[Intentional drowning as a method of self-inflicted injury and suicide: a 21-year analysis of Galicia].

OBJECTIVE: Drowning and suicide are interconnected complex phenomena and represent significant Public Health issues. The aim of this paper was to identify and describe the characteristics and factors associated with intentional drownings in Galicia (Spain), analyzing a retrospective cohort of twenty-one years. METHODS: A descriptive, retrospective, and longitudinal study (2001-2021) was conducted analyzing a cohort of patients aged 0 to 100 years who were treated by Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS) units of the FPUS 061 and by hospitals within the Galician Health Service (SERGAS). Self-inflicted Thoraco-abdominal stabbing followed by bathtub drowning: Reconstruction of the terminal mechanism in a complex suicide.

Complex suicide involving sharp-force injury and drowning may closely mimic homicide and requires careful reconstruction of the terminal mechanism. We report an anonymized case of a 27-year-old man found prone in a bathtub containing water mixed with blood after emergency entry into his apartment. Blood traces were documented in several rooms. Autopsy identified 18 stab-incised wounds of the precordial and epigastric regions, hesitation-type superficial injuries, old linear forearm scars, and no defensive injuries. Seven wounds penetrated the thoracic cavity; however, the limited right ventric

Racial disparities in suicide-related mortality in the US: Examining trends before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic using the CDC WONDER database.

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in suicide-related mortality remain a critical public health concern in the U.S. Mental health and socioeconomic inequities, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, may have disrupted existing trends. This study examines suicide mortality from 2018 to 2023, focusing on racial group shifts before, during, and after the pandemic. METHODS: Mortality data were obtained from the CDC WONDER database. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMR) per 100,000 persons among different racial groups were calculated for three periods: pre-pandemic (2018-2019), pandemic peak (2020-2021), a

A consecutive case series study of the association between psychiatric diagnoses and suicide methods using coronial data in Queensland, Australia, from 1989 to 2021.

OBJECTIVE: People with different psychiatric diagnoses use certain suicide methods more frequently. These findings could have implications for reducing suicide. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess associations between three severe mental illnesses (SMIs) and suicide methods, while adjusting for other confounding factors that could influence choice of suicide methods. METHODS: We used information on all individuals dying by suicide in Queensland, Australia, from 1989 to 2021. Methods were compared to hanging, strangulation and suffocation for people with three different SMIs with ad

Decedents Found in Bathtubs.

We investigated deaths in bathtubs for criteria to assist in death certification. We reviewed 252 deaths in which the person was found dead in a bathtub/shower at home. We extracted cause, manner, age, clad or unclad, water in the bathtub, water running, and face submersion. Of the 252 deaths, heart disease was the leading cause of death (129), followed by intoxication (47), trauma (22), drowning (28), and other diseases (26). The manners of death were 155 natural, 64 accident, 30 suicide, and 3 homicides. All drowning fatalities involved the decedent having their face submerged. Intoxication

Associations between unintentional injuries and deliberate self-harm behaviors of children and adolescents: A school-based cross-sectional survey.

While statistics from hospitals showed that the proportion of self-harm or attempted suicide kept growing among children and adolescents aged 6-17 attending the emergency department, cases of self-harm or attempted suicide dissimulated as accidents received scant attention or were neglected. This study aimed to examine associations between unintentional injuries subtypes and deliberate self-harm behaviors from a school-based large-scale survey. A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Anhui, China, between November 2022 to January 2023. A total of 28,013 students (aged 11-17, 5th-

The water incident database (WAID) 2012 to 2019: a systematic evaluation of the documenting of UK drownings.

BACKGROUND: Death by drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in the United Kingdom (UK) and worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that effective documentation of drowning is required to describe drowning frequency and to underpin effective drowning prevention intervention, thus improving the quality of data describing drowning frequency represents a key initiative. The water incident database (WAID) has been used to document UK fatal and non-fatal water-based incidents since 2009. WAID has not undergone a systematic evaluation of its data or data collection procedures t

Epidemiology and autopsy findings of 500 drowning deaths.

INTRODUCTION: Drowning is a significant public health problem worldwide and the WHO reported that drowning is the world's third leading unintentional injury death. Nevertheless, there is still uncertainty regarding the estimate of local and global drowning deaths. In addition, the postmortem diagnosis of drowning is challenging and the physiological mechanisms of death by drowning are complex and not very well understood. PURPOSE: To analyze a large series of bodies retrieved from the water in Connecticut (U.S.) in order to compare epidemiologic and toxicological data with those of the litera

Submerged corpses of an elderly couple retrieved from a canal with alcohol detected in their blood: A rare case of murder-suicide by drowning?

