Climate-Related Hazards and Public Health in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC): A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis.

This systematic review with meta-analysis examines mortality, disease burdens, and systemic public health challenges following climate-related hazards and climate-sensitive disasters in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) between 2007 and 2022. A comprehensive search across 6 databases and gray literature sources identified 673 articles, with 5 studies meeting criteria for quantitative meta-analysis and 3 additional reports incorporated for qualitative synthesis. Meta-analysis revealed substantial heterogeneity across studies (I 2 = 81%, P < .001), with a pooled estimate of 6.2 excess deaths

Tsunami-tendenko follows the antiextinction principle, not utilitarianism.

This paper examines the concept of 'tsunami-tendenko,' a guideline suggesting that individuals prioritise their own safety over aiding others during large-scale disasters. Kodama defends tsunami-tendenko against accusations of egoism by arguing that the principle can be justified ethically on consequentialist (or more precisely, utilitarian) grounds. Kodama asserts that attempting to assist others during such disasters heightens the risk of 'tomo-daore,' where both the rescuer and the victim may perish. He claims that having people focus solely on saving themselves can maximise the overall num

Natural disaster-induced dementia and cognitive decline: A meta-analysis and systematic review.

Recently, some studies have noted a negative cognitive impact on individuals in the aftermath of large-scale natural disasters; however, the causal relationship between disasters and cognitive/neurodegenerative effects remains widely unexplored. This review analyzes the impact of natural disasters on the development of cognitive decline (CD), all-cause dementia, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in disaster-affected individuals. Studies reported from their inception to August 2023 were obtained via public online databases. All data presented in this review was derived from precalculated study resul

The 'slow-burn effect' of human trafficking following disaster.

A disaster is frequently cited as a driver of human trafficking, with claims that earthquakes, tsunamis, or typhoons create a chaotic post-calamity environment ripe for traffickers to recruit their victims. Theory suggests that increased poverty, displacement, and a breakdown of law and order contribute to this situation. Yet, there is little discussion in the literature of how post-disaster trafficking unfolds, coupled with a dearth of empirical evidence. This paper challenges existing disaster-trafficking assumptions through interviews with trafficking survivors in the Philippines, a disaste

Establishment of a post-disaster healthcare information booklet for the Turkey-Syrian earthquake, based on past disasters.

The scientific evidence based on experiences with past disasters points to the possibility of the occurrence of future mental health issues among those who were affected by the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake. However, post-disaster care information on factors that could give rise to mental health issues among those affected have yet to be provided. In March 2011, Tohoku University compiled and published a booklet with post-disaster healthcare information based on the experiences with the Great East Japan Earthquake. This study aimed to promote the introduction and use of this booklet for post-

Prevention of Natural Disaster-Induced Cardiovascular Diseases.

Natural disasters, such as floods and landslides caused by heavy rainfall, earthquakes, and tsunamis, can induce stress, which may contribute to the onset and aggravation of various cardiovascular diseases. The circulatory system is most susceptible to the effects of stress, and stress-related cardiovascular diseases, such as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, pulmonary thromboembolism, hypertension, stroke triggered by increased blood pressure, and acute myocardial infarction, can occur during natural disasters. The risk of developing angina pectoris, arrhythmia, sudden cardiac death, and heart failur

Disaster Preparedness and Safety Curriculum for Early Childhood Education in Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is located within the Asia-Pacific Ring of Fire, so natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, floods, and landslides are common. Preparedness is essential to prevent many casualties due to various disasters. PROBLEM: The Aceh, Indonesia earthquake and tsunami in 2004 was one of the most devastating disasters since the 1990s. Some of the victims were children. This is because there was no pattern of preparedness in dealing with disasters when the incident took place; even the word tsunami was not familiar in Indonesia at that time. Thus, the pre

Humanitarian forensic medicine: a systematic review.

Various concerns relating to international humanitarian law and human rights were risen by natural catastrophes (tsunamis, floods, fires), the Covid-19 pandemic, the epidemic breakouts of Ebola, as well as the significant migrant wave observed in the Mediterranean region. Forensic Medicine has direct interactions with both domestic and international law, and thus is frequently asked to provide solutions for these issues. The term "Humanitarian Forensic Action" (HFA), which refers to the application of forensic science to serve humanitarian endeavors, was created. The management of crises inclu

'Hiding in plain sight' - mass disasters and murder.

