Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) comprises immunogenetically defined stereotyped subsets of patients with distinct B-cell receptor (BcR) immunoglobulin features and clinical trajectories, yet the molecular pathways underlying subset-specific differences remain incompletely characterized. To resolve disease-relevant heterogeneity obscured in bulk analyses, we performed integrated single-cell transcriptomic and immunogenetic profiling of 48 557 malignant and bystander immune cells from 13 treatment-naïve primary patient samples representing poor-prognostic subsets #1 and #2 and the indolent su

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is quietly becoming Somalia's next health catastrophe. While the world focuses on immediate crises, an estimated 8,400 deaths annually are directly attributed to AMR, with another 32,700 linked to AMR complications. These numbers place Somalia among the top 10 countries globally for AMR-related mortality, surpassing deaths from maternal disease, cardiovascular conditions, and infectious disease combined. Yet Somalia has a national action plan. The problem is not policy; it is implementation. Despite developing an AMR National Action Plan aligned with global strat

We used chlorophyll fluorescence techniques to investigate seasonal variations in photosystem II (PSII) quantum yield in five-year-old saplings of the sclerophyllous Peumus boldus Molina (evergreen) and Colliguaja odorifera Molina (semideciduous) planted in a semiarid site with a Mediterranean-type climate. Chlorophyll fluorescence rise kinetics (OJIP) were monitored monthly for one year (September 2024 to September 2025). With this information, we estimated the relative deviation of the performance index (PIABS) of each species from the average PIABS in each season (denoted as ∆PIABS). P. bol

Effectively separating critical materials, including intra-lanthanide separations, is crucial for meeting growing application demands. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is the industry standard for lanthanide separations, where the selectivity can depend on small changes in metal coordination. In this work, we investigate representative lanthanide Eu coordination with a neutral malonamide extractant in an imidazolium bistriflimide ionic liquid (IL) solvent. Through systematic titrations of the water and extractant and under extraction conditions, we observe surprising cooperative Eu solvation wit

Rapid and continuous urbanization has increased water demand in cities worldwide. Global assessments of urban water scarcity should be conducted using gridded hydrological information, but are hampered by the lack of water-resource-based city boundary information. This study introduces HydroUrbanMap (HUM), a global gridded dataset of city boundaries for 1,604 cities at 5 arcmin resolution, incorporating hydrological attributes. HUM consists of two key components: delineation of city boundaries that include the population served by urban water services (supply and drainage), and estimation of a

Efficient catalytic detoxification of nerve agents under atmospheric conditions is severely hindered by the lack of water and poor accessibility of catalytic sites. Herein, a polyamide 56 (PA56)-based nanonet membrane with spontaneous hygroscopicity and self-buffering capacity is designed for efficient catalytic detoxification of dimethyl-4-nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP), a representative nerve agent simulant, which is fabricated by the in situ growth of metal-organic frameworks (UiO-66-NH2) on a spider-web-like electrospun PA56 nanofibrous membrane, followed by the integration of hygroscopic Li

Deserts are among the most extreme environments on Earth. High temperatures and a lack of water impose powerful selective pressures on desert species, offering an opportunity to investigate the genetic basis of local adaptation. Despite the unique challenges of desert living, house mice (Mus musculus domesticus), a species native to Western Europe, have recently colonized the Sonoran Desert in North America within the last 400-600 generations. House mice from the Sonoran Desert show phenotypic differences consistent with adaptation to water scarcity, including maintaining weight better under w

Complexometric titrations have been developed in the 1940s and 50s for virtually every metal cation. However, the colorimetry or spectrophotometric monitoring of their end points limit their sensitivity range to the μM to mM range. Hence, these methods were quickly replaced by atomic instrumental methods, which became the new benchmark when the corresponding instruments became widely accessible. However, in the context of a global lack of water quality data, especially in low-income or geographically isolated areas, these instrumental golden standards are out of reach. In this work, we revisit

With the growing demand for sustainable and eco-friendly food packaging, biopolymer-based materials are emerging as promising candidates due to their recyclability, biodegradability, and food safety. However, in practical applications dealing with high moisture content or perishable foods, their lack of water resistance poses a significant barrier, limiting their widespread use. This review comprehensively summarizes recent advances in biomimetic strategies to overcome these limitations of biopolymer-based packaging, focusing specifically on water resistance and hydrophobic biopolymer-based pa

Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are widely used fire suppression products that have been identified as a direct source of environmental per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposure has demonstrated chronic and sublethal effects on biota. Ongoing efforts aim to reduce and, ideally, eliminate PFAS use in AFFF products. However, there is little known about the potential toxic effects of the new PFAS-free AFFFs, specifically on benthic organisms. The objective of this study is to quantify the effects of seven AFFFs on growth in the hard clam, Mercenari

Adequate dietary intake in early childhood is essential for growth and development. However, evidence on geographic disparities and recent trends in food group consumption among young children in India remains limited. This study investigated district-level changes in the consumption of specific food groups among children aged 6-23 months in India. Data from two National Family Health Surveys conducted in 2016 and 2021 of India were used, and a harmonized 720-district geometry was applied to ensure comparability across survey rounds. Multilevel modeling accounting for children nested within co

We aimed to assess whether childhood hunger experiences are associated with adverse health outcomes in old age. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the second wave of the ELSI-Brazil (2019-2021). Childhood hunger was assessed by the following question: "From birth until you were 15 years old, have you ever had a lack of food in your home and ended up going to bed feeling hungry?". Outcomes were obesity, multimorbidity, limitation in basic activities of daily living (BADLs), frailty, cognitive impairment, and depressive symptoms. Logistic regression was used in data analysis.

With more than sixty percent of U.S. adults struggling with at least one diet-related health condition, the relationship between nutrition and public health has never been clearer. Indeed, for the first time in over a century, food has a prominent place on the national political stage and is one of the exceedingly few issues that has garnered bipartisan support. The recent rise in popularity of "Food Is Medicine" initiatives, which seek to provide medically tailored or healthy meals to vulnerable populations, underscores the critical importance of food to public health. Yet, while "Food Is Med

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, with a rising concern for the developing and spreading of antimicrobial-resistant strains due to the imprudent utilization of antimicrobials. Continuous surveillance of Salmonella resistance patterns is critical. This study aims to estimate the occurrence of Salmonella species (spp.) in raw beef and on meat contact surfaces in Hossana Town, Central Ethiopia. Additionally, it seeks to identify associated risk factors that contribute to the presence of Salmonella and to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity affects over half of Cambodia's population, yet despite national efforts to improve equitable access to food, little is known about how migration patterns and provincial contexts shape this vulnerability. This study examines provincial variation in food insecurity in Cambodia, its association with domestic migration patterns, modification by household-head gender and the role of provincial-level contextual factors.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 5166 adults aged 18 and older from the 2023 World Health Survey Plus Cambodia, linked with provinci

BACKGROUND: Food-borne illnesses pose a major global public health threat, affecting up to 30% of people annually in higher-income countries and contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year with the heaviest burden falling on low and middle income countries. In Ethiopia, prior research on food handlers' safety practices has been limited to quantitative methods offering little insight into cultural, behavioral and institutional barriers. To the best of our knowledge, limited mixed-methods evidence exists in this context. Therefore, this mixed-methods study addresses the gap through

Bumblebees are excellent pollinators sustaining ecosystems, however, their populations are declining due to land-use changes, lack of food resources, and pathogen-induced diseases. The gut microbiota is central to animal health, influencing nutrition and defense. We examined how pollen diet affects colony development, pathogen presence, and gut microbiota in two native South American bumblebee species, Bombus pauloensis and B. bellicosus. In B. pauloensis, monofloral pollen from Eucalyptus grandis increased worker body mass and showed a slight reduction in developmental time compared to polyfl

Loneliness and stress are increasingly prevalent among aged 65 years and older and have been linked to poor health outcomes and limited access to care. These psychological factors often intersect with social determinants of health (SDH), yet little is known about how SDH mediate their effects on healthcare utilization. This study used 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data to examine the relationships between loneliness, stress, and healthcare access among U.S. adults aged 65 and older (N = 62,878). Key outcomes included having a personal healthcare provider and attending
