Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of Esophagus with Lung Metastasis: Case Report.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a malignant tumor originating in the salivary glands. It most commonly affects the salivary and lacrimal glands, with less frequent occurrences in the esophagus. Esophageal ACC (EACC) typically manifests in the middle or lower parts of the esophagus, with exceedingly rare instances in the upper part. Lung metastasis in EACC is uncommon, and understanding its clinical features and treatment strategies remains challenging. In this study, we present a case of ACC originating in the upper esophagus with lung metastasis. The patient, a middle-aged female, was admit

Pediatric Esophageal Dysphagia.

Swallowing is an elaborate process that requires neuromuscular coordination. Pediatric esophageal dysphagia is broadly categorized into structural and nonstructural causes. The structural causes of pediatric esophageal dysphagia are related to processes that narrow the lumen of the esophagus. Esophageal strictures are the result of scar tissue formation within the lumen of the esophagus, leading to stenosis. Vascular rings and slings cause external compression of the esophagus. Diagnosis requires an esophagram and computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Treatment is guided by the pa

A Conservative and Multidisciplinary Approach to Boerhaave Syndrome: A Case Report.

Boerhaave's syndrome is a life-threatening spontaneous esophageal rupture, usually in its distal part. It generally develops after situations that suddenly increase the intraesophageal pressure, such as, during or after persistent vomiting. Despite it being a rare condition in clinical practice, it has a high mortality rate (18-39%). Treatment can be approached conservatively, endoscopically, or surgically. The more invasive the treatment, the worse the prognosis. This paper presents a healthy 62-year-old man who resorted to the emergency department complaining of lower back and left scapular

A case report of metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma during pregnancy.

Esophageal cancer is extremely rare in pregnant women, accounting for only 0.07%-0.1% of all malignant neoplasms in pregnancy. It is rapidly progressive in nature and requires timely intervention. Our literature search yielded six case reports of esophageal cancers in pregnancy thus far. We herein report the case of a 30-year-old female, presenting at 32 weeks of gestation with complaints of hoarseness, dysphagia, and weight loss. The biopsy taken from within the esophagus, using an endoscope during an upper endoscopy procedure confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of esophagus an

Anatomical, histological, and scanning electron microscopic features of the esophagus and crop in young and adult domestic pigeons (Columba livia Domestica).

BACKGROUND: Pigeons (Columba livia) are mainly raised as a source of animal protein, racing, leisure and as an experimental animal. The present study investigated the morphology of the esophagus in the young and adult domestic pigeon, Columba livia domestica. METHODS: Ten young and ten adult, normal, and healthy pigeons were collected from the local breeders. Samples from different parts of esophagus and crop were examined grossly, by stereomicroscopy, scanning and light microscopy. RESULTS: The esophagus consisted of a long cervical part, a crop, and a short thoracic part. The crop was repr

Cost analysis of anticancer chemotherapy and chemoirradiation regimens considering the drugs marketed through Jan Aushadhi (People's Medicine) stores and their branded counterparts: First cost comparison study.

INTRODUCTION: Chemotherapy in an integral part of cancer treatment, either administered alone or in combination with radiation. However, the cost of these drugs is often prohibitively high for most patients. To address this issue, the Government of India has established Jan Aushadhi (JAS) stores across the country, where affordable generic medicines are available. In the current study, we performed a cost minimization analysis comparing JAS drugs with branded chemotherapeutic drugs used in various cancer treatment regimens. OBJECTIVES: This study was to conduct a cost-minimization analysis by

The regional cancer spectrum in Uganda: a population-based cancer survey by sub-regions (2017-2020).

BACKGROUND: Accurate estimation of the burden of cancer in developing countries is a major public health concern for cancer prevention and control because of the limited coverage of population-based cancer registries (PBCRs). The cancer registration coverage status of Uganda was 11.90% and was not uniformly distributed in all regions of Uganda. This population-based survey was conducted to assess the burden of cancer in all the sub-regions of Uganda by site, sex and age group to accurately determine the cancer profile of Uganda by sub-region for a tailored intervention to mitigate cancer risk

Simultaneous Reconstruction of the Esophagus and Posterior Tracheal Wall Using a Combination of Free Jejunal and Mesenteric Flaps: A Case Report.

Free jejunal transfer is one of the most useful procedures for reconstructing circumferential defects following total pharyngolaryngoesophagectomy (TPLE). When an extended resection of the surrounding soft tissue is performed in addition to the TPLE, the defect may require another flap in addition to the jejunal flap to reconstruct the soft tissue defect. In such multiple defects, the choice of reconstruction method remains unanswered and unsolved. Herein, our objective was to clarify the utility of our newly developed technique of simultaneous reconstruction of two defects in the neck using a

Knowledge-based planning for fully automated radiation therapy treatment planning of 10 different cancer sites.

