Suicidal vehicle-assisted ligature strangulation resulting in complete decapitation: an autopsy report and a review of the literature.

The victim (59-year-old male) used a long hemp rope tied between his neck and a cherry tree while attempting to drive his car away, resulting in complete decapitation. At autopsy, the decapitation wound of the head and the torso corresponded perfectly; a clear-cut severance plane was found at the bottom of the skull. In contrast to suicidal decapitation by hanging and traumatic railway injury, autopsy findings for vehicle-assisted ligature strangulation are rarely reported. A review of the literature concerning suicidal vehicle-assisted ligature strangulation suggested a striking young or adul

Epidemic of suicide by hanging in Lithuania: does socio-demographic status matter?

OBJECTIVE: To analyse suicide by hanging, compared with other methods, by demographic and selected social factors in Lithuania, and to evaluate changes during 1993-1997, and 1998-2002. METHODS: Data on committed suicides were compiled from the Lithuanian Department of Statistics. Suicides were identified by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD): codes in ICD-9 E950-E959 and codes in ICD-10 X60-X84. These were categorized into seven groups by method of suicide. Particular attention was paid to suicide and self-inflicted injury by hanging, strangulation and suffocation (ICD-9: E953

Trends in suicide in a Lithuanian urban population over the period 1984-2003.

BACKGROUND: Throughout the last decade of the twentieth century, Lithuania had the highest suicide rates in Europe among both men and women aged 25-64 years. The rates increased from 1986 until 1995, but later there was a slight decrease. This paper describes the trends in suicide deaths in urban population in Lithuania by gender, dates and suicide method over the period 1984-2003. METHODS: Data from the regional mortality register were used to analyze suicide deaths among all men and women aged 25-64 years in Kaunas city, Lithuania over the period 1984-2003. Age-standardized death rates per

Suicidal and homicidal deaths: a comparative and circumstantial approach.

The incidence of suicide and homicide is on the increase worldwide, including India. One million people die annually due to suicides and homicides alone. A comparison of the results between suicides and homicides was performed. From a total of 5773 medicolegal deaths reported at an Apex medical centre of Nagpur University over a period of three years 1998-2000, only 241 cases (4.2%) were homicidal deaths in comparison to 1127 cases (19.5%) of suicidal deaths with suicide rate of 23.1/100,000 per year and homicide rate of 4.9/100,000 per year. Poisoning, burning, hanging and drowning forms the

Asphyxial deaths: a retrospective study and review of the literature.

An increasing death rate as a result of violence constitutes a large group in medicolegal autopsies. Specially, deaths due to asphyxia are one of the most important causes in violence deaths. During the 21-year period from January 1984 to October 2004, there were 134 asphyxial deaths autopsied by the Department of Forensic Medicine, Trakya University, Edirne, Turkey. Asphyxial deaths comprise 15.7% of all forensic autopsies; 20.8% of the cases are aged between 30 and 39 years, and the average age was 41.9 years. Males constitute 79.8% of all the cases. The most frequent method of asphyxiation

Postmortem non-invasive virtual autopsy: death by hanging in a car.

A body was found behind a car with a noose tied around its neck, the other end of the rope tied to a tree. Apparently the man committed suicide by driving away with the noose tied around his neck and was dragged out of the car through the open hatchback. postmortem multislice-computed tomography (MSCT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicated that the cause of death was cerebral hypoxia due to classic strangulation by hanging, and not due to a brainstem lesion because of a hang-man fracture as would be expected in such a dynamic situation. Furthermore, the MRI displayed intramuscular hae

The impact of trends in psychotropic prescribing on the method of suicide in the elderly.

Suicide rates in the elderly have declined in many countries in recent years. This decline has been reported to be associated with increased prescribing of antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), antipsychotics and antimanic drugs and reduced prescribing of barbiturates, hypnotics and sedatives. This study examined the relationship between prescribing patterns of individual psychotropic drugs and suicide rates by specific methods of elderly suicides. There was a negative correlation between the prescription of tricyclic antidepressants, selective serotoni

[Modern variant of hanging: use of a time-programmed winch].

Hanging is one of the most frequent types of suicide. Descriptions of unusual ligatures can be read about again and again. The paper reports the suicide of a 41-year-old electrician, who, using an electric winch, hung himself in nearly free suspension. The winch that was secured to the timberwork of the attic had been programmed by an electric time clock, the toggle switch of the remote control was fixed in the on-position using adhesive tape. The man had handcuffed his hands behind his back against any attempts to save himself. The noose was partly cushioned with a bike tube with the obvious

Transfer of biological traces in cases of hanging and ligature strangulation.

