[Treatment of lower limb osteomyelitis by a local bone substitute supplemented with antibiotics].

A seriously injured tsunami victim with complicated osteomyelitis is presented. The patient was treated with a new resorbable bone substitute, which can be loaded with different antibiotics. The successful treatment is illustrated by the clinical, radiological and histological features. Bilateral open fractures of the lower leg with open elbow fracture led to a bilateral amputation of the lower legs and the right arm because of a beginning sepsis. The following intramedullary osteitis with multiresistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterococcus faecium was treated with the bon

Post-impact disaster surveillance - a medical reconnaissance team at tsunami-struck sri lanka.

Emergency Medicine and Disaster Medicine are two specialties which are similar in the multidisciplinary involvement during the acute phase of the disaster. Recently, there was an increase in the number of disasters in the world but not many physicians are familiar with the principles for dealing with such situations, the unique organizational demands, coordination and the urgent need for medical assistance and relief. This case report delineates our experiences at a tsunami disaster area and the approach to setting up a medical relief team in the affected area. A medical reconnaissance team co

Exploring disparities between global HIV/AIDS funding and recent tsunami relief efforts: an ethical analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To contrast relief efforts for the 26 December 2004 tsunami with current global HIV/AIDS relief efforts and analyse possible reasons for the disparity. METHODS: Literature review and ethical analysis. RESULTS: Just over 273,000 people died in the tsunami, resulting in relief efforts of more than US$10 bn, which is sufficient to achieve the United Nation's long-term recovery plan for South East Asia. In contrast, 14 times more people died from HIV/AIDS in 2004, with UNAIDS predicting a US$8 bn funding gap for HIV/AIDS in developing nations between now and 2007. This disparity raise

Automated forensic DNA purification optimized for FTA card punches and identifiler STR-based PCR analysis.

Forensic labs globally face the same problem-a growing need to process a greater number and wider variety of samples for DNA analysis. The same forensic lab can be tasked all at once with processing mixed casework samples from crime scenes, convicted offender samples for database entry, and tissue from tsunami victims for identification. Besides flexibility in the robotic system chosen for forensic automation, there is a need, for each sample type, to develop new methodology that is not only faster but also more reliable than past procedures. FTA is a chemical treatment of paper, unique to Wha

Health surveillance among a team of Australian health workers assisting tsunami victims in Aceh, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent and nature of health-related behaviours and outcomes among members of the first foreign medical team to arrive in Aceh, following the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. METHODS: A cross sectional survey of team members 4 weeks after return from Aceh. RESULTS: Compliance with antimalarial chemoprophylaxis and insect repellent was high while in Aceh, but only one-third completed the course of chemoprophylaxis. The provision of prepackaged food and water was likely to have prevented enteric disease. Members reported mosquito bites, fatigue, sunburn, headache and anxi

"Foreign" DNA in tissue adherent to compact bone from tsunami victims.

We present two cases of tsunami victim identification where the DNA profile from compact bone gave an authentic DNA profile, while the DNA profiles obtained from adhering soft tissue or bone marrow gave different, incorrect profiles. The source of the contaminating DNA is unclear; the possibility that this occurred via transfer of putrefaction liquid in stacked bodies, or dispersal of contaminating material during conservation with formalin is discussed. We recommend the exclusive use of carefully sampled compact bone without adhering tissue as source of DNA to avoid misidentification in simil

Data transmission in dental identification of mass disaster victims.

UNLABELLED: Dental evidence, especially from radiographs, has been found to be an effective method in personal identification. Previously, it has been shown that wireless personal digital assistants (PDA) can be used to transfer digitized radiographs. The purpose of this study was to set up a secure and reliable mobile connection for transferring dental digital images for disaster victim identification, and to test this new way of working in Phuket, Thailand, following the December 2004 Asian Tsunami disaster. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Digital dental radiographs and clinical images were transferr

Radiologic findings in tsunami trauma: experience with 225 patients injured in the 2004 tsunami.

The objective of this study was to determine the spectrum of radiographic findings, frequency, and type of injuries in tsunami victims. From December 2004 to May 2005, all tsunami victims admitted to our hospital were retrospectively identified by a search of medical records. Patients who received radiologic examinations were reviewed for their radiographic findings. The authors identified 225 tsunami victims. One hundred eight victims received radiologic evaluations on admission that included 350 plain radiographs, 19 ultrasound exams, 18 computed tomography (CT) scans and 3 magnetic resonanc

Wastewater treatment in tsunami affected areas of Thailand by constructed wetlands.

The tsunami of December 2004 destroyed infrastructure in many coastal areas in South-East Asia. In January 2005, the Danish Government gave a tsunami relief grant to Thailand to re-establish the wastewater management services in some of the areas affected by the tsunami. This paper describes the systems which have been built at three locations: (a) Baan Pru Teau: A newly-built township for tsunami victims which was constructed with the contribution of the Thai Red Cross. Conventional septic tanks were installed for the treatment of blackwater from each household and its effluent and grey water

[Guidelines in mass disaster victims identification through the Tsunami experience (December 26, 2004)].

The adequate management of a victim's identification must go through an essential rigour in the applied methodology. This is all the more necessary when you face a mass disaster such as the Tsunami of December 26, 2004. We will explain in this presentation how the DVI Belgian Team, in close collaboration with the other International Teams, proceeded in January 2005, adopting real guidelines, in strict accordance with the Interpol fixed ones. We will review the various stages of our work, paying special attention to the fingerprints, the examination of clothes, jewels and specific objects, but

Infections in post-tsunami victims.

Two tsunami survivors from Banda Acheh, Sumatra, presented with pyrexia of unknown origin and a nonresolving left-sided empyema, respectively. Both children had mixed infections of tuberculosis and melioidosis; Salmonella typhi was also present in the second patient. Mixed infections are common late sequela complications in post-tsunami victims.

[Psychological perception of risk, infections and catastrophes. The greatest danger is human nature].

Risk perception is due to a subjective evaluation of reality and depends on a number of factors such as: individual coherence and flexibility, the set of social values and rules that contributed to the definition of the individuals' interior world - this does not always make proper risk perception possible. Even though the way common people set-up their own judgment is based on their own interpretation tracks, surely different from expert criteria, we cannot label their approach as irrational. Over time, through an evolutionary process, people have decided what is safe and what is dangerous; t

Lessons learned from large-scale comparative dental analysis following the South Asian tsunami of 2004.

The aim of this study was to examine the quality of the ante-(AM) and postmortem (PM) dental data that were submitted for entry into the PLASS data system in Phuket, Thailand, following the Boxing Day (December 26) Tsunami, 2004. The investigators were two forensic odontologists who were part of the New Zealand Disaster Victim Identification team that worked at Wat Yang Yao morgue and at the Information Management Center in Phuket. Our findings underline the usefulness of dental data in human identification, but point to a number of significant sources of error. Of the 78 PM records received,
