Orthopedic surgery is among the most physically demanding medical specialties, exposing surgeons to prolonged static postures, repetitive high-force movements, and heavy equipment that significantly increase the risk of musculoskeletal injury. Historical perspectives reveal that ergonomic principles have been recognized since antiquity, yet modern surgical practice continues to neglect them, resulting in high rates of pain, disability, and even premature retirement among orthopedic surgeons. Recent survey data demonstrate that musculoskeletal disorders affect surgeons across all subspecialties

Although topographical maps organize many peripheral sensory systems, mouse olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are thought to randomly choose which one of ∼1,100 possible olfactory receptors (ORs) to express, with spatial organization in the olfactory epithelium limited to a handful of broad anatomical "zones" that modestly restrict OR choice. Here, we reveal that each OR is instead expressed at a unique mean dorsoventral position, thereby instantiating a stereotyped receptor map in the olfactory epithelium. OSN dorsoventral identities are encoded by a coherent gene expression program, which inc

Introduction Neck pain is a leading cause of musculoskeletal disability worldwide, significantly diminishing productivity and quality of life. Occupational risk factors such as prolonged static postures, repetitive upper-limb movements, and poor ergonomic practices are well documented. In hospital settings, laboratory technicians and clerical staff are particularly vulnerable due to sustained task-specific activities and extended periods of sitting. Despite this, these groups remain underrepresented in occupational health research. The primary objective of this study was to determine the preva

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, alongside the presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system, play a crucial role in the development of ASD by regulating synaptic development and plasticity. In this study, we investigate the pharmacological effects and underlying cellular mechanisms of PLX3397 (PLX), a selective inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R), for the pharmacological ablation of microglia in the c

How the brain enables individuals to adapt behavior to their partner is key to understanding social exchange. For example, courtship behavior involves sensorimotor processing of signals that can result in behavioral dialog between partners, such as stereotyped movements and singing. The courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster males with their partners, which are usually female but can also be male, involves singing. To investigate how behavioral feedback and sensorimotor processing contribute to flexible social interactions, we compared the courtship behavior and singing of male D. melan

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) is widely utilized in flexible sensors because of its simple fabrication and low cost. However, transferring LIG to PDMS results in insufficient conductivity and high overall device resistance, which limits its application in high-sensitivity signal detection. Liquid metal (LM), characterized by high conductivity and low resistance, offers a promising pathway to enhance the sensing performance of LIG. This study proposes a hierarchical composite structure that adopts the liquid metal/polydimethylsiloxane (LP) composite strategy to prepare liquid metal graphene flex

Yawning is a phylogenetically preserved and highly stereotyped behavior observed across vertebrates.1 In humans, it emerges early in development, as it is already present prenatally.2,3 Qualitative studies show that fetal yawns display a structured motor pattern closely resembling adult yawns, suggesting a role in early sensorimotor organization,4,5 and they have been proposed to support the maturation of brainstem central pattern generators and early synaptic development.6,7 Due to its early emergence in development, prenatal yawning has largely been interpreted as driven by endogenous progra

BACKGROUND: Combined stimulation with transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at the beta frequency and repetitive paired-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (rPPS) produces different after-effects on cortical excitability in the primary motor cortex (M1) compared with either stimulation alone. Sensorimotor beta oscillations are broadly implicated in resting-state activity, as well as in phasic and sustained movements. However, whether combined stimulation can modulate oscillatory activities remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To address the effects of combined stimulation on sensorim

BACKGROUND: Overhead athletes are at increased risk of shoulder dysfunction due to repetitive, high-velocity movements that can disrupt scapular muscle activation patterns. Whole-body vibration (WBV) has been proposed as a training modality to enhance neuromuscular activation, but its effects on scapular muscle activity and activation timing remain unclear. METHODS: This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of WBV-assisted push-up training on scapular muscle activation and onset latency in university-level overhead athletes. Forty participants were randomly assigned to a WBV gr

Spatial memory is crucial for navigation and adapting to changing environmental conditions. Known neurophysiological mechanisms of spatial memory center on the importance of hippocampal activity and its spatial tuning. Yet, the behavioral strategies that support adaptive spatial encoding remain poorly understood. We have shown that dorsal hippocampal activity during rearing is necessary for spatial working memory, highlighting a role of information seeking behaviors for spatial memory encoding. Similarly, spatial tuning by dorsal hippocampal neurons is substantially updated during another info

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In the period preceding sleep, humans and other animals display a stereotyped repertoire of behaviors-including hygiene-related activities and preparing a place to sleep. Evidence suggests that this pre-sleep phase actively contributes to sleep initiation and quality. Nonetheless, individuals can sometimes fall asleep without preparation, even under undesirable circumstances. These abrupt transitions into sleep can have severe consequences, particularly in high-risk environments. Although progress has been made in identifying neuronal populations controlling sleep/wake states

Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) has enabled machine learning models to track motor states from neural signals with improved accuracy, aiming to provide electrical stimulation accordingly. Such data-driven techniques necessitate extensive user-specific, synchronized kinematic and neural data collection involving repetitive tasks and additional sensors to quantify continuous movements, due to variations in neural signals among individuals. In this study, we introduce the Neural-to-Gait Calibrator Framework (N2GCF), a cross-subject deep learning framework that leverages collective neural d

Skeletal muscle injuries are a common consequence of physical activity, repetitive movements, and trauma. Regulatory T cells (Treg) act as critical mediators of immune repair response after injury. Thus, treatments effectively targeting Treg may accelerate injury resolution. CCL22 is a chemokine that recruits CCR4-expressing cells, particularly Treg, to sites of inflammation or immune regulation, such as tumor microenvironments. When an immunomodulatory, sustained release formulation of polymeric microparticles (MP) delivering CCL22 (CCL22MP), was administered after cardiotoxin (CTx)-mediated

Pangolins, such as the critically endangered Chinese and Malayan species, often develop stereotypic behaviors in captivity. To automate the detection of these behaviors, we propose a video recognition method using an improved YOLO v8n-CBAM model. It detects pangolins and maps their image coordinates to real-world locations, generating movement trajectories. These are segmented and analyzed by a ResNet18 model to identify stereotypic behavior. Our improved YOLO model achieves 99.93% recall and 95.63% mAP@0.50:0.95. Trajectory distance accuracy reaches 98.48%, and stereotypic behavior periods ar

INTRODUCTION: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is widely applied in treating motor dysfunction after stroke. Building on metaplasticity principle, continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) preconditioning enhances subsequent excitatory effects of intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS). This phenomenon is well-established for upper limbs in healthy populations, yet its application to the lower limbs remains underexplored, especially in stroke survivors. Guided by "central-peripheral-central" theory, this protocol investigates the synergistic effects of cTBS-preconditione

Biological sex influences sensitivity to the stimulant and toxic effects of methamphetamine (METH) in both humans and rodents, with females exhibiting greater behavioral responsiveness than males. The clinical treatment target of METH-induced agitation is defined by behavioral presentation rather than a known degree of drug exposure. Therefore, the preclinical locomotor activity model of agitation would benefit from dosing strategies that produce comparable behavioral effects across sexes. This study aimed to identify sex-equivalent METH doses in rats with escalating injections of METH (0.1-1.

Psilocybin is a serotonergic 5-HT 2A R agonist that causes psychedelic and anxiolytic effects in human users. To delineate conservation of psilocybin pharmacology, we investigated behavioral effects of psilocybin in planarians ( Dugesia dorotocephala ), the simplest living animal with cephalization that also has a well defined serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT]) system. We quantified stereotyped movements (e.g. head bops, twists, scrunches, and C-shapes) and defensive responding (negative phototaxis) and probed a 5-HT 2A R mechanism for psilocybin using a selective 5-HT 2A R antagonist (vol

Bergamot essential oil (BEO) has demonstrated antidepressant potential, but its oral application is limited by poor water solubility and undesirable organoleptic properties. In this study, a BEO-loaded beverage was developed based on a whey protein-stabilized oil-in-water emulsion system. The optimal formulation, determined via single-factor experiments combined with orthogonal optimization, consisted of inulin (0.5 g/50 g), milk powder (2.0 g/50 g), sucralose (0.008 g/50 g), and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (0.04 g/50 g). The resulting beverage remained stable without visible phase separati

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often exhibit heightened sensitivity to innocuous mechanical stimuli, such as gentle touch or friction from clothing. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these ASD-associated tactile deficits remain unclear. In the present study, we found that the maternal immune activation (MIA) mouse model of ASD displayed marked mechanical hypersensitivity. Following innocuous mechanical stimulation to the hind paw, protein kinase C gamma (PKCγ) excitatory interneurons were activated in the spinal dorsal horn. Importantly, the activation of PKCγ interneuron

Migratory species often repeat spatio-temporal patterns within their annual cycle. Although this may help to promote knowledge about local features and site quality, stereotyped behaviours may also create an ecological trap by preventing the flexibility required to adjust to environmental changes. Using a long-term international dataset, this study assesses 24 spatial and temporal parameters describing the repeatability of the entire migratory cycle in 94 individuals of the migratory near-threatened Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) that were tracked for up to 7 consecutive years using high-r
