Can Saccharomyces boulardii protect against radioactive iodine induced gastrointestinal damage? Study in a rat model.

OBJECTIVE: Radioactive iodine (RAI) is widely used for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid diseases. Common side effects of RAI include sialadenitis, xerostomia and gastrointestinal symptoms. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of Saccharomyces boulardii (S.boulardii) on the gastrointestinal changes induced by RAI. METHODS: Twenty four Wistar albino rats were grouped into three; the first group received RAI, the second group received RAI together with S.boulardii (RAI-S) and the third group served as controls. Tissue oxidative stress parameters and zonulin levels-as a marker o

Resveratrol inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and enhances the resistance of chickens to Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic pathogen which can cause fowl cholera in poultry industry and result in serious economic losses around the world. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenolic compound with a variety of pharmacological effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of resveratrol on the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and the resistance of chickens to Pasteurella multocida. It was found that resveratrol didn't affect the proliferation of chicken HD11 macrophages and the growth of Pasteurella multocida with a final concentration of 32 μg/mL, the minimum inhibitory concen

Recombinant Bacillus subtilis spores expressing cholera toxin B and ovalbumin prevent ovalbumin-specific food allergy in mice by upregulating regulatory T cells and modulating gut microbiome flora.

BACKGROUND: Although oral immunotherapy has shown clinical efficacy in treating food allergies, its broader implementation is constrained by the occurrence of adverse effects. Consequently, inducing allergen-specific immune tolerance during early life can be a preventive strategy to reduce the development of food allergy. OBJECTIVE: Here, we developed a novel fusion protein cholera toxin B (CTB)-ovalbumin (OVA) expressed on Bacillus subtilis (B.s-CotC-CTB-OVA) spore surface and investigated whether B.s-CotC-CTB-OVA spores prevent OVA-induced food allergy in a mouse model and explored the pote

Isolation, characterization, and antibacterial activity of a novel Pasteurella multocida bacteriophage.

Pasteurella multocida is the main pathogen causing fowl cholera and poses a serious threat to the poultry industry. Current clinical control relies on antibiotics, but the prevalence of drug-resistant strains makes it urgent to develop new antibacterial strategies. In this study, a P. multocida-specific bacteriophage vB_PmuS_ZP41 was isolated and identified as a member of the family Siphoviridae by transmission electron microscopy. This phage showed lytic activity against 13 out of 19 clinical isolates of P. multocida (68.4%) and remained stable at 4-50°C and pH 3-9. The optimal multiplicity o

PBRM1 knockdown is associated with NRF2‑dependent ALDOA upregulation and metabolic reprogramming in HCCC‑9810 intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma cells.

IMPORTANCE: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was the third leading cause of mortality in the United States for three years in a row. The genetic contributions to disease severity remain unclear and many previously identified single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have not been replicated nor linked with functional significance. OBJECTIVE: To identify SNPs associated with mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients supplemented by expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) evidence to infer plausible functional mechanisms related to COVID-19 severity. DESIGN: A quality-controlled gen

Solid pancreatic lesions in young patients (<40 years): Should we be worried about? Lessons from 4 years of EUS guided FNB in a tertiary center.

BACKGROUND: EUS-guided FNB is crucial in the management of solid pancreatic lesions (SPLs). Very little is known about SPLs and the risk of pancreatic cancer (PDAC) in young patients. METHODS: All consecutive patients who have undergone EUS-guided FNB for non-metastatic SPLs between July 1st 2021 and June 30th 2025 at the Gastroenterology Unit of the University of Verona were evaluated retrospectively. Demographical, clinical, radiological and endoscopic data were extrapolated from a prospectively maintained database. RESULTS: Among the 1250 included patients, 65 (5.2%) were younger than 40

Case Report: Discordant diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and splenic peripheral T-cell lymphoma revealed by persistent splenomegaly and cytopenia.

Discordant lymphomas involving mature B-cell and T-cell neoplasms are uncommon and may be missed when atypical clinical manifestations are attributed to a known aggressive lymphoma. We report a 71-year-old man who presented with fever, generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, splenic infarction, anemia, and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow, flow cytometry, and tissue immunohistochemistry supported stage IVB diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), non-germinal-center B-cell-like subtype, with bone marrow involvement. After dose-reduced R-CHOPE chemotherapy, partial remission was achieved, but thr

Preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT as a surgical triage tool for synchronous neoplasm detection in acute left-sided obstructive colorectal cancer: a two-institution retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: In acute left-sided obstructive colorectal cancer (OCC), the proximal colon cannot be evaluated endoscopically before surgery, and synchronous colorectal cancers (sCRC) and clinically significant neoplasms (CSN) may remain undetected. We evaluated the diagnostic performance of preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT for synchronous neoplasm detection in this setting. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 149 consecutive patients with acute left-sided obstructive colorectal adenocarcinoma (splenic flexure through rectum) treated by primary curative resection at two te

Low-grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm: A Rare Case Presentation.

