Ten patients with a history of photosensitivity and of a rash showed abnormal reactions to long-wave UVR. The rash occurred particularly in areas exposed to light, though other areas were occasionally involved. The development of the rash could in all patients be related to contact with lichens and although exposure to sunlight usually led to an aggravation of symptoms, some patients, particularly forestry workers, showed exacerbations even during the winter. In the 12 months following the Brisbane flood of 1974, 234 flooded families (695 persons) and 163 non-flooded families (507 persons) were interviewed to ascertain changes in health status. One hundred and 18 children with various clinical types of vitiligo, were treated with oral trimethylpsoralen (Trisoralen, P. B. Elder Co.) followed by exposure to sunlight or an artificial ultraviolet radiation source. In 61 of the adult patients, more than 80% of the vitiliginous areas became repigmented, 18 patients re-pigmented 50-80%, 13 repigmented less than 50% and 8 patients failed to repigment at all. The clinical and laboratory findings in 32 patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria as well as a review of the pertinent literature on this relatively recently described form of porphyria are presented. Vitamin-D deficiency is not as rare in Jamaica as previously believed. 9 children with vitamin-D deficiency rickets have been seen at the University Hospital of the West Indies during the past 5 years. All were over 3 years of age at time of presentation. Both dietary deficiency of vitamin D and lack of exposure to sunlight seem to be important causes. Children living in rural Jamaica seem to be more susceptible to the disease than those living in a city, due perhaps to more prolonged breast feeding and lack of fortified milk feeds on weaning.

To assess the effect of religious dietary practices and social customs on the vitamin D status of Asian immigrants, we kept records of the dietary intake and time spent out of doors of 81 Ugandan Asian men, women, and girls (9-19 years old). Sera were analysed for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OHD3), and 28% of the subjects were found to have levels below the lower limit of normal. The (vegetarian) Hindus had the lowest dietary intakes, least time out of doors, and lowest serum 25-OHD3. The authors present two cases of unsuccessful hanging which hat lead to a very severe neurological picture and especially the very rapid appearance of acute pulmonary edema resulting in a vertiable flooding of the alveoli. The victims, aged respectively 21 and 15 years, were free from any pre-existing cardiopathy. These cases of pulmonary edema, resistant to depletive therapy (bleeding, diuretics) and cardiotonic agents (Cedilanid) should only be jugulated after a one hour session of oxygen at 3 ATA with a baro-assisted respirator. Geese and ducks were photosensitized by the ingestion of Ammi majus seeds, and exposure to sunlight. Mydriasis was a characteristic clinical feature of this syndrome in both species. Histologically the iris of the affected birds showed vacuolisation and varying degrees of atrophy of the muscle of the sphincter pupillae. The effect of pilocarpine and physostigmine on the normal and mydriatic eyes was studied. The possible mode of action of photosensitization and the significance of these findings in the light of the use of psoralens in human medicine is discussed.

Urinary calcium and magnesium excretion was measured in two groups of soldiers leaving the temperate climate of the united Kingdom for service in the Persian Gulf. In one group urinary calcium levels and magnesium/calcium ratios were similar, ten days after arrival in the Gulf during the "cold season", to those found in the U.K. The other group went to the Gulf in the "hot season", and calcium excretion rose immediately to levels comparable with those found in the first group after eight months.
