Improving drought mitigation strategies and disaster risk reduction through MODIS and TRMM-based data in relation to climate change over Pakistan.

Drought is an extreme climatic event that mostly occurs as a result of low rainfall, which leads to lack of water in various agro-ecological conditions of Pakistan. The condition could be further exacerbated by the prevailing dry weather. Therefore, accurate, timely, and efficient drought monitoring is crucial to ensure that its adverse effects are mitigated. In this study, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and TRMM-based data were used together with remote sensing techniques to improve drought mitigation and disaster risk reduction strategies. In order to monitor drought m

Water-related conflict and cooperation events worldwide: A new dataset on historical and change trends with potential drivers.

Despite strong interest and conflict research spanning multiple disciplines, connections between water flows and conflicts remain unclear, due to incomplete datasets on water-related conflict-cooperation events and poor understanding of socioeconomic and biophysical causes of such conflicts. The dataset on water-related conflict-cooperation events compiled in this study extends to 2019, updating previous datasets that covered only up to 2008, yielding important new insights on cooperation-conflict trends. Global and regional trends were analyzed using the new events dataset, together with chan

Distribution of Emamectin Benzoate Granules in Maize Plants by Broadcasting into Maize Leaf Whorls.

Good control effects on fall armyworm (FAW) can be obtained by broadcasting emamectin benzoate (EB) granules into maize leaf whorls. However, the distribution of EB in maize plants is not clear. In this study, EB granules were prepared by the rotating granulation method, and the granules were characterized using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer. The behavior of EB granules in water was observed using a microscope, and in vitro release of EB from granules was also studied. A method for the determination of EB in maize plants, old leaves, grains, and cobs was established by using ultra-

Impact of the 2021 north american winter storms on children with epilepsy.

PURPOSE: In February 2021 a series of winter storms caused power outages for nearly 10 million people in the United States, Northern Mexico and Canada. In Texas, the storms caused the worst energy infrastructure failure in state history, leading to shortages of water, food and heat for nearly a week. Impacts on health and well-being from natural disasters are greater in vulnerable populations such as individuals with chronic illnesses, for example due to supply chain disruptions. We aimed to determine the impact of the winter storm on our patient population of children with epilepsy (CWE). ME

Toward waterborne protozoa detection using sensing technologies.

Drought and limited sufficient water resources will be the main challenges for humankind during the coming years. The lack of water resources for washing, bathing, and drinking increases the use of contaminated water and the risk of waterborne diseases. A considerable number of waterborne outbreaks are due to protozoan parasites that may remain active/alive in harsh environmental conditions. Therefore, a regular monitoring program of water resources using sensitive techniques is needed to decrease the risk of waterborne outbreaks. Wellorganized point-of-care (POC) systems with enough sensitivi

Arsenic in Lake Geneva (Switzerland, France): long term monitoring, and redox and methylation speciation in an As unpolluted, oligo-mesotrophic lake.

Arsenic speciation was followed monthly along the spring productivity period (January-June 2021) in the Petit Lac (76 m deep) and in April and June 2021 in the Grand Lac (309.7 m deep) of Lake Geneva (Switzerland/France). Lake Geneva is presently an oligo-mesotrophic lake, and As-unpolluted. The water column never becomes anoxic but the oxygen saturation at the bottom of the Grand Lac is now below 30% owing to lack of water column mixing since 2012. Thus, this lake offers excellent conditions to study As behaviour in an unpolluted, oxic freshwater body. The following 'dissolved' As species: iA

Evidence for a trade-off between growth rate and xylem cavitation resistance in Callitris rhomboidea.

The ideal plant water transport system is one that features high efficiency and resistance to drought-induced damage (xylem cavitation), however, species rarely possess both. This may be explained by trade-offs between traits, yet thus far, no proposed trade-off has offered a universal explanation for the lack of water transport systems that are both highly drought-resistant and highly efficient. Here, we find evidence for a new trade-off, between growth rate and resistance to xylem cavitation, in the canopies of a drought-resistant tree species (Callitris rhomboidea). Wide variation in cavita

Identification of potato Lipid transfer protein gene family and expression verification of drought genes StLTP1 and StLTP7.

Lipid transfer proteins (LTPs) are widely distributed in plants and play an important role in the response to stress. Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is sensitive to a lack of water, and drought stress is one of the limiting factors for its yield. Therefore, mining candidate functional genes for drought stress and creating new types of potato germplasm for drought resistance is an effective way to solve this problem. There are few reports on the LTP family in potato. In this study, 39 members of the potato LTP family were identified. They were located on seven chromosomes, and the amino acid seq

A Tiered Ecological Risk Assessment of Caffeine by Using Species Sensitivity Distribution Method in the Nansi Lake Basin.

Caffeine has been reported toxic to aquatic organisms, and it frequently occurs at relatively high concentrations in most of surface waters. However, it is difficult to control caffeine pollution because of the lack of Water Quality Criteria (WQC). In this study, species sensitivity distribution method and Log-normal model were applied to derive caffeine WQC as 83.7 ng/L. Meanwhile, concentrations of caffeine in the Nansi Lake basin were detected in 29 sampling sites, with the mean of 99.3 ng/L. The levels of caffeine in tributaries were higher than those in the lakes. In addition, a tied ecol

Integration of hydrogeological data, GIS and AHP techniques applied to delineate groundwater potential zones in sandstone, limestone and shales rocks of the Damoh district, (MP) central India.