The body of an elderly man and his disabled wife were found submerged in a canal in open country one afternoon. They had last been seen alive that morning. The man's car was parked close to the canal and the woman's wheelchair was located in a stable position a few meters from the canal bank, facing away from the water. There were abrasions and bruises on the woman's forearms and hands and lower left leg, and the man's body displayed a bruise on the left hand and an abrasion of the left thumb likely caused by a fingernail. Other observations included frothy fluid exuding from the nose and in t

Weighted drownings - An example of augmentation or enhancement of a suicide method.

While planned complex suicides utilize more than one method, on occasion a planned suicide merely involves augmentation of the lethality of the chosen single method. A study was undertaken of augmented suicidal drownings from Forensic Science SA, Adelaide, Australia over a 25-year period (1993-2017). 493 cases (M:F 2.6:1) were found in which death was attributed to drowning. The age range for males was 7mths-93yrs (mean 43.7yrs) and for females 11mths-87yrs (mean 48.2yrs). A subset of 116 suicidal drownings (M:F 1.2:1) had a male age range of 17-86yrs (mean 52.3yrs) and for females 19-68yrs (m

Elevated Cerebrospinal Fluid Sodium and Chloride Levels in a Saltwater Drowning Death.

To ascribe a cause of death from drowning in a body immersed in water can be difficult because of the absence of specific postmortem findings and unreliable ancillary tests. Postmortem vitreous biochemical analysis is documented to be a useful adjunct ancillary test to aid the diagnosis of saltwater drowning. A major confounding factor in using postmortem vitreous is the effect of electrolyte diffusion and water osmosis during immersion. A recent animal study suggested that cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biochemical analysis, which is unaffected by immersion, may be an alternative. However, to date

Huntington's disease: a forensic risk factor in women.

The antioxidants are essential molecules in human system but are not miracle molecules. They are neither performance enhancers nor can prevent or cure diseases when taken in excess. Their supplemental value is debateable. In fact, many high quality clinical trials on antioxidant supplement have shown no effect or adverse outcomes ranging from morbidity to all cause mortality. Several Chochrane Meta-analysis and Markov Model techniques, which are presently best available statistical models to derive conclusive answers for comparing large number of trials, support these claims. Nevertheless none

Factors associated with autopsy rates in a 6-year sample of Danish suicides in the Capital area of Copenhagen.

On average, two suicides occur in Denmark every day. In order to prevent suicides, it is important to understand their nature. The forensic autopsy plays an important role by providing detailed knowledge of the cause and manner of death. Unfortunately, the autopsy rate for suicides in Denmark is very low. The aim of this study was to elucidate the factors that may affect the decision to perform a forensic autopsy and thereby affect the autopsy rate of suicidal deaths in the Capital area of Copenhagen. Data from 6211 death certificates from the Capital area of Copenhagen, Denmark, over a study

Issues in Developing a Surveillance Case Definition for Nonfatal Suicide Attempt and Intentional Self-harm Using International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) Coded Data.

Suicide and intentional self-harm are among the leading causes of death in the United States. To study this public health issue, epidemiologists and researchers often analyze data coded using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Prior to October 1, 2015, health care organizations and providers used the clinical modification of the Ninth Revision of ICD (ICD-9-CM) to report medical information in electronic claims data. The transition in October 2015 to use of the clinical modification of the Tenth Revision of ICD (ICD-10-CM) resulted in the need to update methods and selection c

Autopsy rate in suicide is low among elderly in Denmark compared with Finland.

National differences in the legislation on cause and manner of death investigation are reflected in a high autopsy rate in suicides in Finland and a low corresponding rate in Denmark. The consequences for mortality statistics of these different investigation practices on deaths classified as suicides in Denmark and Finland, respectively, are not known in detail. The aim of this article was to analyse autopsy rates in deaths classified as suicides, and to identify any differences in investigation practices in deaths with a comparable cause of death, but classified as unnatural deaths other than

[Death in a rainwater tank--unusual death by hypothermia].

Death due to hypothermia is often accidental and associated with alcohol intoxication, diseases or previous trauma. A very rare phenomenon is suicidal hypothermia. A 74-year-old depressive woman was found dead in a rain barrel with her head above the water level in February at an outdoor temperature of 0 degrees C. Forensic autopsy did not reveal any findings typical of drowning. Likewise, there was no morphological evidence of hypothermia, but this cannot be expected in immersion hypothermia with a very short agony. Unusual situations at scene always require comprehensive police investigation

Decomposed and non-decomposed bodies retrieved from water: a comparative approach.

The cause and manner of death in submersion cases are a routine challenge for forensic pathologists as they present considerable diagnostic difficulties. The present study was undertaken with a view to determine the characteristic pattern in bodies retrieved from water. From a total of 6779 medicolegal deaths reported at an Apex Medical Centre, Yeotmal, a rural district of Maharashtra over a 10-year study period, only 110 cases (1.6%) were decomposed and 243 cases (3.6%) were non-decomposed bodies retrieved from water with a rate of 0.6 decomposed body as compared with 1.4 non-decomposed bodie
