Adverse drugs reactions to paracetamol and ibuprofen in children: a 5-year report from a pediatric poison control center in Italy.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to analyze all the patients who contacted the hospital's pediatric poison control center (PPCC) for exposure to ibuprofen and acetaminophen, in order to assess the incidence of any adverse reactions. METHODS: We retrospectively reported the clinical data of children who accessed the PPCC of the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital, IRCCS, Rome, from January 1, 2018 to September 30, 2022 due to wrong, accidental or intentional intake of inappropriate doses of acetaminophen and/or ibuprofen. In addition, we compared patients according to the intake of one of the two dru

National Poison Center Calls Before vs After Availability of High-Dose Acetaminophen (Paracetamol) Tablets in Switzerland.

IMPORTANCE: Acetaminophen (paracetamol) is among the most widely used pain medications worldwide; while safe within the therapeutic range, intake exceeding 4000 mg/d can lead to hepatotoxicity. Prior evidence suggests that limiting the availability of large quantities of acetaminophen is associated with decreased acetaminophen-related poisonings and mortality; in Switzerland, 500-mg tablets are available over-the-counter (OTC) and, as of October 2003, 1000-mg tablets are available with prescription. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of adding 1000-mg acetaminophen tablets to the Swiss ma

Epidemiology of acute poisoning in children presenting to the poisoning treatment center at Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt, 2009-2013.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric poisonings represent a major and preventable cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world. Epidemiologic information about poisoning among children in many lower- and middle-income countries is scarce. This study describes the epidemiology of acute poisonings in children presenting to Ain Shams University's Poisoning Treatment Center (ASU-PTC) in Cairo and determines the causative agents and characteristics of acute poisoning in several pediatric age groups. METHODS: This retrospective study involved acutely poisoned patients, 0-18 years of age, who presented

Characteristics of older and younger patients with suspected paracetamol toxicity.

AIM: The aim of this study was to compare the characteristics of older and younger patients with suspected paracetamol toxicity. METHODS: A retrospective audit of the medical records of older (≥65 years, n = 25) and younger (20-30 years, n = 50) patients with a detectable paracetamol level at a Sydney hospital. RESULTS: Older patients showed a different clinical pattern of suspected paracetamol toxicity and were more likely than younger patients to have multifactorial elevation of liver function tests. Additionally, older age was more likely to be associated with chronic therapeutic paraceta

Massive GI bleeding due to accidental ASA inhalation.

This report describes a 38-year-old man admitted to hospital for a massive rectal bleeding and syncope. He was known to have idiopathic thrombocytopenia but he had never complained of bleeding until he was admitted to hospital with uncontrolled hemorrhage. Upper and lower endoscopic examination, performed 6 hours after occurrence of bleeding, were negative for ulcers or other bleeding lesions. However, capsule endoscopy did detect diffuse areas of petechial hemorrhage and erosions in the small bowel. Thromboelastography performed on the day of admission showed a marked decrease in platelet agg

Profile of poisoning admissions in Malaysia.

We retrospectively reviewed poisoning admissions to all government health facilities from 1999 to 2001, in an effort to expand our current knowledge on poisoning in Malaysia to a level that better reflects a nationwide burden. There were 21 714 admissions reported with 779 deaths. The case-fatality rate was 35.88/1000 admissions. The majority of admissions (89.7%) and deaths (98.9%) occurred in adults. Some 55.1% of all admissions were female, mostly involving pharmaceutical agents. Male poisoning admissions were more often due to chemical substances. The prevalence of poisoning and death was

Ivermectin toxicosis in a zebra.

A 3-mo-old zebra was accidentally given 2.08 mg ivermectin/kg bw orally. Ataxia, blindness and depression developed within a few hours and resolved with symptomatic and supportive treatment by the fifth day post-exposure. These effects were similar to those reported in horses, including the temporary blindness.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug toxicosis in dogs and cats: 240 cases (1989-1990).

A search of medical records at the Georgia Animal Poison Information Center over a 19-month period revealed 240 cases of dog and cat exposure to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). The most common NSAID consumed were ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin, and indomethacin. The most common clinical signs of toxicosis were vomiting and diarrhea, CNS depression, and circulatory manifestations. Pets are at risk from NSAID toxicosis through administration by the owners or accidental consumption of improperly stored drugs.

[Demonstration by lymphocyte transformation test of the allergic genesis in a case of acute hepatitis].

After accidental re-exposure to metamizole a 50-year-old patient developed severe jaundice within five hours (total bilirubin 43.9 mg/dl) with a rise of GOT to 147, of GPT to 222, of gamma-GT to 380 and of alkaline phosphatase to 497 U/l. The allergic genesis of this reaction was demonstrated in the lymphocyte transformation test which, in the presence of the causative substance and its metabolites, was performed five times during a period of 232 days. The first three tests were positive with stimulation indices up to 2.3. Sensitization to the metabolite 4-aminoantipyrine was demonstrated: thi

A comparison of the frequency and severity of poisoning cases for ingestion of acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen.

During 1984, 62,837 cases of human exposure to analgesics were reported to the National Data Collection System of the American Association of Poison Control Centers. We undertook a comparative study of 10,134 cases of human exposure to adult formulations of aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen from which we found that human exposures to analgesics are a common problem reported to poison control centers. All three analgesics studied appear to have minimal toxicity in children who accidentally ingest the product and report the exposure to a poison control center. Most children were managed with