The Damoh district, which is located in the central India and characterized by limestone, shales, and sandstone compact rock. The district has been facing groundwater development challenges and problems for several decades. To facilitate groundwater management, it is crucial to monitoring and planning based on geology, slope, relief, land use, geomorphology, and the types of the basaltic aquifer in the drought-groundwater deficit area. Moreover, the majority of farmers in the area are heavily dependent on groundwater for their crops. Therefore, delineation of groundwater potential zones (GPZ)

Contrasting leaf intercellular space development in sorghum and maize modulates different tolerance capacity to water limitation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between intercellular spaces and leaf gas exchange and the effect of total intercellular space on the growth of maize and sorghum under water restriction. The experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement (two plant types and three water conditions: field capacity (FC = 100%), 75%FC, and 50%FC) with 10 replicates. The lack of water was a limiting factor for maize because it showed reductions in leaf area, leaf thickness, biomass, and gas exchange parameters, while sorghum remained unchanged, maintaining

Food Hygiene Practices and Associated Factors Among Street Food Vendors in Urban Areas of Gedeo Zone, Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Street food is expanding all around Ethiopia. Street vendors have become commonplace near schools, hospitals and bus stations. Because street vended food is sold in unsanitary surroundings near streets, it can be contaminated with variety of pathogens, exposing consumers to foodborne illnesses. There haven't been enough studies on Ethiopian street food, and little is known about how hygienic these foods are. The local authorities don't even have a regulatory system to ensure food safety for street food vendors. Thus, this study aimed to assess food hygiene practices among street fo

When Phased without Water: Biophysics of Cellular Desiccation, from Biomolecules to Condensates.

The molecular machinery that enables life has evolved in water, yet many of the organisms around us are able to survive even extreme desiccation. Especially remarkable are single-cell and sedentary organisms that rely on specialized biomolecular machinery to survive in environments that are routinely subjected to a near-complete lack of water. In this review, we zoom in on the molecular level of what is happening in the cellular environment under water stress. We cover the various mechanisms by which biochemical components of the cell can dysfunction in dehydrated cells and detail the differen

Effect of deficit irrigation on physiological, biochemical, and yield characteristics in three baby corn cultivars (Zea mays L.).

The main problem in the production of crops in arid and semi-arid regions of the world is the lack of water and its effect on the plant in the form of drought stress. Cultivation of key crops such as corn, which also requires a lot of water, is not possible in these areas except by applying water consumption management methods. Among the most important of these methods is deficit irrigation. The effect of deficit irrigation on relative water content (RWC), malondialdehyde (MDA), compatible osmolytes (proline and soluble sugars), antioxidant enzymes, and yield was studied in three baby corn cul

Pyruvic acid as attenuator of water deficit in cotton plants varying the phenological stage.

The lack of water during crop growth causes damage to any production system, especially when it occurs during the initial establishment or beginning of the reproductive stage. Although cotton can be properly managed in regions with water limitation, its yield is affected at different levels according to the genetics of the cultivar adopted. Exogenous application of some organic components has shown a stress-mitigating effect and can be a valuable procedure to enhance the yield of water stress-sensitive cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate the benefits of exogenous application

Modeling Zeta Potential for Nanoparticles in Solution: Water Flexibility Matters.

Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the electrokinetic properties of five mainstream TIPxP water models (namely, TIP3P-FB, TIP3Pm, TIP4P-FB, TIP4P-Ew, and TIP4P/2005) in NaCl aqueous solutions in the presence of a negatively charged TiO2 surface. The impact of solvent flexibility and system geometry on the electro-osmotic (EO) mobility and flow direction was systematically assessed and compared. We found that lack of water flexibility decelerates the forward EO flow of aqueous solutions at moderate (0.15 M) or high (0.30 M) NaCl concentrations, in some special

Pandemic within a pandemic! Policy Implications of community-based Interventions to mitigate violence against women during COVID-19 in Urban Slums of Lucknow, India.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought an unprecedented adverse impact on women's health. Evidence from the literature suggests that violence against women has increased multifold. Gender-based violence in urban slums has worsened due to a lack of water and sanitation services, overcrowding, deteriorating conditions and a lack of institutional frameworks to address gender inequities. METHODS: The SAMBHAV (Synchronized Action for Marginalized to Improve Behaviors and Vulnerabilities) initiative was launched between June 2020 to December 2020 by collaborating with the Uttar Pradesh state

Designing a green-emitting viscosity-sensitive 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) probe for plasma membrane viscosity imaging.

Viscosity is a key characteristic of lipid membranes - it governs the passive diffusion of solutes and affects the lipid raft formation and membrane fluidity. Precise determination of viscosity values in biological systems is of great interest and viscosity-sensitive fluorescent probes offer a convenient solution for this task. In this work we present a novel membrane-targeting and water-soluble viscosity probe BODIPY-PM, which is based on one of the most frequently used probes BODIPY-C10. Despite its regular use, BODIPY-C10 suffers from poor integration into liquid-ordered lipid phases and la

Saturated long chain fatty acids as possible natural alternative antibacterial agents: Opportunities and challenges.

The spread of new strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms has led to the urgent need to discover and develop new antimicrobial systems. The antibacterial effects of fatty acids have been well-known and recognized since the first experiments of Robert Koch in 1881, and they are now used in diverse fields. Fatty acids can prevent the growth and directly kill bacteria by insertion into their membrane. For that, a sufficient amount of fatty acid molecules has to be solubilized in water to transfer from the aqueous phase to the cell membrane. Due to conflicting results in the lite
