Critical theory and cultural competency in medical QI projects: lessons from Pacific Islander communities.

This reflection explores the transformative power of critical theory through a quality improvement (QI) project creating culturally relevant dietary resources for Pacific Islander communities in Washington State, USA. Food injustice and lack of food sovereignty are examined as manifestations of modern-day colonialism perpetuated by capitalist-driven social structures. The methodology employed critical reflection, defined as the process of examining assumptions and power relations that shape practice, central to critical theory. Iterative group discussions aimed to understand the impact of indi

Arkansas Medical Marijuana Certifications: Higher-Volume Physicians Associated With Less Evidence Of Care Coordination.

Patients' access to medical marijuana has dramatically increased despite the lack of Food and Drug Administration approval. In this study, we profiled individuals and the conditions for which they were certified for medical marijuana, and we examined the evidence of coordination with their physicians providing traditional care. Within two years of initiation, medical marijuana was approved for 3.4 percent of Arkansans ages eighteen and older by 12.5 percent of physicians who had an active license in the state. Posttraumatic stress disorder and four pain diagnoses were the most frequent qualify

Exploration of Barriers and Facilitators to Healthy Eating in UK Truck Drivers.

BACKGROUND: The working environment of truck drivers promotes unhealthy lifestyle behaviours including physical inactivity and poor dietary choices. This leads to high levels of chronic diseases and a reduced life expectancy compared to other occupational groups. However, little is known about how drivers in the UK perceive their working environment and how this affects their food choices. This study aimed to gain a better understanding of long-haul (8-10-hour shifts) truck drivers' needs regarding healthy food choices whilst on the road to better inform future health promotion programmes and

Breast Cancer Detection Using Infrared Thermography: A Survey of Texture Analysis and Machine Learning Approaches.

Breast cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide, highlighting the urgent need for early detection. While mammography is the gold standard, it faces cost and accessibility barriers in resource-limited areas. Infrared thermography is a promising cost-effective, non-invasive, painless, and radiation-free alternative that detects tumors by measuring their thermal signatures through thermal infrared radiation. However, challenges persist, including limited clinical validation, lack of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval as a primary screening tool, physi

Neglected tropical diseases in East Africa on the example of Madagascar.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of tropical infections that are prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries; they usually stem from poor sanitation and poverty. People affected by NTDs are at risk of various disabilities, disfigurement, and social stigma. Most NTDs are chronic and debilitating illnesses whose treatment generates huge costs and puts a strain on individual and national budgets, especially in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The present article is a review of neglected tropical diseases which are found in East Africa; the study is based

HP1-Mediated Silencing of the Doublesex1 Gene for Female Determination in the Crustacean Daphnia magna.

The crustacean Daphnia magna produces genetically identical females and males by parthenogenesis. Males are produced in response to environmental cues including crowding and lack of food. For male development, the DM-domain containing transcription factor Doublesex1 (DSX1) is expressed spatiotemporally in male-specific traits and orchestrates male trait formation in both somatic and gonadal tissues. However, it remains unknown how the dsx1 gene is silenced in females to avoid male trait development. Heterochromatin Protein 1 (HP1) plays a crucial role in epigenetic gene silencing during develo

Maintenance of Physiological and Molecular Processes Through Food Restriction During Offspring Provisioning in the Adult Zebra Finch.

Food restriction is a common environmental stressor, and it can have beneficial effects such as increased longevity when applied to non-reproducing adults. At the molecular level, food restriction can have beneficial effects through increased DNA repair, reduced DNA damage and longer telomeres, but a lack of food may also hinder the ability to utilize carotenoids, or antioxidants obtained from diet. When food restriction overlaps with a period of high energetic demand, such as during offspring provisioning, a combination of the two may instigate reproductive trade-offs. In this study, adult ze

Food insecurity and sleep deficiency among older Filipinos: the mediating roles of depressive symptoms and frailty phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: Although research has shown that food insecurity may lead to sleep problems due to poor mental health, it remains unclear whether physical health mediates this relationship. We investigated whether depressive symptoms and frailty phenotypes mediated the association of food insecurity with sleep deficiency among community-dwelling older adults in the Philippines. METHODS: We analysed data from the baseline survey of a longitudinal study of ageing and health in the Philippines involving a nationally representative sample of older adults aged ≥60 years (n = 3599).
