Unusually aggressive primary testicular diffuse large B-cell lymphoma initially presenting as systemic disseminating metastases in older adult men: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Primary testicular lymphoma (PTL) accounts for 1-2% of all nonHodgkin lymphomas (NHL), 4% of extranodal nonHodgkin lymphomas, and ~9% of testicular malignancies. A rare subtype of PTL is primary testicular diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PT-DLBCL), which may initially present as disseminating metastasis in older adult males and has a poor prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein, the authors describe the case of a 64-year-old man with the chief complaint of a painless unilateral scrotal mass. Computed tomography scans of the abdomen and a pelvic examination demonstrated a left testicul

CD5-Negative Primary Mantle Cell Lymphoma Presenting with a Bilateral Conjunctival Mass: A Potential Diagnostic Pitfall.

Mantle cell lymphoma is a B-cell malignancy, which, in its classic form, usually involves lymph nodes and extranodal sites, and, among the extranodal sites, the gastrointestinal tract and the Waldeyer's ring are most prevalent. MCL is rarely reported in the ocular adnexa, a site more frequently affected by extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, which is a form of low-grade malignancy. The diagnosis of MCL presenting in the ocular adnexa requires special attention as its rarity in this location combined with the not uncommon CD5 negativity of the disease

The Need to Set up a Biobank Dedicated to Lymphoid Malignancies: Experience of a Single Center (Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, University Côte d'Azur, Nice, France).

Several therapies to improve the management of lymphoma are currently being investigated, necessitating the development of new biomarkers. However, this requires high-quality and clinically annotated biological material. Therefore, we established a lymphoma biobank including all available biological material (tissue specimens and matched biological resources) along with associated clinical data for lymphoma patients diagnosed, according to the WHO classification, between 2005 and 2022 in the Laboratory of Clinical and Experimental Pathology, Nice, France. We retrospectively included selected c

Adenoid hypertrophy in children: a narrative review of pathogenesis and clinical relevance.

Adenoids (nasopharyngeal tonsils), being part of Waldeyer's ring, are masses of lymphoid tissues located at the junction of the roof and the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. Adenoids play an important role in the development of the immune system and serve as a defence against infections, being the first organs that come into contact with respiratory and digestive antigens. The causes of adenoid hypertrophy are not fully known. They are most likely associated with aberrant immune reactions, infections, environmental exposures and hormonal or genetic factors. The aim of this review is to summa

Multimodality imaging evaluation of primary testicular extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma: two case reports.

BACKGROUND: Extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) is a distinct pathological entity and accounts for ~10% of T-cell lymphomas. The histological features of ENKTCL include angiodestruction and coagulative necrosis and the association with EBV infection. ENKTCL is typically aggressive and mainly affects the nasal cavity and nasopharyngeal region. However, some patients can present with distant nodal or extranodal involvement such as the Waldeyer ring, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary organs, lung, thyroid, skin, and testes. Compared to ENKTCL of nasal type, primary testicular E

Waldeyer ring microbiome in relation to chemoradiation-induced oral mucositis in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Waldeyer lymphatic ring surrounds the nasopharynx and oropharynx, and no study to date has correlated its microbiome with the severity of oral mucositis (OM) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) receiving chemoradiotherapy. METHODS: We performed 16S rRNA sequencing to characterize bacterial microbiome in tumor-affected nasopharynx and the surrounding normal oropharynx. We plotted the abundance and diversity of bacterial taxa and their phylogenetic distance and networks to visualize and compare the differences in pretreatment overall bacterial communities between the nas

Mapping of SARS-CoV-2 in Waldeyer's lymphatic ring and visceral biopsies: the age and the illness duration's impact.

