Feeding Young Children in Food Insecure Environments: A Photovoice Study in Kenya's Drylands.

Child wasting remains a global public health challenge, with persistently high levels in dryland regions such as Turkana and Samburu Counties in Kenya. Food scarcity is linked to spikes in wasting prevalence in these counties, but little is known about women's lived experiences of food insecurity and how they perceive its relationship to child wasting. A total of 126 women across diverse livelihood zones in Turkana and Samburu Counties participated in a photovoice activity as part of the Nawiri mixed-methods longitudinal study. The women took photos based on four prompts related to food securi

Replacement per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-free aqueous film-forming foams impact growth more than a PFAS-containing product in the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria.

Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) are widely used fire suppression products that have been identified as a direct source of environmental per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposure has demonstrated chronic and sublethal effects on biota. Ongoing efforts aim to reduce and, ideally, eliminate PFAS use in AFFF products. However, there is little known about the potential toxic effects of the new PFAS-free AFFFs, specifically on benthic organisms. The objective of this study is to quantify the effects of seven AFFFs on growth in the hard clam, Mercenari

Geographic variation in lack of food group consumption among children in India: An analysis of change across 720 districts, 2016-2021.

Adequate dietary intake in early childhood is essential for growth and development. However, evidence on geographic disparities and recent trends in food group consumption among young children in India remains limited. This study investigated district-level changes in the consumption of specific food groups among children aged 6-23 months in India. Data from two National Family Health Surveys conducted in 2016 and 2021 of India were used, and a harmonized 720-district geometry was applied to ensure comparability across survey rounds. Multilevel modeling accounting for children nested within co

Childhood hunger experiences were associated with adverse health outcomes in older Brazilian adults: Evidence from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil).

We aimed to assess whether childhood hunger experiences are associated with adverse health outcomes in old age. A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the second wave of the ELSI-Brazil (2019-2021). Childhood hunger was assessed by the following question: "From birth until you were 15 years old, have you ever had a lack of food in your home and ended up going to bed feeling hungry?". Outcomes were obesity, multimorbidity, limitation in basic activities of daily living (BADLs), frailty, cognitive impairment, and depressive symptoms. Logistic regression was used in data analysis.

Whose Burden Is It Anyway? A Comprehensive Proposal to Reshape Food Safety Review by Treating Food as Medicine.

With more than sixty percent of U.S. adults struggling with at least one diet-related health condition, the relationship between nutrition and public health has never been clearer. Indeed, for the first time in over a century, food has a prominent place on the national political stage and is one of the exceedingly few issues that has garnered bipartisan support. The recent rise in popularity of "Food Is Medicine" initiatives, which seek to provide medically tailored or healthy meals to vulnerable populations, underscores the critical importance of food to public health. Yet, while "Food Is Med

Occurrence and Antimicrobial Resistance of Salmonella in Raw Beef and Meat Contact Surfaces: A Cross-Sectional Study From Hossana Town, Central Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Salmonella is a leading cause of foodborne illness worldwide, with a rising concern for the developing and spreading of antimicrobial-resistant strains due to the imprudent utilization of antimicrobials. Continuous surveillance of Salmonella resistance patterns is critical. This study aims to estimate the occurrence of Salmonella species (spp.) in raw beef and on meat contact surfaces in Hossana Town, Central Ethiopia. Additionally, it seeks to identify associated risk factors that contribute to the presence of Salmonella and to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility profile of

Food insecurity vulnerability among domestic migrants across Cambodian provinces: a multilevel analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity affects over half of Cambodia's population, yet despite national efforts to improve equitable access to food, little is known about how migration patterns and provincial contexts shape this vulnerability. This study examines provincial variation in food insecurity in Cambodia, its association with domestic migration patterns, modification by household-head gender and the role of provincial-level contextual factors. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from 5166 adults aged 18 and older from the 2023 World Health Survey Plus Cambodia, linked with provinci

Food safety practice and associated factors among food handlers working in food and drinking establishments in Debre Birhan City, North Eastern Ethiopia: A convergent parallel mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Food-borne illnesses pose a major global public health threat, affecting up to 30% of people annually in higher-income countries and contributing to hundreds of thousands of deaths each year with the heaviest burden falling on low and middle income countries. In Ethiopia, prior research on food handlers' safety practices has been limited to quantitative methods offering little insight into cultural, behavioral and institutional barriers. To the best of our knowledge, limited mixed-methods evidence exists in this context. Therefore, this mixed-methods study addresses the gap through

"Pollen diets influence gut microbiota composition and colony development in native South American bumblebees".

