Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has been linked to Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) by seroepidemiological evidence and by the regular proof of EBV-DNA in the epithelial tumor cells. We have reviewed the records of 76 patients with Stage I or II extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who were referred to the Division of Radiation Oncology, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology, during the years 1964 through 1974. The histologic slides were reviewed in the 67 cases in which they were available. Forty-three percent of Ann Arbor Stage I and II patients relapsed after primary radiation treatment.Seventy-three percent of these failed in sites distant from the irradiated volume. Amongst 128 patients with Hodgkin's disease six were found to have involvement of Waldeyer's lymphoid ring, one in tonsil and five in nasopharynx. Of these, three were histologically verified by biopsies taken from Waldeyer's ring, whilst three had histology only from upper cervical lymph nodes. Twenty-four cases of extranodal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma presenting in the testicle are reviewed. All cases are diffuse lymphoma by the Rappaport classification. Cases clinically stages as I/II, (18/24) show a prolonged survival compared with those clinically staged as III/IV (6 of 24). Amyloidosis of the tonsil is a rare condition and amyloidosis of Waldeyer's ring has not been previously reported. The present study describes a case of amyloidosis of the tonsil, nasopharynx and base of tongue in a 35-year-old patient in otherwise good health and without clinical symptoms. Malignant lymphoma with a high content of epithelioid histiocytes is a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma first described by Lennert and Mestdagh (Lennert's lymphoma) in 1968. A diagnosis of hypertrophied adenoid tissue was confirmed in 12 adults each investigated for a nasopharyngeal mass. The patients ranged in age from 17 to 64 and initially presented with either nasal obstruction or serous otitis media. Four patients had evidence of allergic disease. The development of the lymphoid tissue of Waldeyer's ring is reviewed. Although the adenoid is thought to regress in adolescence, it appears that it can remain hypertrophied and become symptomatic in adulthood. A thorough clinical investigation culminating in biopsy is essential to exclude more ominous pathology.

As of March 1978, the prognosis was confirmed in 715 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cases reported during the 12-year period from 1965 through 1976 in the Prefecture of Kagoshima. Included were 222 cases of extranodal lymphoma. Patients with the initial tumor site in the gastrointestinal tract and Waldeyer's ring had a relatively good probability of survival. A retrospective study of 85 children with non-Hodgkin' s lymphoma diagnosed and treated in the period of 1963-1974 was undertaken to asses clinical characteristics, pronostic factors and survival.