The majority of homicides do not occur in mass disasters but are often solitary events. This enables medicolegal investigations to be targeted around the features of a specific case. Mass disasters may, however, result in a large numbers of bodies being brought in over relatively short periods of time. Such disasters may also occur in isolated locations with limited resources and facilities resulting in full autopsies not being undertaken, with faster processing of cases than is usual. For this reason it is possible that injuries due to inflicted trauma may not always be identified. Given the

Urban children at risk of violence: A qualitative study of experiences of parents, teachers, and service providers of collaborative support.

Children who are at risk of involvement in violence need assistance from multisector agencies such as social services, law enforcement, health, and education. The aim of this study was to understand the perceptions and experiences of parents, teachers, and service providers (i.e., counselors, psychologists, paralegals, and social workers) on collaborative support for children at risk of violence in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Twenty-four structured interviews were conducted with ten parents whose children were victims of sexual or physical abuse or were involved in substance abuse and theft and hav

Association between the extent of house collapse and urine sodium-to-potassium ratio of victims affected by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami: a cross-sectional study.

People who experience natural disasters have a high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. We investigated the association between the extent of house collapse and urine sodium-to-potassium (UNa/K) ratio of 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake victims. We used the baseline survey data of the Tohoku Medical Megabank Project Community-Based Cohort Study of 29 542 individuals (aged 20-74 years) residing in the affected areas. The UNa/K ratio was calculated using spot urinary electrolyte values. Analysis of covariance was used to calculate the multivariate-adjusted geometric means of the UNa/K ra

Association between housing damage, present bias and delayed-onset post-traumatic stress symptoms among older adults 9 years after a natural disaster.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that experience of natural disasters may heighten present bias. Research also suggests that impaired self-control (in particular, heightened present bias) could be linked to delayed-onset post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among survivors of natural disasters. We examined a hypothesis that the association between disaster experiences and delayed-onset PTSS is mediated through present bias among older survivors of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. METHODS: The baseline survey was conducted for older adults who lived in a city located 80 km west of t

The risk of withdrawal from hypertension treatment in coastal areas after the Great East Japan Earthquake: the TMM CommCohort Study.

This study aimed to examine whether risk of withdrawal from HTTx was higher in coastal areas that were severely damaged by tsunami than in inland areas. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 9218 participants aged ≥20 years in Miyagi, Japan. The odds ratios (ORs) and confidence interval (CI) for withdrawal from HTTx in coastal and inland groups were compared using multivariate logistic regression analysis, adjusting for potential confounders. In total, 194 of 5860 and 146 of 3358 participants in the inland and coastal groups, respectively, withdrew from HTTx treatment. OR (95%CI) of withdraw

Volcanic ash, victims, and tsunami debris from the Late Bronze Age Thera eruption discovered at Çeşme-Bağlararası (Turkey).

The Late Bronze Age Thera eruption was one of the largest natural disasters witnessed in human history. Its impact, consequences, and timing have dominated the discourse of ancient Mediterranean studies for nearly a century. Despite the eruption's high intensity (Volcanic Explosivity Index 7; Dense Rock Equivalent of 78 to 86 km) [T. H. Druitt, F. W. McCoy, G. E. Vougioukalakis, Elements 15, 185-190 (2019)] and tsunami-generating capabilities [K. Minoura et al., Geology 28, 59-62 (2000)], few tsunami deposits are reported. Scoping review on trauma and recovery in youth after natural disasters: what Europe can learn from natural disasters around the world.

In the last decade, Europe has seen a rise in natural disasters. Due to climate change, an increase of such events is predicted for the future. While natural disasters have been a rare phenomenon in Europe so far, other regions of the world, such as Central and North America or Southeast Asia, have regularly been affected by Hurricanes and Tsunamis. The aim of the current study is to synthesize the literature on child development in immediate stress, prolonged reactions, trauma, and recovery after natural disasters with a special focus on trajectories of (mal-)adaptation.