Bumblebees are excellent pollinators sustaining ecosystems, however, their populations are declining due to land-use changes, lack of food resources, and pathogen-induced diseases. The gut microbiota is central to animal health, influencing nutrition and defense. We examined how pollen diet affects colony development, pathogen presence, and gut microbiota in two native South American bumblebee species, Bombus pauloensis and B. bellicosus. In B. pauloensis, monofloral pollen from Eucalyptus grandis increased worker body mass and showed a slight reduction in developmental time compared to polyfl

Association Between Loneliness, Stress, and Access to Healthcare in Older Adults: The Mediating Role of Social Determinants of Health.

Loneliness and stress are increasingly prevalent among aged 65 years and older and have been linked to poor health outcomes and limited access to care. These psychological factors often intersect with social determinants of health (SDH), yet little is known about how SDH mediate their effects on healthcare utilization. This study used 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data to examine the relationships between loneliness, stress, and healthcare access among U.S. adults aged 65 and older (N = 62,878). Key outcomes included having a personal healthcare provider and attending

Major changes in gene expression between strains of diapausing and non-diapause spruce budworm.

To survive harsh winter conditions, many insects enter a state of dormancy called diapause which allows them to withstand extreme temperatures and lack of food. When diapause is induced, insects enter a state of arrested development with a low metabolic rate. Because diapause and environmental conditions are closely linked, variation within and between species in diapause induction, depth, and duration is extremely common. Studies investigating the genetic underpinnings of diapause tend to focus on either different populations and/or environmental variation. We use the eastern spruce budworm (

Total Parental Nutrition as a Proportionate Means of Conserving Life.

The seventh edition of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services states, "In principle, there is an obligation to provide patients with food and water, including medically assisted nutrition and hydration for those who cannot take food orally." Most of the discussions around medically assisted nutrition and hydration have focused on enteral nutrition. The present article aims to argue that the obligation to provide nutrition and hydration, in principle, extends to providing parenteral nutrition for patients who cannot take in food through their intestines so long a

Characteristics of patients hospitalized for diabetic foot in a national hospital in Peru, 2024.

INTRODUCTION: Expansive processes around the third ventricle have always been a major neurosurgical challenge. Despite all the technological and scientific progress recorded over the last few years, third ventricle tumors are still a very difficult pathology to approach due to their formidable complexity.Treating such a tumor demands a good knowledge of local anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology and a good capacity to integrate all the data gathered from the patient prior to and during surgery. Last but not least, the correct means to approach such a tumor involves using modern neuronavigation

The portrayal of panic-buying and stockpiling in English newspapers during Covid, a mixed-method content analysis.

Panic-buying and stockpiling during Covid disrupted the supply chain, causing food shortages and impacting the vulnerable. The government faced criticism for its lack of food system resilience, poor communications planning, and reliance on retailers. The British media frequently reported on panic-buying during early lockdown stages in 2020 and throughout Covid. The media play an important role in communicating information to the British public during times of crisis and influence public opinion. This mixed-method study examined English media portrayal of panic-buying, analysing text and visual

Comparative study of gut microbiota reveals the adaptive strategies of gibbons living in suboptimal habitats.

Wild animals face numerous challenges in less ideal habitats, including the lack of food as well as changes in diet. Understanding how the gut microbiomes of wild animals adapt to changes in food resources within suboptimal habitats is critical for their survival. Therefore, we conducted a longitudinal sampling of three gibbon species living in high-quality (Nomascus hainanus) and suboptimal (Nomascus concolor and Hoolock tianxing) habitats to address the dynamics of gut microbiome assembly over one year. The three gibbon species exhibited significantly different gut microbial diversity and co