PURPOSE: Radiation treatment planning is highly complex and can have significant inter- and intra-planner inconsistency, as well as variability in planning time and plan quality. Knowledge-based planning (KBP) is a tool that can be used to efficiently produce high-quality, consistent, clinically acceptable plans, independent of planner skills and experience. In this study, we created and validated multiple clinically acceptable and fully automatable KBP models, with the goal of creating VMAT plans without user intervention. METHODS: Ten KBP models were configured using high quality clinical p

Residual Retrosternal Goiter and Thymolipoma After Cervical Thyroid Resection.

Retrosternal goiters (RGs) are thyroid enlargements that extend into the mediastinum, representing 1%-20% of all goiters. While typically benign, their anatomical location can lead to significant clinical symptoms due to the compression of surrounding structures such as the trachea, esophagus, and major vessels. Surgical resection is the preferred treatment, particularly in symptomatic cases or when malignancy is suspected. In rare cases, RGs may co-occur with other mediastinal tumors, such as thymolipomas, complicating both diagnosis and management. We present a 39-year-old female with a resi

Macro- and microscopic anatomy of the digestive tract in the red-eared slider (Emydidae: Trachemys scripta elegans).

The red-eared sliders (Emydidae: Trachemys scripta) is characterised by a high adaptability to a variety of environment and threatens the habitat of Japanese native species. The ability to digest a variety of diets may attribute to the high adaptive capacity of this species to various environments, however, the digestive morphology remains scarcely described in red-eared sliders. In this study, we investigated the macro- and microscopic anatomy of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine in red-eared sliders. All segments of the digestive tract had longitudinal mucosal fold

Not Every Dyspepsia Is Related to Helicobacter pylori-A Case of Esophageal Inlet Patch in a Female Teenager.

Helicobacter pylori infection is one of the main causes of dyspepsia, but it is not the only cause. Esophageal inlet patches are areas of heterotopic gastric mucosa within the esophagus and are commonly located in the cervical part of the esophagus. We report the case of a 16-year-old female, previously known to display symptoms of anxiety, who was admitted to our clinic for dyspeptic symptoms lasting for approximately 1 month in spite of the treatment with proton pump inhibitors. The clinical exam revealed only abdominal tenderness in the epigastric area, while routine laboratory tests showed

A rare cause of dysphagia and simultaneous hoarseness of voice in the octogenarian: a Killian-Jamieson diverticulum, management, and review of literature.

UNLABELLED: An 82-year-old male presented with progressive dysphagia and simultaneous hoarseness of voice for the past 6 months. He had mitral valve repair and a permanent pacemaker for a heart block 5 years ago. A computed tomographic scan of the neck demonstrated a cervical esophageal diverticulum. Oral Gastrogrifin contrast study confirmed esophageal diverticulum in Killian-Jamieson space. Open surgical diverticulectomy was performed safely. Patient's dysphagia resolved immediately, and he regained his normal voice after 6 weeks. INTRODUCTION: Killian-Jamieson's esophageal diverticulum is

Monoclonal antibodies for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma: A literature review.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a relatively common and heterogenous malignancy of different organs, such as the skin, esophagus, and lungs. Although most cases experience good survival with surgical methods, management of advanced types of the disease remains challenging. Several modalities, including different chemotherapy regimens and immunotherapies, have been investigated in this matter, among which Monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) are one of the most promising ones. Since the development of Mabs, they have been widely used to treat different diseases. Mabs have shown significant

The Relationship Between Vocal Fold Mobility Disorders and Ineffective Esophageal Motility.

OBJECTIVE: Deglutition, speech production, and airway protection are extraordinarily complex, interrelated functions that are coordinated, in large part, by the motor and sensory innervation of CN X. Previous studies assessing the relationship between neurogenic voice disorders and dysphagia have focused on the risk of aspiration due to glottic insufficiency and the association of vocal fold hypomobility (VFH) with systemic neurologic disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between VFH disorders and ineffective esophageal motility (IEM). METHODS: Adult voice pat

South of the UES: Improving the ability of speech-language pathologists to detect oesophageal abnormalities during videofluoroscopy swallowing studies.

PURPOSE: With two-thirds of adults presenting for a videofluoroscopy swallow study (VFSS) with oesophageal abnormalities, it seems prudent to include visualisation of the oesophagus, in the context of the entire swallow process, to provide further information to the diagnostic team. This study aims to evaluate the ability of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) to interpret oesophageal sweep on VFSS and the relative improvement in that ability with additional training. METHOD: One hundred SLPs attended training in oesophageal visualisation during VFSS, based on a previous study. Ten oesophagea

Molecular Characterization of Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Using Quantitative Proteomics.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a heterogeneous cancer associated with a poor prognosis in advanced stages. In India, it is the sixth most common cause of cancer-related mortality. In this study, we employed high-resolution mass spectrometry-based quantitative proteomics to characterize the differential protein expression pattern associated with ESCC. We identified several differentially expressed proteins including PDPN, TOP2A, POSTN and MMP2 that were overexpressed in ESCC. In addition, we identified downregulation of esophagus tissue-enriched proteins such as SLURP1, PADI1, CST
