LT and SOX9 expression are associated with gene sets that distinguish Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV)-positive and MCPyV-negative Merkel cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is an aggressive malignant neuroendocrine tumour. There are two subsets of MCC, one related to Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and the other to ultraviolet radiation (UVR). MCPyV-positive and MCPyV-negative MCCs have been considered to be different tumours, as the former harbour few DNA mutations and are not related to UVR, and the latter usually arise in sun-exposed areas and may be found in conjunction with other keratinocytic tumours, mostly squamous cell carcinomas. Two viral oncoproteins, large T antigen (LT; coded by MCPyV_gp3) and small T antigen

Q-switched 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser restores skin photoageing by activating autophagy by TGFβ1 and ITGB1.

Excessive ultraviolet B ray (UVB) exposure to sunlight results in skin photoageing. Our previous research showed that a Q-switched 1064 nm Nd: YAG laser can alleviate skin barrier damage through miR-24-3p. However, the role of autophagy in the laser treatment of skin photoageing is still unclear. This study aims to investigate whether autophagy is involved in the mechanism of Q-switched 1064 nm Nd: YAG in the treatment of skin ageing. In vitro, primary human dermal fibroblast (HDF) cells were irradiated with different doses of UVB to establish a cell model of skin photoageing. In vivo, SKH-1 h

Photoluminescence and thermoluminescence dosimetry properties of Ag/Y co-doped ZnO nanophosphor for radiation measurements.

This work explores the thermoluminescence (TL) and photoluminescence (PL) properties of Ag/Y co-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanophosphor. The proposed dosimeter was prepared by the coprecipitation method and sintered at temperatures from 400°C to 1000°C in an air atmosphere. Raman spectroscopy was studied to investigate the structural features of this composition. The new proposed dosimeter revealed two peaks at 150°C and 175°C with a small shoulder at high temperature (225°C). The PL spectrum showed strong green emissions between 500 to 550 nm. The Raman spectrum showed many bands related to the i

Blue light impairs the repair of UVB-induced pyrimidine dimers in a human skin model.

In recent years, interest is growing in the biological cutaneous effects of high-energy visible light (400-450 nm). In the present study, we explored the impact of blue light (BL) on the repair of pyrimidine dimers, the major class of premutagenic DNA damage induced by exposure to sunlight. We unambiguously demonstrate that the exposure of in vitro reconstructed human epidermis to environmentally relevant doses of BL strongly decreases the rate of repair of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and pyrimidine (6-4) pyrimidone photoproducts induced by a subsequent UVB irradiation. Using the highly sens

Exploring New Horizons for Wine Grapes: Modulating Functional Effects by Varying Harvest Timing and Solar Exposure.

Grenache (GN) and Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) are two traditional red grape varieties widely cultivated in the Mediterranean area and both late-ripening cultivars, which makes them less sensitive to global warming conditions and more stable to harvest timing. Although different studies have evaluated the final antioxidant properties of grapes and pomaces, few studies have explored the effect of sun exposure and harvest on the nutritional and antioxidant properties of these products. This study investigates the control of sunlight and ripening as tools to tailor nutritional and antioxidant properti

Early exposure to sunlight and allergic morbidity: The PARIS birth cohort.

The relationship between sunlight and allergies in children has received limited attention from researchers. We sought to explore how early exposure to solar radiation is associated with allergic morbidity within the PARIS birth cohort study. Our research dealt with children who attended at least one of two health checkups: at 18 months (n = 2012) and at 8-9 years (n = 1080). Early exposure to solar radiation was assessed using meteorological data (e.g., solar radiation, temperature, and relative humidity). Children with similar meteorological exposure trajectories were grouped by a longitudin

Interactions between methyl octabromo ether flame retardant and expanded polystyrene microplastics in the photoaging process.

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) plastic is widely used because of its low density and lightweight properties, enabling it to float on water and increase its exposure to sunlight. In this study, we simulated the photoaging process of flame retardant-added EPS (FR-EPS) and common original EPS (OR-EPS) microplastic (MP) particles with and without methyl octabromoether flame retardant (MOBE) in the laboratory to explore the effect of MOBE on the photodegradation of EPS. Results showed that MOBE accelerated size reduction and surface hole formation on the particles, hastening the shedding and replacemen

Preparation of bright yellow color sodium alginate solution.

Sodium alginate (SA) is a marine polysaccharide biomass material that is environmentally friendly and exhibits color-changing properties under certain conditions. In this study, we have discovered sodium alginate solution to be chromogenic under four conditions, namely alkali-chromogenic, thermo-chromogenic, force-chromogenic and photo-chromogenic. Under simple strong alkaline conditions, sodium alginate forms clusters of blue light-absorbing chromogenic aggregates, which exhibit a bright yellow color at a certain size. Under different temperature conditions, SA shows varying shades of yellow,

Insights into cyanobacterial blooms through the lens of omics.

Cyanobacteria are oxygen-producing photosynthetic bacteria that convert carbon dioxide into biomass upon exposure to sunlight. However, favorable conditions cause harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs), which are the dense accumulation of biomass at the water surface or subsurface, posing threats to freshwater ecosystems and human health. Understanding the mechanisms underlying cyanobacterial bloom formation is crucial for effective management. In this regard, recent advancements in omics technologies have provided valuable insights into HCBs, which have raised expectations to develop more effec