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms (LAMNs) are rare appendiceal tumors characterized by mucin production and low-grade cytologic atypia. Although benign in nature, they have malignant potential if the mucinous epithelium breaches the appendiceal wall, leading to pseudomyxoma peritonei. We report the case of a 34-year-old male who presented with abdominal pain and was diagnosed with LAMN on histopathological examination after appendectomy. The patient recovered uneventfully and remains disease-free at follow-up. This case underscores the importance of timely diagnosis and complete surgica

Feasibility and Safety of Laparoscopic Partial Splenectomy: A Case Series.

PURPOSE: Total splenectomy is associated with infectious and thrombotic complications; thus, partial splenectomy has emerged as a spleen-preserving alternative. However, despite reports of advantageous perioperative outcomes with total splenectomy, the feasibility and safety of laparoscopic partial splenectomy (LPS) in adults remain insufficiently established. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed six consecutive adult patients undergoing LPS for splenic neoplasms and a cyst. Preoperative 3D-CT was used to evaluate hilar vascular anatomy and plan resection. RESULTS: No cases required conversi

Is Pyloroplasty Necessary During Esophagectomy? Review of Literature and Technical Considerations.

Esophagectomy remains the standard therapy for localized esophageal cancer, but postoperative function depends heavily on effective gastric conduit emptying. The aperistaltic conduit located in the negative pressure thoracic cavity is at risk of delayed gastric emptying leading to aspiration and pulmonary complications. This article summarizes historical and contemporary evidence evaluating pyloroplasty and alternative pyloric drainage strategies during esophagectomy. While earlier trials produced mixed results, recent level I evidence supports pyloroplasty as a safe adjunct that reduces gastr

Dedifferentiated Liposarcoma Presenting as Primary Diffuse Peritoneal Sarcomatosis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) typically presents as a solitary retroperitoneal mass; diffuse granular and nodular peritoneal sarcomatosis as the inaugural manifestation is exceptional. We report such a case to highlight a critical diagnostic consideration: distinguishing primary sarcomatous peritoneal dissemination from the more common epithelial peritoneal carcinomatosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old Chinese man with no prior abdominal surgery presented with incidentally discovered multifocal intra-abdominal masses. CT demonstrated multiple peritoneal and retroperitone

Parenchyma-sparing pancreatectomy for solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas: A propensity-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: The oncological equivalence of parenchyma-sparing pancreatectomy versus conventional resection for solid pseudopapillary neoplasm of the pancreas remains debated. This study compares perioperative and long-term outcomes between these approaches. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on patients undergoing solid pseudopapillary neoplasm resection at a high-volume center between June 2002 and August 2024. Propensity score matching (1:1) balanced baseline characteristics between groups. Outcomes included morbidity, recurrence-free survival, and metabolic sequelae

A simple parameter to guide plan optimization for robotic pancreas SBRT.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Pancreatic SBRT planning is challenging due to the proximity of highly sensitive organs at risk. Since automated planning is currently not available for the CyberKnife (CK) system, the optimization of high-quality treatment plans relies heavily on expert planners; however, even in this setting, the generation of suboptimal plans remains possible. The aim of this work was to develop a tool to guide plan optimization based on simple geometric parameters and institutional planning experience. MATERIALS AND METHODS: As a first step, the predictive value of the Expansion-In

Deep learning reconstruction in MRCP: Impact on IPMN characterization and common bile duct stone detection.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is the gold standard for evaluating ductal pathologies, particularly Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms (IPMN) and common bile duct (CBD) stones. However, image quality can be limited by noise, artifacts, and acquisition constraints. Deep learning (DL) reconstruction algorithms may improve image quality and diagnostic confidence. This study aims to compare DL and non-DL reconstructions in MRCP regarding diagnostic confidence for IPMN evaluation and CBD stone detection. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included

Diagnosis and Management of Soft-Tissue Sarcomas: Current Insights.

Soft-tissue sarcomas (STSs) are a complex and remarkable heterogeneous group of uncommon malignancies originating from fat, muscle, and other connective tissues. They constitute approximately 1% of all cancers with 50 to 70 distinct histologic subtypes or tumor entities. This type of tumor, also known as "the loneliest cancer" because of its rarity, can manifest at any age, but they are most commonly diagnosed in individuals older than 40 years. They can rise from any anatomic location (somatic, visceral, or bone), but the extremity is the most common primary site. STS presents a notable clini

Clear Cell Carcinoma of the Left Colon: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Primary clear cell carcinoma of the colon is an exceptionally rare condition. It is still uncertain whether this carcinoma represents a separate biological category or simply a variant of typical colorectal cancer. From a diagnostic standpoint, the presence of clear cell morphology introduces significant challenges, as similar features can be observed in various other carcinomas, including renal, ovarian, and endometrial carcinoma. Typically, primary colorectal tumors demonstrate positivity for markers such as CK20 and CDX2, supporting intestinal origin. CASE REPORT We present a cas

Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism following cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC for PMP of appendiceal origin.

OBJECTIVES: Thromboembolic events (TEE), including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), are important causes of morbidity after major surgery. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) may carry particularly high risks. We evaluated TEE incidence following CRS-HIPEC for pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) of appendiceal origin. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data (2020-2024) was performed in a high-volume peritoneal malignancy centre. Routine duplex ultrasound on postoperative day 10 screened for DVT. CT pulmon