In hanging and ligature strangulation, the noose mostly causes a mark or groove which is formed partly by compression of the skin and partly by abrasion with loss of the upper epidermal layers. The horny scales abraded from the neck may be transferred to the strangulation device or to the interposed textiles where they are sometimes visible at stereomicroscopic examination or even to the naked eye as silver-grey particles. The morphologic features of the epidermal transfer due to hanging and ligature strangulation is demonstrated by 14 case examples. The biological traces may be sufficient for

Self strangulation by hanging from cloth towel dispensers in Canadian schools.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a local "epidemic" of incidents of strangulation by hanging from continuous cloth towels in dispensers. METHOD: The coroner's office in all provinces and territories were contacted. Five cases of hanging from continuous cloth towels in Canadian schools were identified and reviewed. RESULTS: There were four deaths, and one near-death, all males age 7 to 12. Two cases were attributed to a "choking game" that provides a sensation (impending loss of consciousness) described as "cool". In three cases, the child was alone at the time. All deaths were due to strangulation

Recent trends in elderly suicide rates in England and Wales.

The proportion of elderly in the population is increasing due to increased life expectancy and falling birth rate, and suicide rates increase with age. This study examined the following in England and Wales: (i) recent trends in the elderly suicide rate; (ii) recent trends in method-specific elderly suicide rate; (iii) the relationship between elderly population size and elderly suicide rate in recent years; and (iv) the sex difference in overall and method-specific elderly suicide rate. Data on the various suicide variables were ascertained from the annually published mortality data for years

[Suicidal hanging or simulated suicide? Once again a case of Kobue: a spectacular case in the history of Japanese legal medicine].

The cause of death of a 45-year-old woman named Kobue Hiramatsu became an issue in a notable criminal trial called the Kobue-case. The woman and three young girls were found dead in Kobue's house at the end of June 1926. The bodies were decomposed. The three girls had been strangled, while Kobue was found suspended by a waist band tied to a lintel. An open noose had been arranged by winding the band twice around the lintel and tying the both ends. The ligature lay immediately under the chin. Her feet touched the tatami mat and between feet, there were a charcoal brazier and a cutting board. Th

[Simulated suicide by hanging after homicidal strangulation].

Homicides by hanging and the simulation of suicide by hanging a victim previously killed or made unable to resist by other means are regarded as extremely rare events, although especially in German forensic literature cases of this kind were repeatedly reported. The paper adds another example to the number of observations published so far: A 23-year-old student strangled his 58-year-old father with an electric cable until he ceased to show any signs of life. Then he hanged the victim at the handrail of the staircase with a running noose. From the forensic point of view the following clues poin

Delayed death after attempted suicide by hanging.

In cases of hanging death usually occurs immediately after strangulation and is caused by ischemic cerebral damage due to neck compression in some cases in combination with respiratory obstruction. We report on a case of delayed death 4 days after an attempted suicide by hanging where the individual was conscious and showed no neurological abnormalities. The cause of death was a cerebral infarction following a traumatic thrombosis of the subtotally ruptured carotid arteries.

[Using muscle histology for assessment of vitality in hanging].

The external and internal signs of vitality of hanging were often absent in a retrospective study of 55 cases of hanging. The histological examination of the cervical muscles however revealed in the majority of the cases "vital" changes in the muscle fibres, e.g. segmental or discoid fragmentation of the muscle fibres with loss of the sarcoplasmatic cross-striation. The histological examination is therefore a valid instrument for proofing the vitality of hanging and other forms of strangulation.

[Unusual findings in death by hanging--reconstruction of capacity for action].

A case of delayed death after suicidal hanging is presented. At first the examination of the scene did not provide any evidence of strangulation. The macroscopic and microscopic findings of the massive neck injury including cricotracheal disruption are described and discussed. In spite of this severe trauma, the capability to act was undoubtedly preserved. Death was due to hypoxia from bilateral pneumothorax caused by the massive neck injury.

Suicide in North and West Devon: a comparative study using Coroner's inquest records.

To determine the local characteristics of suicides of North and West Devon residents, and to compare them with (a) individuals resident outside the defined area but killing themselves within it, and (b) suicides in the remainder of England and Wales, a retrospective descriptive three-year review of data from the Coroner's confidential inquest records was carried out. The subjects were all persons killing themselves within the Coroner's catchment area for North and West Devon between 1 January 1988 and 31 December 1990. It was found that persons resident outside the area (n = 13) were significa

[The supplementary signs of strangulation asphyxia].

Analyzes the results of forensic medical examinations of the corpses after hanging. The findings were as follows: two strangulation grooves are seen on the corpse's neck after hanging, that are similar to the grooves seen after strangulation with a loop and subsequent hanging of a corpse; the presence of bruises on the neck, along with the strangulation grooves, is indicative of a strangulation made by the hands, whereas half-moon shaped bruises may be self-inflicted during hanging.

[Aspiration of gastric contents in hanging with typical position of the strangulation cord and free suspension].

Among 193 cases of hanging from the years 1978 to 1991 examined in the institute of Forensic Medicine of the Freie Universität Berlin 8 cases with an aspiration of stomach contents had been reported. Herefrom 3 cases were hanging in a "typical" position (suspension point at the back of the head, free suspension of the hanging body) and did not undergo resuscitation. By free suspension of the hanging body the observed massive aspiration of gastric contents only can be explained by an at least partly open connecting passage between the laryngeal entry and the entrance of the oesophagus.
