janus dressing by continuous electrospinning, incorporating PVDF-b-PTFE, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and TiO2 nanoparticles. The synergistic interaction among these components endows the dressing with a solar reflectivity of 9