OBJECTIVE: To study the impact of age and the interval between disease diagnosis and death on the organotropism of SARS-CoV-2. METHOD: Patients underwent post-mortem biopsies from lungs, Waldeyer ring, heart, liver, kidneys and bone marrow between 2020‒2021. SARS-CoV-2 organotropism was mapped by using molecular RT-PCR analyses for SARS-CoV2 targeting the Envelope gene (E), the RNA Polymerase Gene (RdRp), and the Nucleocapsid gene (N). Statistical and linear regression analysis was performed to study the impact of age and illness duration in SARS-CoV-2 organotropism. RESULTS: We performed 15

Improved outcomes of localized diffuse large B-cell lymphoma at the Waldeyer ring in comparison to the sinonasal area in the rituximab era.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the head-and-neck area primarily involves the Waldeyer ring (WR) and sinonasal area (SN). However, the differential clinical outcomes between patients with WR-DLBCL and those with SN-DLBCL in the rituximab era remain unclear. METHODS: To avoid confounding factors contributed by advanced DLBCL with WR and SN involvement, we assessed the clinical outcomes of patients with stage I/II WR-DLBCL and SN-DLBCL and compared them with those having corresponding stages of DLBCL in the lymph nodes but without other extranodal involvement (LN-DLBCL) in

Four cycles of R-CHOP followed by two applications of rituximab based on negative interim PET/CT: an analysis of a prospective trial.

BACKGROUND: R-CHOP with or without radiotherapy is the standard treatment for limited-stage diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). To prevent overtreatment, we assessed whether four cycles of CHOP plus six applications of rituximab was adequate with negative interim PET/CT and the role of consolidation radiotherapy specifically for patients with Waldeyer's ring DLBCL. One hundred and twenty-nine patients with limited-stage DLBCL were enrolled in this open-label, nonrandomized, single-arm, phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01804127). METHODS: All patients were initially treated with 4 cycles of R-CHO

Mucosal immunity: The missing link in comprehending SARS-CoV-2 infection and transmission.

SARS-CoV-2 is primarily an airborne infection of the upper respiratory tract, which on reaching the lungs causes the severe acute respiratory disease, COVID-19. Its first contact with the immune system, likely through the nasal passages and Waldeyer's ring of tonsils and adenoids, induces mucosal immune responses revealed by the production of secretory IgA (SIgA) antibodies in saliva, nasal fluid, tears, and other secretions within 4 days of infection. Evidence is accumulating that these responses might limit the virus to the upper respiratory tract resulting in asymptomatic infection or only

A Submucosal Tumor-like Lesion of the Cervical Esophagus Similar to the Tonsillar Structures of Waldeyer's Ring: A Case Report.

Esophageal submucosal tumors are rare, but their pathological types are diverse. In addition to the relatively common leiomyomas, some rare submucosal lesions are occasionally reported. Waldeyer's ring is described as a unique subtype of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue, located in the naso-oropharynx. Studies have reported that Waldeyer's ring is the most common site of primary extranodal lymphoma in the head and neck. Interestingly, we encountered an esophageal submucosal tumor-like lesion similar to the tonsillar structures of Waldeyer's ring. A 38-year-old man underwent esophagoscopy afte

Oral manifestations of extranodal lymphomas - a review of the literature with emphasis on clinical implications for the practicing dentist.

OBJECTIVE: Lymphoma is a heterogenous group of malignant tumours with proliferation of lymphoid cells or their precursors. Lymphomas in the head and neck region are usually found in Waldeyer's ring. Intraoral lymphomas are rare and the clinical presentation and roentgenological appearance may resemble other and benign conditions, entailing a risk for diagnostic delay. The objective of the present literature review was to identify subjective symptoms, clinical presentations and roentgenological appearances which should raise suspicion of lymphoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature review i

Diagnostic Interval in Extranodal Non-Hodgkin Head and Neck Lymphomas.

The aim of this study is to measure the diagnostic interval (DI) of primary extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphomas (PE-NHL) affecting the head and neck and to discover any associated factors. With this aim, we performed a retrospective observational study in northwestern Spain on patients diagnosed between 1 January 2005 and 1 January 2016. A search was made across the electronic health records of the public health system of this region (SERGAS). DI was used as the dependent variable, and different clinicopathological data of the corresponding patients and tumors were analyzed as exposure variables.

Does the primary tumor site in stage I extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma matter?

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the primary tumor site in stage I extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) had a prognostic value. Between January 2009 and December 2015, 152 stage I ENKTCL patients with primary disease in the nasal cavity and Waldeyer's ring were enrolled for this retrospective study. All patients received extended field intensity-modulated radiotherapy alone without prophylactic cervical node irradiation at a total dose of 50 Gy. In this study, there were 122 patients whose primary tumors were localized in the nasal cavity (NC group), and no ad
