Genitourinary tuberculosis manifests several years after infection with tuberculosis. It presents with fever, pyuria, weight loss, and loss of appetite. Urine cultures are typically sterile. Within the urinary system it presents with fibrosis and stricture formation. The renal manifestation involves granulomatous interstitial nephritis with or without chronic kidney disease. Renal pseudotumors are a very infrequent manifestation of tuberculosis, which can lead to unnecessary nephrectomies. This case report describes a patient with this odd manifestation of tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis remains a significant public health issue worldwide. In 2022, over 45 000 new tuberculosis cases were registered in Russia, corresponding to an incidence rate of 31.0 per 100 000 population. Among genitourinary tuberculosis, bladder involvement accounts for 10.6-52.3%. The clinical presentation of tuberculous cystitis mimics that of typical cystitis. Lack of specific symptoms, combined with insufficient clinical suspicion among phthisiatrists, often leads to delayed diagnosis and treatment, so that irreversible morphological changes have occurred in the bladder wall. This process

Issues of etiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostics of tuberculous bladder lesions were discussed in the first part of the review. The presence of a "small contracted" bladder, regardless of etiology, is an indication for surgical treatment, including tuberculous microcystis. The surgeons main task is to select the optimal surgical approach in each case. An ileal segment is considered the best material for urinary reservoir reconstruction. Supratrigonal cystectomy with augmentation and radical cystectomy with orthotopic reconstruction are the most common procedures for tuberculous microcystis. I

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis spondylitis, also known as Pott's disease, is a form of osteomyelitis that primarily affects the vertebral bodies and can lead to severe complications such as paravertebral abscesses, kyphosis, and degenerative spinal changes. Although it typically involves the skeletal system, contiguous spread to adjacent organs, such as the genitourinary tract, is rare.
METHODS: We report the case of a 64-year-old male with chronic back pain who underwent a renal protocol abdominopelvic CT scan following ultrasound findings of right kidney stasis.
RESULTS: The CT revealed obstruct

A patient in his early 60s with a long-standing history of scrotal swelling and recent onset of pain underwent high inguinal orchidectomy due to a suspected testicular malignancy. Tumour markers were normal, but histopathological examination revealed caseating granulomas, confirming tuberculous epididymo-orchitis. He was diagnosed with genitourinary tuberculosis and initiated on anti-tubercular therapy. The patient responded well to treatment with no recurrence. This case highlights the importance of considering tuberculosis in the differential diagnosis of testicular lesions and the critical

Genitourinary tuberculosis is a severe form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. The kidneys are the most commonly affected organs, followed by the epididymis, testicles, bladder, ureter and prostate. Notably, epididymal tuberculosis is one of the forms of genital tuberculosis presenting with specific clinical features, which may include epididymitis, orchid-epididymitis or hydrocele. We report the case of a patient with a hydrocele that revealed epididymal tuberculosis. Utilizing molecular biology techniques, a diagnostic test for epididymal tuberculosis was established. The patient was treated co

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health concern, and while primarily affecting the lungs, extrapulmonary manifestations such as genitourinary tubercular epididymitis are rare and diagnostically challenging. Accurate differentiation is crucial for appropriate treatment. This case study presents a 34-year-old man with left scrotal swelling, backache, and fever, highlighting the importance of considering TB in genitourinary conditions. High-resolution sonography revealed an edematous left testis with increased vascularity and hypoechoic nodules. Further imaging, including high-resolution comput

Female genital tuberculosis (FGTB) is a form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that predominantly affects women of reproductive age and is a significant cause of infertility in TB-endemic countries such as India. Tubercular pyosalpinx is a rare presentation of FGTB. Even more uncommon is its complication by isolated tubal torsion, which may mimic other causes of acute abdomen, making early diagnosis challenging. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl who presented with acute lower abdominal pain and vomiting. She had a 2-month history of low-grade evening fever. Clinical evaluation and ultrasou

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health issue with India accounting for about 25% of the global TB burden. While TB primarily impacts the lungs, extrapulmonary cases are also common, particularly female genital TB (GTB) among younger patients accounting for about 10%-15% of all TB infections. Isolated ovarian TB is a very rare form of extrapulmonary TB that usually presents with atypical symptoms. It presents a diagnostic challenge pertaining to its clinical presentation which is often misleading and mimics ovarian malignancy. Even though TB is curable and preventable, GTB poses a sig

BACKGROUND: Urogenital tuberculosis (UGTB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) affecting the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Its nonspecific symptoms often mimic common urological conditions like urinary tract infections (UTIs), leading to delayed diagnosis. This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and emphasizes the need for timely intervention to prevent irreversible renal damage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old south-Asian female presented with sudden decreased consciousness and severe renal impairment, requiring emergency dialysis. Despite the absence of typical tub

Female genital tuberculosis (FGTB), a form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is an under-recognized but significant cause of female infertility, particularly in developing countries. It primarily spreads through the hematogenous route and often presents with non-specific or asymptomatic clinical features, complicating early diagnosis. Latent tuberculosis (LTB) is increasingly being identified among women with unexplained infertility and may impair reproductive outcomes by affecting ovarian reserve, endometrial receptivity, and implantation. Traditional

BACKGROUND Tuberculosis remains a global health issue, with 25% of the population carrying latent infection and 5-10% at risk of active disease. In 2021, 10.6 million people were affected and 1.6 million died. While pulmonary TB is most common, extrapulmonary cases are rising. Female genital TB accounts for 5-30% of infertility worldwide. Endometrial TB often begins asymptomatically but can cause menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, and infertility. This study evaluated the clinical value of negative-pressure endometrial sampling in screening endometrial TB. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty-four patie

INTRODUCTION: Urogenital tuberculosis (UGT) is a common manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and can affect all organs of the urinary tract and male genital tract. The actual main problem of UGT is late diagnosis and a high prevalence of urogenital organ destruction. Little progress has been made in preventing the disease from progressing to more destructive forms. Knowledge diffusion of critical insights of UGT is the objective of this revision.
AREAS COVERED: A narrative review of urogenital tuberculosis was performed in the databases of PubMed, Embase, and Scielo without time and l

Genitourinary tuberculosis (GU-TB) is a rare but significant manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, particularly among immunocompromised individuals. Diagnosis remains difficult in resource-limited settings where access to culture or advanced imaging is restricted. The World Health Organization recently endorsed the urinary lipoarabinomannan (TB-LAM) assay for early tuberculosis detection in people with advanced HIV. We report the case of a 29-year-old mestizo man from Peru with HIV diagnosed in 2018 who had discontinued antiretroviral therapy (ART) shortly after initiation. He reengage

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major opportunistic infection in solid organ transplant recipients, with an incidence significantly higher than in the general population. Immunosuppression often leads to atypical and disseminated forms of TB, complicating timely diagnosis. Extrapulmonary TB can manifest in various genitourinary sites, but penile involvement is exceedingly rare, comprising less than 1% of urogenital TB cases.
CASE SUMMARY: We report a confirmed case of penile TB in a 56-year-old abattoir worker with a history of renal transplant, who presented with a penile ulcer with

BACKGROUND: India has the highest tuberculosis (TB) burden in the world. Of the estimated annual 10 million TB cases, features of extra pulmonary TB are evident in up to 45%. Urogenital TB (UGTB) accounts for approximately 20% of those cases. The lack of non-sputum based diagnostic tools continue to hinder efforts to reduce the burden of UGTB. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in biological pathways and can be used as a potential biomarker for TB. We evaluated urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs) as non-invasive source to explore miRNAs with biomarker potential for UGTB.
